I like the composition, but I am confused on which image is more the correct one, the first image has more constrast and the 2nd is alot lighter.

Nice
I've never tried egg tempera. You just use powdered temperas and egg...whites I assume?

hey thanks for stopping by everyone

Matt Smith: the second one is closer to my piece. There is too much blue and i lost some contrast. Plus the paint has too much glare. sorry for the confusion thanks for the composition complement.

Gilead: actually we used basic pigments, water and only the yolk from the egg. Meaning no egg white or any type of liquid covering the egg yolk or even the shell of the egg yolk itself. We used a meduim consisting of 3 parts water and 1 part egg yolk. According to my professor that is true to the original method used in the renaissance.

Bryceart: lol thats funny you noticed them second. maybe i actually did something slightly subtle?!? Did you go to RISD? im a junior right now after taking a couple of years off (with no painting....ugh!) I'm in a master painting technique class right now and were studying caravaggio and titan. after break its rembrandt! I'll be postign some mediocore copys of theyre stuff check it out! thanks for stopping by man!

staceydiana: thanks man, the roosters were fun to paint with gas masks....heh heh. with egg tempra things can take a long long long time. you have to use a small brush i used a 1 and a 0.5 and paint in hatches. also as far as ingridents go ill have to find my notes and then post them up. but from what i remeber all you need is basic color pigment and egg yolks only. The inside of the yolk, none of the yolk shell or egg whites can be used to make the paint. for the medium you need 3 parts water and 1 part egg yolk same rules apply to the yolk thing. i think thats it.

Yes, I'm a RISD grad, class of 89. My claim to fame is I was in the same class with John Foster-now he's in a class by himself-Ha-Ha!
I was a serious fuck up in school, didn't learn a damn thing, now I'm playin catch-up trying to teach myself. Don't make the same mistake I did! Good luck.

hey Bryce, my gf was in a class jon foster taught. Yeah i hear you on the slacking thing. I think RISD is what you make of it or your screwed cause theyll eat up up and spit you out broke as shit! I was going there a couple of years ago and was slacking like crazy. I was taking out all the loans on my own too so i was like wtf?, im wastign my money. so i left the school and tried to figure out what was wrong with my stankin' ass. two years later and a year after a state college art dept. i got my shit together and went back trying to kick ass...well the kicking ass is going well. but, im not the one kickign ass, thats RISD kicking mine. lol. Either way im alot more focused and have a burning desire to get better! and actually i can see the changes already a little slow tho'!

that's great! i know i am supposed to give more in depth critiques or rather everyone is, but this painting is coming along wonderfully.

it is already feeling like , hmm... i wish my art history was better, well feeling like egg tempura paintings that i think of when egg tempera is mentioned. the piece is ambitious and well planned out. you were right to take the time off from school and come back. when you have drive and know exactly what you want from your education you can make it work for you 100 fold.

rich have we met?

Dan, you are too kind. Oh, I goofed off as well. Took me years to learn enough after school to finally get some freelance work.

thanks Jon, we havent met, but im sure you know my gf gabby. Shes got some kick ass watercolors! I've was researching alot of common compostions of egg tempra and renaissance painting while doing this piece. I felt i wanted to do something traditional but make it updated and my own. well theres a hit or miss! Lately, I've really been trying to figure out how to paint witrh oils, its like i see too much color and cant break it down in a simple color or i get muddy?!?! Its like a secret code or something! anyway your tutorials on this site helped me alot and your a huge inspiration. thanks alot.

when you post your notes please let me know...i am used to tiny almost uslessly small brushes i used to paint everything in a .05 or a triple zero brush..yeah... i was the kid in painting class with my nose an inch from the canvas...RISD was accepted ( by some fluke) and then heard the stories of chewing and spitting---good for you for coming back for a second helping!!!!egg yolk? and water my god...how quickly does it dry out? reminds me of the texture of baking...:)

So many people just go through the motions of a higher education...

cheers

This site Kamapigments (http://www.kamapigment.com/index_en.html) has articles on how to make your own paint, from pigments and basic stuff, be it egg tempera, oil, acrylics or watercolor. I thought some of you might be interested in it. They also sell everything it takes.

I'm quite tempted to start making my own paint (it appears to be cheaper in the long run) but it looks troublesome.

I absolutely love the painting, the only thing that annoys me a wee bit is how big and 'even' the second of the branches coming out at an angle is. It doesn't look like it's part of the main tree.
