i need a large screen so i have lots of space, the painter program is so crapmed wiht brush controls and shit. so yeah, just make sure you set your screen to an appropriate resolution it can handle the highest is my recommendation, since you don't have alot of space for the window your drawing in...

The number one tip I can give fro first time painter folks is go to Edit, Preferences, Brush Tracking. Set up your sensitivity. Painter default pressure is horrible.

My noobish 2p worth
Open a big canvas, and muck about with as many brush variants as possible, when you find one you really like, click and drag the brush variant icon to an empty bit of screen. Painter should create a "custom cool brush menu" gizmo, repeat this until you have a smallish toolbox of brushes / blenders / whatever you like. It'll take a good while to find the right ones for you but it saves tons of time later..
Painter has mad amounts of options, buttons, sliders etc and I found it baffling to start with, it might go easier if you clean up a lot of the interface so only menus you use regularly are open. I personally have colour swatches, the colour mixer gizmo and the layers on ( well, and toolbar obviously..)
This chap is rather good and he's done a page of Painter tips, I found them handy.
