I teach gesture drawing at BYU for the preanimation and animation majors (knowing nothing of animation myself..illustration BFA...). As part of their class they have to do a lot of outside sketchbooking from nature/life and so I draw in my sketchbook in class from time to time. These are all quick poses with a couple of exceptions and mostly done in class. We mostly draw with conte crayons and pencils and I'll put some of those up once I shoot some new pictures of them.

During the rest of my time, I've been studying at William Whitaker's studio here in Provo, Utah. During the first month of being there he had me paint little abstract and not so abstract paintings to study the quality of paint, color mixing, and paint strokes. These are a small (I did hundreds and hundreds) of them. Most are around 2-3 inches long and painted on tracing paper (easy to store, non porous, and stackable!). These are all from mid-january to mid-february. I've done more and other "activities" since then.

an example of a "creative" execise in the 350 class I teach. During the last hour I have them draw random abstract shapes on their pages and have them fit the figure to the shape through distortion, stretching, ballooning, bending and twisting. This is one I did on st. patrick's day, hence the clovers and the superfluous fairy. I thought I'd do a quick painter underlay as well for kicks.

Some recent gesture drawings, they're anywhere from 10 seconds to 20 minutes in duration. They're mostly done with a 2b conte pencil or with a 2b conte crayon on 18x24 smooth newsprint.

June 1, 2005 :: Update

Some in class drawings from my winter and spring semester classes. The first four are from a creative exercise where I have my students draw an interesting abstract shape on their page and they have to fit the figure within it through distortion. It helps them to conceptualize the figure within their heads and apply design ideals to their drawings.

I brought in some copies of photos of deep sea animals and have them combine the scrap with the poses.

The little oil sketches made a huge difference in how I paint. Hopefully I'll be able to pull from that exercise for a long time. I really recommend that to anyone.

I put up a new site ( http://www.petersakievich.com ) so the links to those images that were above previously no longer work. To see those gesture drawings and others visit these links. The new site is still under construction so some parts may or may not be there.
