you have a good imagination, the only crit I have is that the perspective on the legs of the female seems a bit off and the feet look funny too, really like your sketches, though, keep it up

Whats up man!!, This first study has a nice sence of bulk,
I can really feel the form, and belive me that is good asset,
The anatomy needs work on various parts tho, seeing your stuides
at dev-art I can see you are starting to tackle down your anatomy
wich is a good thing.

You can use image shack to host your studies
it allows remote linking:

critics

Right I can see you have a good eye for proprocions I think that
what you need to do is focus on starting doing studies of how
the inner mechanics of the body funcions, wich muscle push
what, and how bones interact with them.

As far as the warrior girl goes, the legs look a bit to bulky
you are using to much round shapes, Michael Mentler advised me
to use straigth lines as opossed to the curves, remeber that
every action in the body has an oposite reaction.

The curvature of the lower legs of the girl warrior should be
concave instead of convex (see the rithms of the legs of
Loomis studies and you will see what i mean) do simple skeleton
possees for you to start seening how the interlocking of forms work.
plus they are too long, I might me wrong but if you straighten up the
legs you will see that if the girl were standing up, the legs
would be way to long and the feet do look a bit wonky
perspective wise.

Overall you have some REALLY good raw intutions and
potencial; Dude! you are so much better than me at interlocking
of shapes, you got me all inspired to work harder!!
keep the studing UP! :D :yayca:

See ya later

P. S.
this one has some really nice flow of shapes GOOD work:

it seems like you have improved a lot over the last months.
these animal studies look superb!
are these from pictures? your imagination? life(rawr!)?
what did you use? pencils?.. which grade is that black
background then.. lookin good.. loookin goood

buut i think you gotta look more into that bottle of human
anatomy though. the guy on the top left (yeah, i know it's
a monster - but most monsters are still based on morphed
human anatomy) looks out of proportions..

hey!!! I havent been here in a while, the anatomy is really paying off,
you still seem to have a few problems with feets and hands,
keep doing those, the more the better, as I commented your
some time ago, I really like your sence of bulk, and your are developing
a nice amount of imagination doodles, wich is good,
your biggets weakness imo are your feet and some times your hands
just keep doing studies of them, and never give up,
Ill try to be around mate!!!! see ya! :^^:

you have a good imagination and its dying to get out there.. but it seems your are stuggling with anatomy and preportions.. but from what i can see not always.. in select works and angles. your color usages are pretty basic but it seems you know where you want a piece to go, i think you should stop being so careful and just bust out with the colors.. add blues yellows and reds where you wouldnt at times.. experiment. the way i work is i try to use traditionally used colors for skin tones..peaches, yellows, oranges, burn umber etc.. and then mix it up with its opposites in the color wheel blue tones.. but as highlights.. then i add some more bright colors to make the picture pop more. you kind of shy away from mixing it up and try to stay with base colors..(which is totally understandable) i worked the same way for like 2 years lol. also try to mix it up with different brush textures too it could help out.
anyways, your ref work and shading are looking good. your imagination work just needs a bit of tuning for preportions which comes from more lifedrawing practice or just more practice in general. good stuff.

His ribs might be a bit to defined, try darkeing the lower torso a bit more,
the legs are a bit too short, the neck looks to guessed as well,
the head needs to proyect a cast shadow over his body.

This one has some propocions problems, the torso is to long, and that
makes the legs look to short, but the ligthing looks reall tasty!

Hey

Cannible is coming along great - I suggest that you maybe get rid of the black lines around it - they are interfering with the nice highlights and texture you have created. Hand studies look good to - perhaps take a look at the bonestructure - hand's bonestructure is especially useful for creating them.

great work dude - keep posting.

Hi there, great SB! I like your shading and the poses a lot. You have quite a variety of characters here! I will just throw in my suggestions: the eyes in your imaginative drawings are often set too wide apart, they are usually another eye width apart from each other. On the military guy, and other color concepts, I would go for more muted colors, they seem a bit bright and saturated.
Your anatomy studies rock! Keep it on!

I agree with MattGamer critics, just keep this pase man!
the legs look much better, so does the hand holding the little humans

Lion's on the blurry side, could use more variety with the edges of shapes, the ear's almost blending in with the mane. Would be worthwhile to study up on color theory. Other than that nothing really wrong with it, character designs are looking pretty decent too.

I have critique tho, it seems to me that you are doing all your

Thanks for the comments! IMO you should try digi-painting from reference. First for proportions (if human), but more importantly value, then for color- in my opinion, pencil is much better for things like anatomy.

Take a picture you like, good composition, good subject... Then desaturate it, zoom out, and make flat values of what you see. This helps increase your ability to use value in terms of composition- it's very important- you might also do this with Masterpieces. Composition is a very, VERY important thing. Do the same with color- but do it with just b/w first so you get a better grasp on it.

Also, do material studies in Digi or pencil; Paint or draw some water, some glass, some shiny steel, some dull steel, some rusty steel, some cement- They all reflect differently, and displaying these differences makes your pieces much more competent.

Good luck man!

You have strong drawing skills dude! Your digital work will catch up to the level of your graphite drawings. Are you in a life drawing class? Some of your figures are stiff, but that can be remedied with a better gesture :). The Patacho indian is very nice btw. Your portraits are great as well. Keep practicing. Good luck on your art conquest of South America, LOL!

Hey man! Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook so often. I was checkin on like the 3rd/4th pages for gems and decided to stop here for ya.

One thing I think you seemto be having trouble with is form. Try drawing your hand in planes, really thinkTHINK THINKTHINK hard THINK HARD LOOK AND SEE YOUR HAND, fully, completey as a 3d object. Use your human intuition and memorize your hand... Then draw it as if it were a 3d model.. draw a wire frame of it. An excersize like this helps you to think in masses, which is one of the most effective ways to think of and execute the drawing of the figure. All the old masters used it to their advantage (see the book "MasterClass in Figure Drawing" by Robert Beverly Hale. Great book- Boring on the first read for some, but once you get into it and realize some of what he talks about, it's Juicy!!)

I used one of my more recent sketches as an example for you (of thinking in "planes".)
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=49610&stc=1&d=1163561847

Hope I could help enlighten you some.

When you get into massing, you will start to be able to "abstract" things so you can remember them easier. It really helps to abstract the figures when people are moving rapidly, such as here;
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=52717&stc=1&d=1164139655

Notice how abstract some are.. they are single line shapes, you just gotta kinda blur your eyes, and think of it in 2d shapes, and eventually those 2d shapes reflect 3d properties.

Good luck!

Nice progress, Enthombed! If you don't mind a recommendation, I think you might benefit from sketching out your figures, even your studies, first with either a blue pencil or a light hard lead - really push the weight and volume around in gestural strokes until the figure feels natural. You've got it on some of your more action-oriented poses, but it's easier to cheat good proportion with a strong rhythm in that area. Keep it up!

And some more shadowing to make em less flat. Do you start with drawing the eyes when you draw chicks? because it sometimes look to me like you build around the eyes. Hey enthombed, looking good, nice progress from page one.
The green lizard man got much better from the crits and touchups.
And the anatomy is getting there, just repeat it.

Your pen drawings are looking good, very controlled outlines on the sketches.
But you stress the rendering to much, it gets messy. Get a good reff and sit down and take you time, measure so you get everything right before you start to render. Going through the drawing ebfore you start the rendering will only help training you eye. And then take your time to render, try to see the different values. Go layer after alyer with the pen, and when it doesn't get darker try a softer pen.

Good luck and keep it up!

Hey Icaro! Yo dude, I haven't been on CA in a while. I see you ressurected my sketchbook, lol. Anyway, I have suggestions for you. When I look at your drawings, I see no construction lines or gestural lines. Which tells me that you are not doing enough searching for lines. I don't mean your drawings should be more scribbly. Make as many marks as you must before you are happy with the underdrawing. I would encourage you to spend more time focused on line then rendering right now. Once you become more confident with line, I can tell that rendering will be a breeze for you. Try to make the drawing look great without tone first. Study Bridgeman, Hogarth, and the classical masters. I prefer bridgeman to Hogarth, but Hogarth has very good lessons as well. Try to draw 100 heads/hands/figures in a day. Don't draw them poorly just to get 100 in. Draw quickly and confidently. You'll discover that to do 100 a day, you'll have to completely disregard rendering. Rendering, unfortunately drains more energy from artists than necessary. Anyway, I wish the best for you and your wife. Stay in touch Icaro :).

Hey man, nice to see you back. I think you should try to do more life drawings, specifically portraits- practice while someone is reading a book or watching TV, sleeping or talking on the phone.

Remember, from life! Generally, photos can teach you nothing that life can't tell you.

Try to get in a figure drawing class. See how Mr. Gist uses the pencil? Study how he uses line. He uses ellipses to see around the form. This helps the artist to see how the form turns in space. Focus on gesture. Final lines come after the searching part. Once all the proper proportions and distances are found.

Andrew Loomis was an illustrator during the 40's and 50's. Alot of his books are out of print. But I know there is a Loomis survival webpage out there somewhere. Buy his books. He knows his art :).

This is in regards to post #147

Hey Icaro, I'm going to use this post to help illustrate some points. Of course, my word is simply my opinion. Line is very subjective. The first drawing shows muscle attachments clearly. The gesture however is very weak. You have focused to much on clearly defining the muscles that you have forgotten to create an interesting pose. My friend Matyas often starts with a stick figure before fleshing out a character. We both like starting with a flat black silhouette (which is more easily done digitally). It just depends on what your comfortable with. When you get more comfortable with gesture you can start with a pinky and work your way out if you wish. At this moment, I would focus on the big shapes. Think about how bones attach before thinking about how muscles attach. And still, think about how to make a drawing attractive with out tone :).

Sketch pages 3 and 4 are your best drawings. I can see that you worked quickly to record Bridgeman's drawing. If I were you I would keep drawing from this book directly. You need to know how it feels to draw like this. Than you will understand how your drawing style differs.

One thing about your color sketches too. I think you should continue working with color, however, it would be more beneficial if you paint from life. Color is another game in itself, so it's better to discipline yourself in both. Set up still lifes, paint landscapes, portraits, but wait to color your sketches until A. the gesture is good and B. the tone is good. :)

Hope this helps Icaro
Eric

Hey man, Great work so far.
Keep up the anatomy studies, u are definately improving :)
I know they get tiring after a while but it slowl builds up knowledge in your head :)
As for tone, you should try simplifying your tone down to 4 solid shapes. It doesnt have to be too graphic but your form and shapes will read far better if you start in this way and be more pleasing to the eye. Then at the end (if you feel you need to), just deal with the transitions between those shapes. I am trying to discipline myself to do this far more. All the reading I'm doing, and art I'm admiring points towards this being my next major step to master to improve my art. I think you could benefit from similar studies :)

Here are some links right here on CA that might help you think in this way:

First up a real rough quick dketch by a guy called:
Kronos (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=202390&d=1189797927)
Squint up ur eyes and see how well it reads, then open up again and look at how little blending is going on. If you refined this sketch from here it would be great.

Secondly :
Chromosome (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=83802&page=13)

This guy is amazing, his line studies especially - you get so much about the form and mass and lighting, all from the way he simply defines the leading edge of the shadow. Admirable work, and an unbeatable lesson on how important the basic shapes are, even without ANY shadin/transition/modelling of the form :)
(I love his stuff and visit his sketchbook regularly).

Cavematty: hey man, thnks a lot for your advice here, yeah Chromosome is a great artist and i reallyl like how he work with his lines and shading, i really think get something from this guy, keep in touch too.

This time i trying to gain more time to my studies, i will try one thing different, in each week i will focuse in one part of the body and some try out with anatomy unusual to me, this week i will try studies about the head and some method to construct this.

I think the next week i will focuse in hands and legs, i donīt know, but i promise try my best and will try to post everyday.

Nice anatomy and good progress too, keep it up!.

I noticed that you use too much black when you shade your stuff, but in real life objects allways recieve some light, so why not try to use just less light in the shadow areas?, try it and youll see that things look better, also instead of using just black try using less black and use blue or violet, like if the object is yellow, the shadow part will look kind of blue, and you use some of green in the middle, try it to see how it looks.

Also, have you tried practicing lighting simple shapes and objects until you get them prefectly lighted with cast shadows and all?, like lighting spheres, ovals, cones, cylinders?, try doing that and then make simple abstract shapes to shade, it will make your work look so much better.

Keep posting your progress!, good luck.

Just flicked through your sketch book you got some very strong sketchs going there and showing good improvements. If i had to crit i think it is the faces the eyes are too wide just maybe take a bit more time on them and use ref always helps.

Another thing which is totally my own views and i am sure loads would disagree. I found drawing the muscle systems of the arm body etc, which i did loads of pretty useless when trying to drawn a realistic looking human. Learn the where and how of the muscle system. But i think i would have been better off drawing the body from photos, life etc and use those to work out where the muscles would be underneat. Well thats my 2 cents anyway.

Anyway must come back again and check out more of your stuff. Good work.

hey, i really like the photoshop fire ball... hes kool lol
but i see u have a prob with face proportions. sometimes u pull it off and alot of the time they looks slightly weird (like mine). so wat ive noticed is that ur eyes seem to be seperated a bit too much (i think maybe ur too scared of the eyes being too close together? i dunno). i read on a site that eye proportions r: 5 eye lengths across the width of the face (excluding ears).
if u want to no exact details, search around ... or even come to my sketchbook, there have been links given to me for this sort of stuff.
also feel free to comment/crit on my sketchbook when u have the time.

hey dude, about the digi. Check the proportions, the center line and the balance of the figure in order to get a more solid pose. Look the center of the chest and the center of the abs, they're not matching for a frontal pose like these.
If you're going for a imaginative pose, draw the head and find the center line of the gesture. start with simple lines to resolve the gesture first, don't rush it. Then where the weight is located. And then start adding some volume with basic shapes, and if you guide from your center line you can resolve these basics shapes in perspective according to your center lines. Then you can start thinking about anatomy. Make good use of bridgeman for this stuff.
Hope this help dude, keep working hard man, it's the only way.

I think in addition finding a pose you want and using it as reference while you draw your character will allow you to learn even more, faster, than out of your head :) Its great to test yourself that way sometimes, but there may be better ways of approaching things.

Its good your doing greyscale to start and not complicating it with colors. Flipping your image horizontally is often a key to finding some mistakes, it makes you re-evaluate what is on the page. same as upside down.

Keep going on the referenced stuff, it was fantastic to see it in the past few pages as well as some neat incorporated designs :) see you

What jakers says too, i have done that with loomis, figure drawing for all it's worth, the section with the different poses, i've learnt a lot by looking a pose and then drawing a imaginative one applying the stuff i learned from the pose. Also put more time in your construction and pay carefull attention to proportions. Right now you seem to rush it a little bit. I'll keep in touch.

mais mais mais dibujos, hoje aqui amanhã não se sabe, so you must give your best everyday right?, so keep studying.
For imaginative sketches, for example i'm doing the following, i choose an artist, for example take feng zhu, and as i soon i start doing sketches, i take a few looks to the elements he uses and then i do my thing, not copying, understanding and learning. Feng is just an example, take whoever you like learn the language, enviros, characters, creatures.

Hope it helps dude, always a pleasure to stop by, adeus hermano.

you seem to work extremely hard, I think you need put your focus into one area whether its anatomy, tech, vehicles etc. Try working in shifts and spend a week on each subject matter and then switch to something else. It really helped me doing things this way, it might work for you.

heyy icaro, good to see you're keepin' it up with the studies, they'll pay off sooner or later.
I see some major imprevoment with the figure in terms of a whole, but there are some proportion issues you should check, the length of the arms in the girls sketches are very long.
Anyways, keep up the hard work.

Yo! Long time since I've stopped by! :)

Good to see you churning out so many studies! The proportions are a bit off at times, but that'll correct itself as you go on :) Try to analyze your pieces and see where your problem areas are, and attack 'em in the next sketch ;)

The last one looks good! You could use a bigger valuerange, I think, but your definately heading in the right direction!

Thanks for visiting my SB!

Must've read dCept's post before or something, because I was gonna say exactly what he said in that first line, about proportions.
About the last painting: apart from the outlines that last painting is pretty much all soft edges, and that makes it look a bit fussy, that and the fact the shadow side is pure black, it needs more reflected lighting. And it would be better to have a background that isn't pure white.

It's looking good dude, keep drawing! :D

Great studies mate, you're definantly choosing the right path here, keep with it!.

As for your question regarding rendering and pencils and all that, I typically use a .5 mech pencil, but I really enjoy a .3, but I am too lazy to go out and buy them :). It's really good to have both so you can see what you like best. The advantage of using a mechanical pencil is so that your pencil tip is constantly sharp, as opposed to a normal pencil, which becomes blunt.

As for technique, I try to do 1 form at a time, going from dark to light. If you are hatching, be sure not to scribble up and down, Instead, after each stroke pick up the pencil. Work on this more and more and you will get better at it.

1 more thing, Remember lighting all the time! Hope this helps man, cheers!

Hey, on portraits, map out the proportions, dont even start putting in the individual features in until you've got everything in the perfect place. Try to make a day of your portraits. Make sure you spend as long as you can on the mapping out portion, hours if need be, to get everything right. This is the most important stage!

Good studies! As for pencil technique, I use both a mech pencil and regular pencils.. Usually I have a 2H regular for roughing shit out and such.. easy to erase, and I can put in a light valuepass as well. After that I go all chaotic with a HB regular, 2B regular and an HB .7 mech :D Sprinkle a little mechanical eraser and kneadable rubber on there for graphite removal.. hehe.. But hell.. everyone develops their own way of doing things.. get a few different kinds of pencils and see what feels best :)

wow, sketches on the last page look really good, you're improving a lot!
I like the handstudies, too. and the faces look a lot better in your last update.
your rendering looks a bit rushed at times, not giving enough credit to linework that looked pretty good already. take your time.
and now you better update, last one's been way too long ago!

Hi Icaro,
I agree with SprayNation. I would give the same advice.
Construction is important as is gesture. And I agree, you can explain alot with just line in simple overlaps and shapes. Until this 2 D lay-in with line works, rendering won't help explain your drawing.
All marks that you put in last should explain the marks that you put in first. Drawing from masters like Bridgman will also give you a library of lines to design a figure with. Keep studying Brdgman, Loomis for anatomy, proportions as well as design. Also keep in mind symmetry, especially in the face. Eric Gist is an excellent guy to study from, too. See how he connects his gesture lines to pick up different sections of the body.

You are working hard. With a bit of specific focus on basics, your concept characters will take on a different level. More power to you and your studies.
