Both sides! As artists, we're already the no.1 tree-killers on planet earth... Might as well not be wasteful while we're at it.

I don't. You never know when you might draw something scan worthy and you don't want the other side showing through. Also, I use a lot of inks and markers. I have a hard enough time trying to prevent them from bleeding onto other pages let alone the other side of the page they're on.

I do alot of rendering in my sketchbook so if i was going to draw both sides I'm going to have a weird mirror match showing through my paper. I guess it really depends on what you do and what you use on the sketchbook.

I try to. However, if I'm using inks or smudge-types like charcoal or soft pencils then I gotta abandon the next page.

I'm cheap. A 24 page book becomes...48 when double sided!

If its meant to be rough outs to help me visualize certain things, yes both sides. But serious drawings after finalizing the elements are always on one side. Like most folks say you never know when you might have a gem.....that and I use pens and markers liberally like everyone else. Also sometimes if you use watersoluble graphite pencils and you need to produce a wash, then the other side is basically f8cked anyway.

The sketchbooks I use have 110lb paper. Since the pencil doesn't show up at all, it'd be silly not to use both sides. The only time I don't is if I use marker.

I always do except if I used watercolors on that page.

When I draw in pencil I always use bothe sides, but when it comes to watercolor and markers... no way!

I use both sides. It feels like a waste to only use half of the drawing surface, especially since it's all anatomy studies at the moment and I'm not rich enough to buy a new sketchbook too often.. I'm not exactly filling my book with masterpieces right now. :painting:

Both sides when it's sketchy, one page when I go mad with inks, paint etc.

I usually use only the right-hand pages, since I tend to use markers and inks a fair bit, and they bleed through. Since the sketchbooks I'm using at the moment only have 90gsm paper, I don't often draw on both sides because like Exo said, when scanning I've sometimes been able to see through to the other side of the paper, which does not make for pretty images.
I do use the bleed-through to my advantage sometimes, though, if I douse a page in ink to tone the paper, I'll often sketch on both sides so I don't waste the ink.

i agree about the scanning, so i don't either.

I draw on copymachine paper (160g, smooth), and I don't wanna leave some sketch rubbing against another paper or have them transfer, so, one side for me.

Both sides... its a fuckin' sketchbook..SKETCH being the operative word here...but then again I only sketch in ballpoint pen so nothing smears, use gouach in it too and use both sides. Won't use graphite in my sketchbook, but if I was doing anything "finished" it sure as hell wouldn't be in a sketchbook, thats for quick studies and comps and crap..

you need a "sometimes" category because if i decide to use charcoal or something like that it just gets messy...but if its just plain graphite id probably use both sides...
oh and for those who must print out reports of any kind. I find it useful to save the messed up reports (didn't see spelling error until after you hit print, etc. ) and draw on the back. But i think many people probably thought of this. But for those who didn't i hope you saw the light! :D

jstadabbler: Yeah, I have a big pile of useless printouts and junk paper, as long as it's smooth and clean on one side, it's good fodder for sketching. :)

I draw on all right sides. Then when i'm outta room I start drawing on backs if need be.

One side, just because i worry about bleed through. Plus I press pretty hard with pencils, so that causes enough problems on the next page as it is.

i use only one side,as
a)I'm too lazy to rotate my sketchpad everytime i'm finished with a page
b)i need to hold my pic against the light sometimes to check in reverse mode(?) if i made any errors(just like holding it infront of a mirror)
c)i don't wanna smear my pencils.

I use both sides when idly sketching, but generally I only draw on one, because if it turns out good and I want to scan it, two sided = having to erase lots of stray lines in PS.

Meh, just stuff a piece of paper behind it.
