Hi everyone, I just joined this forum recently! I found it through another site and saw all of these sketchbook threads. I was very inspired, because I recently decided that I need to improve my art.

I guess I'll tell you about my background as an artist. I'm 22, a self-taught artist, and will be graduating college later this summer with a degree in Graphic Design. I had first started drawing seriously when I was 17. I read the book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" (great book!) and taught myself how to "see." I did a lot of drawing from life and became pretty good at drawing realistically. Unfortunately, once I entered college I gave up drawing because 1)less time, 2)my teachers actually told me to give up drawing because I wouldn't need it in the Graphic Design field! One of my teachers also told me that I had no talent, and that art wasn't for me. So, being 18 and very naive at the time, I quit art for 2 years!

When I was around 20, I decided to start creating again. I took a painting class in college and fell in love with oils. Unfortunately, because of space limitations I can't paint in oils anymore, and they give me headaches too. Around that time I met some artists online who were selling their artwork through ebay. I wanted to try, and I did. I was doing mostly fantasy art, fairies and dragons. A few times my paintings sold for decent prices but for the most part it didn't work out too well. For ebay, I had to create a painting every week to maintain a following and this GREATLY affected the quality of my work. I just can't paint a masterpiece in a couple of days. I created a website, which is still up, www.artbylindsey.com.

I decided a few weeks ago that I really need to just learn all of the basics of art before I try to do anything commercial with my art. So, I came here to learn! Please feel free to be as harsh as you wish, I really want to grow as an artist.

So here are the first few peices in my journey.

This is a color sketch I did in Photoshop, of a girl who's picture I found at morguefile.com. I was trying the "blocking in" technique, which I had never done before. I blocked in the colors loosely and then built up the detail. It took a few hours...I'm slow!

A study of male proportions I copied from Loomis' Figure Drawing book.

Female proportions copied from Loomis' book.

That's all for now, I plan to practice as much as possible and show my progress here!

That blocking in one is hot. I love it. You did a beautiful job. It's a great start, and the stuff on your sight isn't technically bad either. Keep that practicing up, eh?

Welcome to CA!

Really awesome painting, and very good Loomis studies, I've recently been studying him a lot! You'll definitely get a lot out of this forum and see improvement with no problem if you keep at it.

Good to see new people with a strong sketchbook starting out. I'll be checking back soon!

Again, welcome to CA and keep posting and drawing!

Ian

Target: Thanks! The blocking in color technique was hard at first, but it seems to work well so I'll keep practicing it. It's fun to start out a little messy, too!

IanE: Thank you! Hopefully I can get some more sketching done today :)

Here's a very rough sketch I finished for a watercolor painting:

I'll be redrawing it a lot more neatly onto the watercolor paper, hehe. She's an angel/fairy who was sitting in a rose for so long that she became part of the rose. Her dress will fade into the rose and her hair will be tangled up in tree branches. I'll also be fixing the anatomy issues too :)
