I've been working myself through a bit of a rut (seems a lot of sculptors have been lately) and am starting to come out the other side now. Got a new camera and decided to take a break from sculpting and just get back into my photography for a bit to clear my head, and refill my creativity tanks...so to speak. I crawled back into the Kong sculpt, and thought I'd post up where I am now after a couple more days of working on it here and there.
I still have a lot of details to finish on it. Kong's leg fur, hand details, teeth for both him and the T-rex's lower jaw and add in the Ann Darrow somehow to show scale. (I'm thinking tree stump with roots running onto the existing base...she could be standing or sitting on it in terror and awe..I dunno...we'll see) I also want to have Kong's feet displacing the earth as well...give him a bit more weight that way, and add those little details that I always do to make it special. (skulls and such)

We'll see how it turns out....

I think you are the best sculptor in the world. I love it. I just got my Super Sculpey in the mail and am attempting a piece, I'll keep you posted on my progress. I dig the scene here, great textures to be sure. If there is anything worth working on it's Kong's one fisted hand and his feet, they seem like they're unfinished. Maybe some more skin folds and texture would bring out the real, like the great work on the fur, and the great skin of the t-rex. Both really make the subjects real. Great great stuff as always! Keep it up, you're my mentor. :donk:

great start man! love the fur! I think Kong’s face could use a lot of work, after just finishing my own gorilla-ish peace and finding a lot of reference I feel I have the right to point it out >:D LMAO shoot I wish it had the picture here so I could comment better, but I think the main issues are the brow, nose, and the checks/side of the face, also real gorilla fur varies in length over the body, but then again I don’t think king Kong's does, so its all good. keep up the good work.

Thanks Tyler...go for it, and post up whatever you get done. If you need any help getting going..feel free to e-mail me.

Flork- Hahaha...I totally have been over this stuff in my own mind a million times. I know exactly what you're saying, and I thought about the fur thing. His arms actually have a bit longer fur, and so will his legs. I actually JUST changed his face today after taking these pics, and I'm more happy with it now. A lot of stuff you see is just place holders for what I have in mind. I want to give him scars on his face, and also work on his eyes a bit more. (You can't see them in the pics, but they are there) I have about 50 different Gorilla photos that I googled for reference, and hopefully by the time I'm done...it'll be just right. Of course Kong is a gorilla, but he's also a BIG MONSTER ONE....so he's gonna be a bit different. Anyhow, thanks for the reply..it totally confirmed some of the things I was thinking about. :tihi:

If i could also add my 2 cents...which is probably worth a lot less.

I would make the T-rex's head just a little larger in scope, the shape is correct but size seems to be more of an Allosaurus than T-rex. Kong looks old in and around his eyes, he also seems to be looking straight on more than at where his fist will land on the T-rex even if you were to have his pupils looking out from the side. Furthermore Kong's forearms are not massive enough for my tastes, his arms get thinner as they reach the wrist instead of larger as a silverback gorilla's would. All in all it is a very striking pose and the talent which is displayed in the piece is superb.

Hey thanks for the input. I've been battling myself through a sculpting slump as of late...so any opinions are always useful to me. This Kong is my version of him...the way I want to see him. I won't be finished it until I'm satisfied myself. I'm starting to come out of my slump I think as I'm seeing things again the way I used too. (funny, a lot of sculptors I know have been hitting walls lately too)

Anyhow, I changed his face a bit to resemble an ape more, and though there's still a lot of areas I want to perfect....I think it's looking better. The fur taks the longest...there's definitely areas I want to improve upon, but it'll come in time. I've only put about 35 hours into the whole thing so far, both Kong and T-rex. Just to give you an idea of how much time it took to get to where I am now with this. Mind you...there was a space of time in there where I didn't touch it...just couldn't seem to sculpt to save my life. So instead of wrecking it...I took a break.

i think it would benefit if u turned the gorrilla's head towards his enemy

Thanks for the replies guys.

Manslauter- I can see why you'd think that, but I have the eyes turned towards the dino, (hard to see that I know...dark pics...need more lights) and that's how I wanted it to look. Kong is bringing his other arm around in a swinging motion, and having his head where it is I think helps that look...almost as though he's gonna fall into the dino with his fist as he swings with his whole body full force. I'm thinking of positioning Kong's back foot up in the air more before I'm done, and I think that'll help the look I'm shooting for. Hopefully I explained this clear enough...I hate when I complicate simple things. :dur: Thanks again! ;)

lol manslauter not everything have to be that boring eh ... the action of the arm explains the headposition perfectly i think.

Okay, I added in a big stone skull.....I think it balances things out a bit more.
Still have to finish up Kong's hands and feet, plus add LOTS more moss and foliage on, and to the Stone Skull, add in Ann Darrow, and remove a finger from each of the T-rex's hands....I just realized in my Dinosaur Encyclopedia that they only had 2 each.

Anyhow...here's yet another update...it's getting there. I'm not saying it's almost done...because everytime I say that....I find more to do on it. :dur:

Very nice work on the scuplture scotty. It's come a long way, and it keeps getting better and better. Congrats!

I think adding in the stone helps to balance the piece out a lot. It looks too blocky right now,(I know you just put it on there) but it reminds me of the skull on captain hooks island. It might help if you reference the movie and it might be a bit more convincing if you the piece into a section of an island(I know its just more work for you, but in the end it'll make it such a nice piece). With little palm trees and perpahs a road or such.

This is utterly awesome! I saw it over at the Clubhouse forum too.

I have no idea how you are able to do that with Castilene, it blows me away!

Hey thanks for the input guys...I appreciate it. I'm currently working on the foliage around the skull, and bunch of other little things that just have to be done before I'll be happy enough with it. All your inputs are appreciated. I'll post up new pics once they are warranted.:^^:

Hey Marty...how's it been going? :}

I've been away from my sculpts for a bit...just a lot going on for the last while outside of sculpting...so this Kong has been on the shelf. (it actually fell and broke into about 5 pieces, but because it's done in castilene I was able to repair it)
Now, I'm finally back into it, and here's an update...not done yet, but GETTING THERE! ;)

I remember watching this thread a couple months back, and am glad to see that you're still going on this piece. However, the scale of the monsters does not seem to be as massive as it was. While they are sculpted well and seem to be a main part of your piece now, I feel that the skull and leaves make this seem more like a gorilla slugging a velociraptor, instead of King Kong vs. a T. Rex. You spoke of placing a woman in the scene to show the scale, and maybe that will fix it. I just don't see the correlation between this epic battle and a giant stone skull...

Overall, great work. I'll be watching this one 'til it's done.

Thanks Soaps! I understand your POV I think. Just wait until you see it with Ann Darrow added in standing on top of the stone skull...I think she'll be the key that makes everything work. (I hope):rendered:

Hey! I've been meaning to bug you about getting rid of the Rex's third finger since you first posted this, and you finally did it! Now to be really accurate you should rotate his hands so they face palm in. :perv:

i think there should be pressure on the neck of the rex because of kongs grip- so far it looks more like kong's hand is placed there, hovering just over the rex's neck and not deforming the skin at all.

great work otherwise! :)
