im having a lot of trouble generating really dynamic poses for sketches, or finished pieces, everything just ends up looking either too flat or too relaxed...what should i do?

Have a look at "Dynamic Anatomy" by Burne Hogarth, its a book that (as the title sugests) cover dynamic anatomy, and it does so damn well. And do a lot of life drawings, that has always helped me. =)
ISBN for the book: 0-8230-1550-5

I always look in comic books when I want a really dynamic pose. The poses and action in comics can often be acceptable exaggeration for even a more traditional piece :)
