Long time lurker of these forums, finally am able to make a thread: just got a nice new scanner and started a new sketchbook. I'm currently a junior at jenison high school in michigan.

My biggest influences are Wesley Burt and Armin Mersmann.

Here's some of my finished pieces, razuel.deviantart.com

Here are a couple of sketches to start off. Both are filled with either studies, things from my mind... or things I see (obviously).

I know there's an anatomy problem with the thumb in that one.

Fantastic first post!

Keep at it! Where you are now is incredible for your age! Makes me wish I started drawing sooner.

Really awesome stuff, post more I can't wait to see it.

Just turned 17. Thank you all, I'll keep updating.

I browsed through your sketchbook IanE. I really like your studies, something I have to get more indepth with.. as far as anatomy goes.

Nice sketchbook, you show good use of value.

It would be easier to comment on your work if you were to post larger.

Awesome update, thanks for stopping by my sketchbook!

What college are you applying to?

For my portfolio they wanted 3 environments, figure drawings (a 10-minute, a 20-minute, and a 30-minute), 3 still life drawings, and 1 of choice from those 3. What they were looking for were proportions, anatomy, realism, difficulty, and understanding of what you drew.

As for anatomy you seem to have a fairly strong grasp of what the outside should look like, but are all of these from reference or life? When it comes to drawing originally you need to understand the underlying structures of the body to get the forms and shapes you need to have a realistic drawing.

For anatomy, if you have no idea where to begin, start with George Bridgman's Constructive Anatomy, excellent book. Just don't make the same mistake I did and get Bridgman's Complete Guide to Drawing from Life... the editor screwed it all up, pictures are wrong, text doesn't make sense, it's all out of order. I was warned about this but forget, and now I'm stuck with it, haha. Also, check out www.saveloomis.org You can read all of Andrew Loomis' books there for free or you can probably find them online to download as .pdf files. Figure Drawing for All It's Worth is an excellent resource to begin with, and there's also www.tsofa.com where Michael Mentler teaches anatomy. He has some threads on this forum too, check him out he's incredibly nice and one of the best resources around.

Hope that's not too overwhelming! Don't sweat it about college, if I got in you can get in! Good luck, I'll check back soon.

Thanks for commenting in my sketchbook. You are better than me. I am jealous, miserable, and sweaty. Will I make it another year in this body?

You'll see a huge difference in these two sketches than the last.. they're drawn from life. I'm getting some GREAT advice from an illustration major at RSAD. Although these drawings don't look half as good as my photo ref drawings-- they're helping my skills a lot more, i've learned.

So far the critiques he gave me on these two are,

1. spend more time on them
2. create a composition
3. eventually move on to charcoal

Looking for more crits,

Still no critiques? please..

Don't get discouraged by lack of replies. This place is a bit slow sometimes.

The life studies look good. Don't worry, these studies are harder than working from photos, but keep practicing and you'll improve.

hey man. for your life studies, make sure your only looking through one eye. and that when you draw, you face the paper head on and not at an angle.

Well I tried setting my sketchbook up on an easel like a couple people have told me to do now. I found it very hard to draw lines with my pad up like that.. and I had to take it down to shade as well. It did seem to help with proportions, and angles up until that top one.

Oh, and here's the setup I had,

what amazing talent you have, I'm impressed with your shading and concept of light and dark. The way you've lit up some of the faces is very striking. The anatomy etc will come with practise, but youve got yourself a solid ground for building on.

some really great stuff here.
i noticed one thing though, the stuff that lacks in detail/life-like look seems to be stuff that you might not like to draw. studies are a great way to learn (in fact i really need to start up again :tihi: ) but if you find yourself getting bored (which is what it seems like to me) then you'll most likely end up rushing something (which is what i do at times) and it won't come out the way you wanted it to, or the way it's supposed to.
so my suggestion is if you find yourself getting bored of a stationary life study, walk away from it for a while. if it's just statinary objects they won't get up and walk away :P by the time you get back to the drawing your mind should feel a bit more refreshed and you can pick up where you left off :teeth:

cheers man :D looking forward to the next post

This is a drawing I did completely from imagination, to give you an idea of how I'm doing in that area. I'm getting pretty good at being able to draw faces from imagination, but I have a lot of work to do on the body.

I tried this smoke effect thing I saw in Wes' sketchbook, I really like how it turned out-- I think I'll use it in a project sometime,

Hey, man! This is really cool stuff.
Love the first ones, there really nice.
The Wes inspired one is awsome to.
Sometime the figures and studies are a little.. well.. out och shape tho, or how to put it. Try and use Straight lines to get the whole drawing straight. Know what I mean?

Anyway, great stuff, keep em' commin'.

You have really good stuff! So glad to know we are in the same group. I see you are really good with portraits, head drawings, I'll have to ask you to help me out on that area. =)
Have you tried ink or acrylics? They are really nice mediums. I like them b/c I get to use different sized brush and save me time to do the shading, compare to shade with pencils. Also they are not as messy as charcoal. Anyway, I'll check back everyday for your new stuffs. :D

The first one is randomness from my head, the second is a life study of a friend. I know I shouldn't have done the black background, but the background was a bunch of stuff that would have taken hours to draw. And the scanner doesn't pick up all of the shading, so it looks odd.

Hey everyone. Sorry to my sketchbook for taking such a long break-- end of school year so it's crunch time. I have 2 weeks left. This summer I plan on drawing for like 3-4 hours a day, plus I have life drawing classes I'll be taking at an art school over here (kendall)-- so I'll have tons of updates. This is going to be a big summer for me, tons of practice, nearing my portfolio preperation.

Here's a couple of sketches, mostly from imagination-- some from life.

Hey, I missed your last posting. :P Sorry about that.
I like the profile of the man, the facial feature is really nicely captured, especially the muscle around the nose. It reminds me of client eastwood.
The profiles in the other drawing all seem to have odd nose, it seems they are all pointing down too much and the nose tip is kind of large.
The boy in the corner could use more neck in my opinion. He looks rather scared and confused.
:) Keep updating.

I like this one (http://www.intense-effects.com/writingsketch.jpg) a lot. Your rendering technique is, as stated, damn good! But there are some anatomical issues with your faces (I struggle with them myself... hehe). Just keep doing them, and take a step back and look at your drawing, analyze what you're doing wrong and try to improve on it in the next one.

Keep 'em coming!

but you're too hasty sometimes. Take your time, be patient and it will come out even nicer.

Here's another anatomy study,
