View Full Version : Misc stuff (upd page2)

Here's some stuff from a printable tabletop-RTS game I was working on a while back. These are only the units. The aliens use cocoons to reproduce and the humans use buildings. I'm doing elfs too.
The colored things are a test. Perhaps I'll use a print on request web thing to distribute it. Most ppl don't have a color printer and it needs to be on thick gloss paper too.
Would anyone be interested in such a game? I never seen a tabletop RTS game myself, but it should work if kept simple. I can post the rules and stuff for beta testing later if ya like.

Dwarfspider droid design. Some sort of sloppy 'Sparth type' rendering. It's a design from Starwars (my fav from the new movies) that I tweaked a bit, sorta like a heavy version.

I don't know what "RTS" means, but if it's like Warhammer 40k, I'd probably love it :)
keep it up, I'm looking forward to see the finished game.

To clarify tabletop RTS, It's a Tabletop / board game verison of SC, CC, TA, Dune2, those sort of games. You build factories and those build units. I'm keeping the construction part simple or it might get hard to keep track of all running processes.

Man I like the tanks and other such machinery, the apc too or whatever it is:) Are ya gonna make perspective views of these things too? would love to see those warbeasts in action.
And yea, I think an rts board game would be kinda cool... but keeping it REALTIME might be hard :p
And my guess is turnbased has already been done. nevertheless, cool designs:)

Yeah, It would be turnbased. I already made most of the core rules, and I managed to write them so I didn't have to define that many exceptions and extra bugfix rules. Consistancy is the key. If course when you make things turnbased you have to sacrify some things but realtime is impossible....

Theo> Yeah, I'm from Sweden. There's a lot of Swedes or nordic ppl lurking around on the art forums.
I might do some scenes with the units involved, and use as illos in the manual to bring the universe alive.

I LURV it! Like cucaracha said: It is Warhammer 40K inspired, is it not?
Lurv that 40K game...

Made some elf tanks. The elfs are superior but more expensive. The organic aliens are cheap and poor, humans are inbetween.
I got a zillion pencil thumbnails left to color.... It's fun to make unit variations. I'm not sure if I'm gonna angle all turrets forward...
I cant do any isoviews cause that would look odd when rotating the units on the table.

is it really take long to color?

I worked at an image height of about 500 pixels in PS 5.5 and it took about 45 minutes per tank because I was experimenting, once I get rolling I guess I can do them in 20 mins or so depending on size. Infantry units will be faster to do of course.
With about 3*10 unit types and a couple of variations of each. 70 units perhaps... plus buildings... arghhh... I'll have to finish one race at a time... starting with humans which are the norm.

I like them. I think it's a pretty ambitious project. I don't really play games as much as I used to, and I was never really into table top games but I think there's probably a market out there for this sort of thing.
Keep up the good work.

are you gonna make the unit action as good as starcraft?

When it´s better than Epic in Warhammer 40k than I know some people who are interested :D.
Good designs, seem to me a bit GW oriented.

Cool designs and also : cool idea to do (r)ts game on tabletop! Are you planning to cut the units out of cardboard? What do you use as a surface? I experimented with a similar (but simpler) game idea, and i managed to make lots and lots of hexagonal terrain tiles from foamboard. Remarkably sturdy stuff, and you can paint it or print on it. But i used standard wooden components for the units and buildings. Very simple.
Is there any place where I could see more on the game or is it *secret* ?
Well anyhow good luck and i hope to read (see?) more of it!

Thanks.
It's pretty standard turnbased tabletop, but with the ability to build units and buildings of course. The player will start with a small base and a few defensive units, perhaps a turret (to prevent rushing) and some builders. You can't really compare it with a realtime RTS.
The prints will go on some thick paper, perhaps I'll consult some print on demand web thingy. You'll have to cut out the units and play on a table or any flat surface. Terrain could be printed also.
The elf stuff is definately GW inspired (skimmer tanks). The humans are based off Dune II (inf, h-inf, trike, quad, l-tank, s-tank, mega-tank etc...). The alien designs are sorta just insect inspired.
Here are some construction units concepts (not using the crab things). I gave some of them weapons (allowed by techlevel 3 structure or battle card). They are yellow as all cool contruction bots are (like the loader from aliens).

Once I get adsl I'll compile a project site or something.

Worked some more on the elftanks:
I cut off the artillery one (I had too many wedge shaped tanks), I'm probably gonna angle the barrel on it upwards.
The elfs aren't much for using infantry units, they use their superior hover tank types for everything (Trusting hightech). Slow to build but armed with a variety of wierd and powerful energy weapons.
What colorscheme works best on the troopers (lil fellas in the left bottom corner). A or B? I like B best I think even if I'd like the overall color of their uniform to be dark.
The dark blue was meant to be black at first, but I dunno what happened....

if you find a programmer you could make yourself a 2d turn base rts game as well, that would be cool to have a working game in you portfolio on your webpage. hobby and novice programmers are hungry for artists.

There are 4 races now:
Apes (humans)
Bios (aliens)
Elfs
Rebels (a few weak scenario units)
Tempted to do other races too, orks, dwarf, darkelf, etc...
I'm might not finish it, knowing myself. If I do finish it, It'll be in a couple of weeks / a month or so.
I'm working on a computer game RTS aswell, but all programmers got their own projects so...
I'm too poor at coding myself.
---
New units, some are old tho (inked ones and tank). I'm gonna redesign those.
I made a military version of the construction bot, and changed the color on the one with the stolen elf tech gun. The legged things are walkers, gonna be constr. bot colored or military green. All the ape units are green/white. Elfs are dark blue/white, Bios have mixed organic colors.
The canvas size is close to how it will be printed, with margins. 261ppi currently, jpg at 33%. I hope that's enough for print, should be.
http://home.swipnet.se/zebes/apes1.jpg
Woriking on the manual, rules and unit profiles now... Haven't playtested once, I'm calculating things instead. Trying to figure out how to get the most gameplay dynamics out of the simplest possible rules.
