New Stuff on the Bottom.

Hi everyone.

Been lurking for a long time now with few posts in-between, so I've finally decided to start posting regularly.
I am a highschool student here in Toronto, Canada, working towards a career in concept art/illustration. After looking through the sketchbook threads here, I've been inspired and have been making myself draw in my sketchbook for at least 90 minutes every day. This thread will hopefully motivate me to work faster and improve myself more.
Comments and critiques are most welcome!

Here's a quick dump of some of the recent work I've done in my sketchbook.

You seem to be progressing rather well, I recommend you just practice more anatomy/proportions. Everything seems good, nice and loose.

Not much else to say, just keep practicing.

Thanks for the comments incognito. :)
I was actually planning on doing a couple of studies based on some of the anatomy books I have, just as soon as a friend of mine returns them.

I don't think I'll have enough time to draw today, too many projects due next week, so I'll post some stuff from my life-drawing class that my teacher returned (she keeps most of our stuff until the end of the year for some reason :\)

a 20 minute study:
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/abc-001.jpg
I think these were 30 second gestures:
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/gestures.jpg
10 minute clothed proportion study:
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/christian.jpg
A series of 15 minute clothed studies from different angles:
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/christian2.jpg
And a skeleton study on which I seriously messed up the proporitons:

That deformed skeleton actually looks really cool! Almost like a Gulf War Syndrome Baby's skeleton...

Good 30 second gestures, gestures are always a big help, along with drawing dime-sized figures! Really helps you to get the proportions right because at that size it's all proportion, no detail! Keep working hard on the portraits and anatomy studies, they're both coming along.

The only critique I had was that there are too many jagged and stray lines on your sketches. I did this too, but the way I got past it was to think about the lines and shapes, visualize them in my head, before I put them down on paper.

Keep it up and you've got an insanely strong start to your sketchbook!

Ian

Thanks a lot for the comments and crits IanE. :)

Yeah, 30sec gestures and small studies are really helpful, I have a bunch more of them that I drew during some of my classes, I'll post them up once I actually find them.

And I agree with you on my linework, its something that I've trying to work on for a while. I'm planning on doing a couple of pages of sketches just in pen, that way I'm forced to get the correct lines and forms the first time. :)

I think I'll have some more work posted either tonight or tomorrow morning.

very nice stuff !

but one thing i noticed is that you are very uneven in your art, the result can vary too much some times.. almost looks like 2 artists.. one suggestion would be maybe to think of tightening it up alittle bit ? 2 cents, take em or throw em away :P

cheers !

SirGreenSock
March 28th, 2005, 12:36 PM
Thanks a lot for the reply! :)

I agree with you on the "uneven-ness" and looseness in my work. It's something I still have to work on.
My main problem right now is slowing down and taking my time with my work rather than trying to finish too fast and miss on the details. :)
I'm actually starting to do a couple of master study paintings for my history class, so maybe that will help me tighten up.

Another update, haven't had time to do any studies yet, too many due dates.
I did do some sketches, they'll do for now.

I'm going to come back to this one later to fix his anatomy and give him some armor or something.

Hey Sir Green Sock....I can notice a progression in your work. You're starting to notice proportion is vital and would be intersting to see where this would this would lead you in the next few months of sketching....keep it up:)

I'll have another update tomorrow, been doing some anatomy studies that I'll scan in the morning.

Wow, long time no update

Been in a bit of a creative slump and overwhelmed with schoolwork for a while, but I still managed to fill up an entire sketchbook since the last update.
Most of it is boring stuff while I was in the slump, I'll just post the stuff worth looking at and spare some bandwith
Thanks to everyone for the support and help to far, this community has really inspired me to work harder and improve. I've recently come out my slump, and drawing seems to be more fun than ever now. Lots more stuff to come, only 2.5 weeks of school left!!
Here are the pics, sorry if there are too many, had a lot to share...

hey man. good stuff. i like your style a lot
the way you render is really nice.
i think that first SP and those torso sketches are my favorite for this update.

i cant really find too much to crit. the only suggestion i have is that you try to get away from things you're comfortable with doing. it seems like you do a lot of portraits and figure work, but pretty much no still lifes. would probably be really helpful just to challenge yourself more.

keep up the good work

what's up greensock?

you've got some really nice stuff here. i really like how you keep your pencils/inks really loose. it really shows not just your work, but how you work.

i really like the self portrait/color study from april 10th. i know you put it down as a failed attempt, but i disagree. you may think it failed because it doesn't look exactly like you, but i think it shows a real understanding of the act of painting.

keep up the good work, i'll keep checking in.

In lifedrawing we were suppose to draw a classmate and make him bald. :\

These next two are from reference photos. I felt I needed to start drawing more nudes in my sketchbook.

http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/sknude.jpg
And lastly, a 45 minute Photoshop self-portrait. I'm going to try to get into the habit of doing one PS sketch at least every other night. This is at actual size, first time working that small in PS.

Your sketchbook is showing some good progress, I gotta admit I really admire your watercolor stuff, it's very expressive in terms of color. It looks like you're on the right track, keep us updated.

Thanks for the replies everyone!
Dan1989 - Thanks for the kind words. Up until recently I really hated watercolour, but now I love em since I loosened up a bit.
The Fat Kid & Deimos - Thanks for the compliments. :)

More work, been sick and mostly bored.
I got an ISP for my life drawing class though (my topic is the mechanics of the human arm), so I'll be doing a lot more anatomical studies of the arm. Does anyone have any suggestions on good books to look into? Currently I'll be using Loomis, Grey's Anatomy, Anatomy for the Artist and Dynamic Anatomy. Any others that would be useful?

Anyway, unto the work:
Some Rembrandt studies, didnt like the second one, left it unfinished
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/Rembrandtsp.jpghttp://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/Rembrandtpl.jpg
Self portait with acrylics. Been experimenting with ways of rendering skin tone. This one is alright I guess.

Two studies from photos:

Another self portait, with marker this time. Messed up one of the eyes though.

Subway sketches. I really gotta try and make it to the Toronto subway sketch group one of these days...

Hey! as i began to scroll through this (http://www.projectsole.ca/sketchbook/ca/sketch.jpg) caught my eye from the start. It looks as if you spent a lot of time on the face, and really sorta tried to just "suggest" the rest of the body. I do this a lot too, and it fails more times than it works (at least for me). I have come to the realization that I have gotten too caught up in the folds and seams of cloth to really concentrate on the form of the body and the clothing. If you think of the contours and shape and emphasize the form THEN add the folds, the folds add to the form and allow the eye to read them more easily. Simply a suggestion, and of course you can take this as you will. Keep up the good work.

You seem to have a unique style; it's pretty cool. One thing though, do you have trouble with hands? I saw many were scribbles and scratches. Some of them that you did draw were a little small. I am just asking. I was just an observation. Your stuff still looks better than mine!

I saw that you were in SBG Lite. I you get a chance check out mine (I need motovation.)

Wow, Thanks for all the comments everyone!

Nutter & The Fat Kid - Thanks a lot for the kind words!

Mr. Blonde - You're perfectly right with your comment on form. It's actually on of the areas I planned on exploring next. I found that especially recently, I have had a lot of trouble with figuring out the figure beneath the clothes.

Kane - Thanks, and yeah, I do seem to have trouble with hands. I've been looking at a lot of anatomy books, now I'm going to have to start doing more hand studies to help me with the form.

Here's the stuff from this week. Not a lot, nor is there anything great in this update, I spent most of my time scribbling and experimenting.

Some thumbnail gestures:
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/thumbs.jpg
A few subway sketches I did on the way to an art store:
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/subwee.jpg
Self Portrait, experimenting with stencils. First one, it was fun to cut.
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/stencilself.jpg
Got a bigger mirror, so did some quick sketches
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/two.jpg
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/reach.jpg
Watercolour self-portrait. I rushed, then it got all muddy :(
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/wc.jpg
Got my hands on an animal anatomy book, I plan on doing more sketches from it.
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/rawr.jpg
Just some sketches done in class to fight boredom. Mostly doodles and classmates
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/dribble.jpg
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/paulio.jpg
I found a site that has lots of photos of death masks. Decided to draw couple of them. I'll do some more next week.
James Joyce

William Shakespeare
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/BillyS.jpg
Nikola Tesla
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/tesla.jpg
And, the crappiest drawing of the bunch, Julius Caesar
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/caesar.jpg
Last one is a self portrait done with willow charcoal. First time using it, really love the way it behaves. Probably one of my better self-portraits!
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/charme.jpg

Thats it for this week. Im also working on some paintings, but I'll scan those once they're dry. :)

Farvus - Thanks, the lion was an interesting study. I plan on doing more soon!

That Fat Kid - Thanks, yeah I agree that everyone's sketchbooks are probably more interesting to see in person. That stencil self-portrait I did is actually the cover of my newest sketchbook. :)

Here's some stuff for today. Was bored and ended up doing a lot of sketches and experiments:

Ok, I'm really sorry for the lack of updates for like a month now, school really caught up to me with way too many projects, so I had no time at all to scan. I did get a lot of drawing done, however most of it is just experimentation and drawings of classmates in school.
Things are slowing back down, so I SHOULD have time to scan my sketches more often and upload daily again, i hope.
Here's the batch of recent stuff:

Watercolour on primed paper experiment that turned out way too messy to be finished, as well as a redo of it about a month later, which turned out better:

I did another self-portrait with willow charcoal since the previous one was crap. This one turned out way better:
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/oct-33.jpg
This self portrait was interesting to do. I took a photo of myself, but I shook the camera to cause a sort of double image, then I drew myself from the photo. Also trying out Magic Man's powdered graphite and pencil technique. Its harder than he makes it look.

I can clearly see a progress from the beginning of your sketchbook to now. YouŽre getting better with faces!

One suggestions: You used a grid for the Madonna copy. Try to see the shapes... in an abstract way and try to translate them without the grid. That way youŽlle get more self confident with life drawings as well. I practicde that with watercolors. Get down the shapes/planes without an underdrwaing and youŽll notice the difference. It isnŽt easy, I know, but I think that it could help you :)

SirGreenSock
November 8th, 2005, 12:53 PM
Johnny78 - Thanks a lot. You're perfectly right about working with shapes and planes more. I've actually been trying to do that recently, but so far nothing good came out. But, hey, at least im practicing! :)

Here's more stuff from yesterday, went on a field trip to the Agriculture fair, and got to draw lots of animals. They moved a lot, so theyre mostly gestures, but it was a great experience nonetheless!

I know that itŽs very challenging to draw animals, as most wonŽt keep the same position for more than a few seconds.... So: cool stuff.

Spacemanchris - Thanks a lot for the compliments. I like the rougher work, too.

Johnny78 - Thanks, I enjoyed doing the value studies. The pigs were really cute, until some annoying kids started making noise until they woke them up, so they got all grumpy :(
I really loved drawing those animals, I'm gonna have to come back there when I can.
This Thursday Im actually going to see the Body Worlds 2 (http://www.ontariosciencecentre.ca/) show at the science centre. That'll be fun to draw, too!

Here's some stuff I did today

No model in life drawing, so we did a sketch of one of the classmates. I focused on the value of the face and the likeness, and am happy with it.
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/nov-35.jpg

These two were quick self-portraits. I like the first one, it has good value. The second one was too rushed, so I messed the proportions. Gotta learn to slow down once in a while.

That Fat Kid - Thanks, recently I've been using HB pencils exclusively, but I've noticed that different brands of pencil create different looks and effects. Right now I'm mainly using KohiNoor pencils, both regular graphite and the woodless progresso pencils, they layer lighter than staedtler but can still achieve the same darkness. The paper is just a regular cheapo Canson sketchbook.
I like the gestural lines, too. They often look better than the final rendered drawing because they are so loose.

thejester - Thanks, sometimes I think I may draw a bit too much. I tend to go through a 100 page sketchbook every 2-4 weeks :\

Unto today's stuff!

BodyWorlds 2 was freaking awesome! I have to come back there again, since this time we had an assignment mostly involving gestures...
There was some really interesting stuff, and no time to draw it all. Here is most of the work, I didnt include some of the really rough crappy gestures, just the decent to good stuff.

http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/nov-45.jpg http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/nov-46.jpg http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/nov-47.jpg http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/nov-48.jpg This next one is a page of sketches of people blocking my view from drawing the above figure. This last one was an experiment I did at home after the show. I did a light, rough selfportrait, then using an anatomy book, a mirror, and by feeling the bones of my face created the bone structure. The parts I feel are most accurate are the jaw, teeth and eye areas.
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/nov-62.jpg

And thats all for today folks! Thanks for looking!

Haha, you're right about the skeleton looking like Calvin! Now I can't stop noticing it. :)

I actually do post almost all of my sketchbook drawings. The only ones I skip are the odd stray doodles that don't represent the work that I do and that I strive for, and have faults that I'm aware of. Basically, its only the really really crappy work that I don't post, since all this work is in my online gallery.

I had a lot of trouble with getting proportions to look right in these studies actually. Partially because I'm not use to drawing these kinds of poses, partially since I needed to do them fairly quickly so I could move on. Didnt have time to touch up details. I plan on going there again sometime this or next month, and doing fewer studies so I can do a better job.
Thanks for constantly coming back to look, comment and critique man, I really really appreciate it. :)

You seem to notice all the problems you need to work on, that's an important skill. What I think you should do is, in any drawing where you notice problems, do another drawing of the same thing and fix those problems. The main issue I'm noticing is proportion, the first division to memorize is between upper body and lower, which is just to split them in half. The pubis is the halfway point. Practice dividing a line in half by eye, and for figures in perspective it's just the familiar dividing a rectangle in half. Also remember hands are about the size of the face.
A drawing that's particularly successful is on Nov. 8, the hand that's inked and pinkish watercolored. Play around with that technique some more.

You surely draw a lot. This is good :).I like those flowers on the first page.
Maybe in some drawings you could push the lights and darks - to avoid drawing the whole picture in half tone.
And I like that you are brave to experiment with different mediums :)

Thanks for all the comments everyone!

Armando - Thanks, I agree that I have trouble with proportion. Especially with legs, I should dedicate some attention specifically to that area. That watercolour hand was interesting to do, I was painting the sepia straight into the pinkish tones. I'll try and play with it more.

arghmisfit - Thanks for the kind words. You should really try and check out the show if you can make it. I'm definitely coming back when I have spare time.

shyamshriram - Thanks a lot man, thats one of my fav self-portraits, too. :p
I noticed I dont do enough nature drawings. I plan to rectify this ASAP.

heartbeat - Thank you. I have been using the HB a bit too much, should probably move up a notch to push the values more. I've partially been experimenting with using lighter, flatter shadows, but I should go back in to stronger value. I'm glad you like the medium experiments, its always fun to just sit down and play around with different ways of making marks on a surface.

Okay, a few more pages for today. Since that fat kid asked for it, I'm going to post everything, including some rougher work. We'll see how that goes. :)

Just some general sketches in art class. We were eating mandarins, I had some fun drawing the skin all coiled up. The figure in the top left is actually a memory exersise. Before class I was watching a person holding up a tape recorder, then attempted to redraw it later from memory.

hey, nice sketches! Sketching from life is really cool, and the construction equipment is my favorite here : )

Well I know sketchbooks are for sketches, but the only crit (or not really a crit, just a wish) is to see more finished stuff, like the horse study. Also try to push the values more, make the darks darker and the lights lighter.
EDIT: or, you can change that by adjusting the brightness/contrast in an image editing program like photoshop.

Cheers, keep posting!

Wow, lotsa replies! Thanks everyone, you're all very encouraging!

That fat Kid - Thanks, those sketches were fun to do. I'm going to be doing a lot more similar work, I feel ive become more confident with doing sketches like that.

Interceptor - If I'm an animal, you're some kind of indescribable beast! Thanks!

Alday.J - Thanks a lot. By sports ones, I assume you mean the ones at the bodyworks show, those were probably my favorite, too.

HEROIC - Hehe, sorry for not telling you, i wasn't planning on because of the weather, but this was a last-minute decision since I had to go to the library to return all my anatomy books :D

bRŰk3n_sPiRiT - Thank you, I do intend on doing more finished work, especially now that I have to get a portfolio prepared. There have been a lot of crits on me needing to do darker value, meaning I DEFINITELY need to get to work on that now. :)

These are sketches I did last night, but didnt get around to scanning:
Self Portrait I tried to do without lifting pen from the page. Messed up proportioons:
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/nov-77.jpg
Value study of a bottle of turpentine. Pushed the darks a little but, but could do it more :\
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/nov-78.jpg
Nude study from photo reference. I think I got the proportions right for once.
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/nov-79.jpg
Watercolour skintone study from reference. Overall, pretty messed up, but the skintones themselves are good.
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/nov-80.jpg
And finally, a chalk pastel self-portrait. I'll try and do a better one later.

Yeah, exactly what I mean... or try to say. My english is "off" sometimes, so forgive me for that kind of imprecision/mistake. Well there's a lot of new stuff, you're an animal, Interceptor is right on that point. I really need to do more studies like you did. You blow my eyes with your stuff ! Farvus - Thanks, I enjoyed drawing the construction equipment. Gonna go back to the site the next warm day and try to do longer/closer studies.

Alday.J - Thanks a lot for the compliments!

Heartbeat - Thank you, I've been trying to improve my line quality lately, I still think its too messy with too many useless lines.

when i look from beginning to the present, id say that this sketchbook has undergone quite an evolution. your style has only gotten better, as has your skill. its something to be admired, the way you work, as it seems your commitment to drawing is absolute. with out question. i enjoy you graphites and some of the inks, but the colored peices are really something. youll only become greater with every finished page. dont stop the work.

Thank you everyone, your encouragement pushes me to work more dilingently. In the past few weeks I've found myself having lots of fun drawing constantly. I use to have to make myself sit down and sketch, but now I just sit down and sketch without hesitation.

armando - Haha, my brother thought the same thing! :bashful: The asian guy is actually from a hi-res photo I found on 3d.sk. I liked the values and decided to draw him, but I guess he turned out looking really young. :)

legacy - Thanks for the compliment, will do.

Alday.J - Thank you! I've recently been working to improve on whole figure work, instead of constantly focusing on the head and hands, right now I'm keeping busy mainly with torsoes.

That fat kid - Thanks, I've really become immersed in just sitting around and drawing whenever I get the chance. The best way to learn is to make drawing fun!

Azeira - Thanks a lot for the compliments! I'm glad you like the coloured work, its an area where I still have trouble, mainly because I don't do it enough.

Yeah, I got the same problem. I focus too much on faces. Nice set of pic here, I dig the first one a lot, very energic and I like the way you put "quickly" your colors. Sober, expressive and efficient. Hope to see some more in that way from time to time !

hey sock, don't sweat it if you don't fully render a picture, according to mentler it takes about 15 thousand drawings to get to it, so just draw all the time and you'll end up being even better....you got a lot of confidence in your lines, and your 'touch' at drawing is getting better....

People like to live one moment at a time, but you, sir, like to live one huge dump at a time. I really enjoy the loose line work; cool how you lay down loosies, and then tie them up for a nice, technical render. And if I may add one crit, althought it might be too late, the last figure sketch you have, [the 15 mins one], the guy's head seems a little bit too big. But it may be just me. Either way, this thread shows me how much work I should be doing. Cheers!

Alday J - Thank you! Hope you've had a fun journey :)

Zord - Haha, thanks, "living one huge dump at a time", I like that. :)
And yeah, you're right, the head is waay too big. I originally wanted to just focus on the head, so I had no gesture layed out for the proportions :\

hamb6960 - Thank you!

armando - Thanks! I didn't feel like I was rushing the sketches, its just a different method, trying to get as much information down about the pose with fewer strokes. The reason why the one-minute ones are probably more porportionate is since I didnt focus on a single area to render, but rather the pose as a whole, I'm still learning on applying this to lnoger studies.

HEROIC - heeey man! Life drawing was real fun, can't wait to go again tomorrow. You did some sweet work, too, now go UPLOAD it :D

legacy - Thanks, the open life drawing session I went to is at a local art school, try calling up some schools/colleges and see if they have similar things organized, most art schools should.

Alday J. - Thanks, I'm still not done with the PS stuff, I'll post it when I do some more work on it. National portfolio day is a day when students go down to art colleges to have their work critiqued by professors and see if it is fitting for the program they're applying for.

Highlight of today was going back to the open life drawing session, did some work Im happy with! National portfolio day at OCAD was OK, didn't really learn anything I didn't know before. It was funny/sad to see just how many students put anime-style work into their portfolio (sheridan strictly states they dont want any anime work in student portfolios), they were all whining when the professors told them that work is not accepted... :)

Anyway, unto today's work, I only did the open life drawing stuff and a page while waiting in line at OCAD, been doing homework the rest of the day :\

Some 1 minute studies, I tried to focus more on volume this time around. It was interesting to do, the model was very "classically" built.

i just noticed how u simplifies some parts in ur drawings, like hands, hair, feet, and i think its because u cant get that kindda body in home, and photos, ur capturing that , putting ur time on that, and that is really great, i rmbr on some of my quick drawing, i did focus on hands alot, which is a lil bad, cause i missed the pose.

I like how you use those loose lines in your sketches. Your effort and progress is amazing and inspiring. Maybe you have some trouble with proportions, I do as well. I got "Anatomy for the artist" by Sarah Simblet, but I havent had time to use it yet. (I saw one of the pics from the book).

hey sock, i'm jealous, i never got to do any nudes from life when I was 17...good work on them, you've improved a lot....you're drawings have a lot of energy in them, giving them vitality and movement...some of the proportions look a bit wonky, but that doesn't detract from a good drawing if they aren't absurdly weird...the old masters didn't even get anatomy right all the time.....as for volume when time is short, you seem to be able to do that fairly efficiently already, look at those 5 minute drawings....or the 1 minute ones...don't forget that line variation can indicate volume, depth, and mass too....great stuff, keep it up!!

Sir! Really, really great thread! I love your more gestural pencil drawings the most. Especially some foe earlier stuff on page 2. You're really comin' into your own! And you can tell, like my stuff, when you spend more time and actually draw and drawing well and than there's the rushed stuff. I have a similar problem. I feel like I'm just hacking and sqiping at the page at times, y'know? But seriously, bro... these are really beautiful. I've got my eye on this thread!

As for figure tips... you don't have to render everything for it to be a great drawing... sometimes you can just create focal points or just render the parts that are closer to the viewer, etc. As far as rendering tho, try to wrap your hatches and strokes around the figure/form. Sculpt the drawing on paper. Like you're brushing your hand along the surface of the form... lay your line strokes down like that. Hope that helps... always note that high light, core shadow, reflected light, and cast shadow as well. Just like those spheres that simply shows how value flows, remembe rthat light works that way on all forms.

Great thread, bro. I'm really glad I made my way in!!

Couldn't see much more than the first dozen or so, being on a dialup.. ..nad then the last dozen or so in the reply page :)

Nice stuff, sure the material is uneven but whose isn't.. when you relax, you have a very expressful style, I reaslly like that ballpointpen sketch.

Also, you show GREAT improvement on the lifedrawings, those last are top notch. Makes me want to take up a class again.

hi greensock :)

firstly, thanks for checking out my sketchbook, yes it was the fencing guy :) glad that you recognised him. (I saw that you had drawn him also :) )

I really like your stuff, you draw lots of people. really a lot, and I really like them but wouldn't it be fun to draw a landscape for once, I think it would look amazing :) :D

Whoa man. You must go the toilet with your sketchbook. How do you find the time to do all this. Great stuff though. No reducing on the quality even though drawn fast. You have certainly progressed a lot since you've started this thread. Keep practicing as much an you'll be reaching the moon by the same time next year. See you again soon.

Ok so I said updates will be weird, but didnt mean for them to stop. :)
First term of school is over, finished all current projects, so I can get back into scanning my work every day.
Ive still been drawing, a bit too much maybe, but its become a habit now and I can't stop :p.
Lots of replies! Thank you everyone!

Main Loop - Thanks a lot! I'll work on my pen work, tighten more!

HEROIC - heeey man! Glad you like the studies. I tend to simplify a lot of areas in my life drawings to save time, i worry more about getting the form in rather than minute details.

PetePARKER - Hey Pete! Sorry if my age bugs you, I'll try and work on that. :p OC was goddamn fun, gotta do it more often!

BAKI - Thanks for the kind words!

jtheanswer - Thanks, Anatomy for the Artist is a great book, I would put it to even more use but I have to keep taking it out from the library, cant find a local store that sells it :\

spacemanchris - Thank you! I love doing the 5 minute ones, theyre probably my favorite, too. Glad you like my faces, now I gotta move on to the rest of the figure :)

That fat kid - Hey fat kid! Thanks for the kind words! I'm still practising figuring out proportion in drawing, i think im getting better, except for the goddamned legs, gotta study more! You're right about line variation, i gotta pay more attention to that!

armando - Thanks, hehe. The word groupings was just me trying to figure out an acronym for my site name when a friend asked me what it meant. :)

ZebzFree - Thanks for looking at my sb! Really like your stuff. I'll keep your figure tips in mind next life drawing session! Thanks!

2ma2 - Sorry if I killed your dialup, I try to compress my pics as much as possible, but I guess they tend to add up. :p GLad you like my work, life drawing is really fun!

Profil - Heh, dont worry about it. I'll try to work on my line quality!

Haldor - Thanks, I really really want to draw landscape, but that requires going out of the city or into one of the bigger parks, both of which i have no intention of doing in this cold :p. Landscape will have to wait until spring. However I wanna do some perspective, architecture and interior stuff here in the city, too. Do urban landscapes count? :)

Placeboast - haha, i think the toilet is like the one and only place where I dont carry my sketchbook! Thanks for the compliments!

Aah! Huge dump of work from the last week! My site's bandwith is dying, so Im gonna have to revert to removing some of the really horrible work to save bandwith. Out of this batch, I scanned a bit over 60, and tossed about 9-10 which were crap.

Ok here goes, probably gonna have to upload in two dumps :o
Everything here is either life or imagination!

Self Portrait done in OC. Was fun to experiment a while. If anyone is interested in the .wpe, send me an email, or pm or whatever and I'll send it to you (its like 800KB)

Oh wow! 4 Stars! Thanks everyone!

Alday J - Thanks, when I went to the toronto subway sketchgroup, all the artists were using ballpoint, so now I've been playing with it a lot, its quite fun. Glad you like the CK piece, I'll send it to you as soon as I get a hi-res scan of it (so either tonight or tomorrow!)

B-Man - Thanks for the compliments and the rating!

That fat kid - Thanks! I've been paying more attention to proportions in the past few days, so hopefully i'll get the hang of it soon. :)

Busy day today, did a whole lot of drawing. Been really playing around with ballpoint pen. Heres the stuff from yesterday and today:

very nice update, your figures are still looking good :) and yes, ofcourse do urban landscapes count, I think that a landscape drawings is just a drawing who doesn't focus on animals and humans and that sort of stuff, but that focus on the mood which is set outdoor :) capture that, (which you already do in your figures, really liking them a lot) and you'll be awesome :)

oh yeah, I really like your selfportrait a lot :)

More experimentation! Tried doing a self portrait while drawing with both my left hand and my right hand at the same time! Blue lines are left hand, red are right hand. Drawing with two hands at the same time was freaking hard, I spent most time keeping track of my left hand, so most of the stuff with the right hand is blind contour.

And lastly some random sketching!

The proportions on #139 are a lot better than #135, but in only 3 days I don't know how much can be retained, so just keep working at that. Are you using any specific method for the subway sketches, I'm always impressed with those.

SirGreenSock
December 5th, 2005, 09:45 PM
Armando - Thanks, we'll wait and see how the proportions are retained in later studies. I'm glad you like the subway sketches, they are always the most fun to do. I don't really do anything special, just go right into sketching with ballpoint pen, but do it faster than I would normally, my pen rarely leaves the paper until the sketch is done.

Work for today, 2 PS sketches, library sketch and some hand sketches.

Here are the PS sketches. I was experimenting with using only sharp edged brushes at 100% opacity.

Odds - Thanks, more finished works on the way as I get more time to work.

That fat kid - Thanks, as you can probably tell by now, I do quite a few self-portraits. Its a good way to gauge improvement and experiment with new techniques on familiar subject matter

Alday.J - Glad you like em! This self-portrait was different for me, I was focusing more on tehnique than feeling on it, was going for a poster-type look. My brother says that he sees a sad or tired gaze in my eyes though so there might be more to it. It was very different from my usual studies, mostly because I still haven't gotten used to digital painting, so it always feels different, in a good way. Cheers!

mentler - Thanks a lot for the kind words!

jtheanswer - Thanks! I looked at Amazon, they have the books I want, should probably order it there.

Zord - Thanks, ketchup is indeed delicious! As for your question, I am almost definitely going to the workshop if it is in Montreal! I'd be willing to cut cash from my college savings just for this opportunity!

More work today, most of which Im not too happy with, except for 2 or 3 of them.

Bro, you're working entirely too hard. ;) Just kidding. This is great. You make me feel so lazy everytime I enter this freakin' thread. You're really pushing yourself and I admire that. I was going to say, watch your proportion and anatomy but it seems to me that you're doing a pretty good job of that lately. Just continue keeping your eye on those sort of problems and you'll do well. The lines are comin' along well too. Especially those little doodles of people you're lookin' doin' form quick glances and stuff. I really like those. Remember the forms tho. It might help your SP's if you did a planar study of your face (AKA Bridgman has plane studies). It helped me quite a bit. Keep it up, man!! Lookin' really great. You really are experimenting in tons of mediums too!! Nice, nice, nice!!

Im here and Im alive, just been too busy with drawing and school to scan stuff...
Now I have over 100 pages to scan. I will have an update right after Christmas, now that I have the time to do all this scanning!
Thanks for asking/worrying though :) Dont worry, Ive been drawing and painting daily, possibly even a bit more than before >:)

ZebzFree - Thanks a lot! Ive been practicing everything all over the place lately, there are too many things for me to do! Im gonna focus down on line and form now, look at some Loomis planes and stuff, thanks!

Alday.J - Thanks! I will be producing a lot more, got a better computer now that can actually stand using PS, so I have no excuse for not working anymore!

Flaskpost - Thanks dude, I feel the same way!

Good news, searched my HD and found some stuff I havent posted yet .:)
These are all recent, some of them are unfinished, but thats better than just posting with no update, eh?
So heres a small preview before I get to scanning the other stuff:

Pencil illustration of the slaying of the minotaur done for a friend:
http://www.odicart.com/gallery/albums/userpics/dec-42.jpg

These next few are the ones I scanned from a series of 11 illustrations from Macbeth done for school. These are finished pencils, but I still plan on working on top of the pencils in PS to polish them up. Some are pretty messy at this stage but you get the idea.

greensock!
an impressive amount of improvement from start to present; i must concur with everyone else! I love the momentum--keep up the great work.
probably my favorite thing here is the pages filled with all the gorgeous, tiny clean studies of faces and miscellany! great work!

this sp is particularly impressive as well:

hey sock, well, I wasn't too worried about you, just your drawings and sketches, those need to be around for years...your watercolors are awesome, I always forget that your 17, blows my mind...you oughta start reading up on art schools you want to go to, you're definitely good enough to land some good scholarships if you keep improving at this rate...I really love that still life of what appears to be valve oil for instruments....anyhow, even if it isn't regular, keep it updated!

guggenmaneuver - Thanks for the kind words. Those pages of faces are always fun to do, good practice. Glad you like that sp, one of my favorites, too.

That fat kid - hehe, thanks. I try to update regularly, the only thing stopping me is that scanning takes time I might not have. Now that I have a better computer I should be cranking out more digital stuff too=less scanning=more updates?
That watercolour still-life is the one I found to be the most successful in the series. Its actually of inkjet printer refill bottles from my old printer. I like to occasionally try and paint with that ink, has a very weird behavior.
Art school-wise I doubt I can go outside of Toronto, so I'm focusing on getting into Sheridan for the illustration program.

Flaskpost - Thanks a lot! I'm gonna have to keep working with the watercolours, the medium is almost as fun as drawing. :)

Some stuff from today. Trying to get back into sketching digitally.

Hi, man ! Good stufff with the digis ! I think that your screen set-up is fine... But you're the best judge ! Compare your traditionals to your screen, it will probably give you a good idea (but it's tricky, be carefull with that). For me it's okay. Anyway, I like the shoes studie (amazing !) and the first portrait -maybe add some clearer values on it, don't sure.
Keep posting the good stuff, SirGreenSock (and alternate digis and tradis !).
Cheers !
Julien.

SirGreenSock
December 29th, 2005, 06:07 PM
That fat kid - Thanks. Don't worry, traditionals will never be replaced for me. This just means I'll be able to do regular updates with digi stuff and just put up the traditional work in batches when I get time to scan.

Alday.J - Hey man! Thanks, good to hear the pics look alright. I was worried about the gamma on my laptop, spent a long time yesterday calibrating it.
The shoe study was really fun to do, the technique is simple but rewarding! By first self-portrait I think you mean the watercolour one in the previous update, right? That one was tricky, it was on glossy paper so the watercolour did not absorb and puddled on the surface. Made blending difficult to do, I'm gonna try and play with the technique more, thanks!

Just finished this, still playing around digitally, experimenting in OC. I've decided that as of January 1st, Im gonna start doing self-portraits on a daily basis, should prove to be a good learning experience.

Green Sock man, your updates are making me jealous! Wish I could update, more right now than ever. And as Fat Kid, it amazes me you're only 17. I just can't believe it. That fat kid - Really? I inspired someone? Wow.
The picture was an experiment with a technique, I like it, gonna be chugging out more oc work like that soon. Daily sp's are gonna be fun, definitely gonna have to stick to that routine.

sabe2003 - No need to feel lazy man, your work is damn good. Everyone essentially draws in their spare time and i just happen to have a lot of it :)

Grom - Thanks for the kind words

Zord - Hey Zord, havent seen you in a while, hope you'll be able to update soon, missing your stuff. Personally, I don't think an artist's age matters, what matters is once you start taking your work seriously and becoming intent on improving. Whether you're 5 or 50 really doesnt make much of a difference (although a 5 yearold doing serious drawing would be damned impressive :P)

Heres a mini update, just a sketch of my brother done in OC. I have a couple of sketchbook pages, too. I'll scan them tonight since I intend on doing more sketching anyway. :)

Miau -Thanks for the kind words

WARHEAD - Thanks. Anatomy studies coming up!

Farvus - Thanks

Tullie - Thank you, the train studies are always fun. Definitely do some if you get the chance.

Profil - Thanks. I've decided to post up all my recent and future .wpe's on my site for download. Here: http://www.odicart.com/wpe/
Recent self portraits dont use any construction lines. I usually do a light gesture/contour before going in further. If Im painting, I also sketch in the light and shadow shapes before detailing. You can see some of these steps in my oc .wpe's
School is not much of a problem for me drawing-wise, I do as much drawing at school (usually of classmates:) ) as outside. I try and push myself to a bare bone minimum of 2-6 hours of sketching per day, including traditional and digital. Recently I've decided to try and push this farther, artists like Lungbug worked for 10-12 hours a day even during school!

Finally, work I've done today. I've completely neglected my sketchbook since I got my laptop, decided to make it up by doing more work today.

I forgot you were in the SSG # 3 :nohope: In general I think maybe you should try to develop a solid understructure in most of the drawings before laying in the final lines, just my opinion. It helps to sketch in geometric forms for the larger masses too. I'll add that studying classical drawing methods helps tremendously alongside more spontaneous stuff. The watercolors are great, btw.

That fat kid - Thanks, good to know there is a resemblance. I am 99% sure I am going to the Montreal workshop, I'm in Toronto so its damn close to me. Im still saving up money and there is no way I will allow my self to miss this one!
Thanks for the compliment on the pencils. Comparing me to wes is flattering but definitely over-reaching to anything I can do. He is one of my influences, maybe that shows up :)

auto_matt - Thanks, digital ones are probably best since I can tweak them as much as I want.

Dan1989 - Dont worry about it man :) Thanks for the critiques though, very helpful. I agree that Ive completely neglected the more technical side of drawing, I will begin to force myself to do at least one page of those types of studies on top of regular work, build it into my habit.

sydni - Thanks a lot, I've really been trying to improve my linework rather than hiding bad lines with rendering :)

Bad drawing day for me... Had a headache and wasnt really in the mood to work. Only thing worth showing was this quickie self portrait in Painter.

Arghmisfit - Hey, thanks dude! Sure, i should do more stuff like the zombies. I have so many different things I wanna study and draw that I keep getting sidetracked. :) The board game sketch itself isnt for the sheridan folio, it was practice for it. Trying to get better at doing those kinds of fast sketches from life.

Steinmetz - Hehe, yeah I do. I find them to be a fun and rewarding. Its always good to practice and experiment with familiar subject matter. Glad you like the figure studies, I've been trying to improve my treatment of volume.

Alday J - Cheers dude! Glad you like the sp's. They are an interesting exercise. Personally, I can't wait to see where this exercise takes me.

color studies are lookin great. . .the only crit I have is the same one Jon gave me - to really really really really study those transitional edges where light 'turns' around the form into shadow. . .particularly the degree of hardness or softness and the 'suddeness' or degree of value shift. It's these things that will really make a quick sketch pop. . .hehe I think so anyway, I don't have it yet. Anyway keep rockin it man!

Very nice work here, Green (though the half-shave freaks me out). It seems like you tend toward small feet on a lot of your works, but overall, a really nice body of work.

Happy Birthday!

That fat kid - What? Profil blabbed? Gotta get that bastard! http://www.odicart.com/shakesfist.gif :P The silly sp was fun, but soo messy, hehe. This next update is all for you man!

Dan1989 - Thanks, Im happy with the way the sps are going. We'll see where they go from here :)

Pixeldragoon - Try some digi sp's, theyre good practice without worrying about the medium, just painting freely. If you wanna see how I do some of these, I have all the .wpe opencanvas files hosted online http://www.odicart.com/wpe/
if youre interested.
Todays SP is coming tonight, here are some traditionals for now, life drawings done last night. School started today, got a bunch of projects all due soon. I'll have less time to work and scan, sp's should still be daily, but I dont think I'll be scanning traditional work more than once a week.
Anyway, unto the work. Started out pretty messy, was rusty with my life drawings.

Some of the features (nose in particular) looks misaligned in the last one, but I guess that's understandable since you said you focused on color. All the life drawings look great, I like the subway ones the best. :hatsoff:

Really nice stuff man, your life drawings are really cool. Love the renderig on your more detailed life drawings.

Youve got some great anatomy stuff etc. Would be really cool to see how this transfers to non ref work or more concepty stuff :teeth: :teeth: (ive got a fetish for stuff like that )

Good job tho man, real good stuff keep it up.

SirGreenSock
January 11th, 2006, 12:26 AM
Dan1989 - Thanks, youre right about the features. It may be understandable, but not forgivable. I should be able to do these properly, whether Im focusing on proportion or colour or whatever.

Zord - Thanks man, hope you'll be back into scanning soon!

PHATandy - Thanks for the kind words. Concepty stuff will have to wait until this week is over, way too much school work at the moment. I'll see if I can whip up some good stuff by the beginning of next week.

Todays self portrait. I didnt spend any time on this one, I have a lot of work tomorrow and need to get rest. I guess when school is in question, the quality of these will deviate depending on how much time I have. But hey, doing one every single day is good practice, even when they dont turn out.

I just wanted to give big ups on the daily SP's. It's totally understandable given the time constraint, and your SP's have given me inspiration to do dailies myself. And even if certain ones aren't as good as others, they give you that fine touch into the finger's memory.. or something like that. It's like sharpening a knife until it's a Hatori Hanzo. Yea, similes and metaphors are where it's at. :)

sir green sock green sir!
http://www.projectsole.ca/gallery/albums/userpics/dec-152.jpg -- you say that this is an expiremental rendering style? looks really, really great to be rendered in pencil. on http://www.projectsole.ca/gallery/albums/userpics/dec-185.jpg the guy in the background is a little bit out of scale (lol)... just kidding ... the stuff from this last figure session is looking pretty good...i like all the one minute ones--looks like she was doing some nice improvisational poses. if pressed into a corner and forced to critique with the threat of blunt head trauma, i'd probably shriek that http://www.projectsole.ca/gallery/albums/userpics/dec-188.jpg 's support chair or stool, whatever it is. doesn't seem to work somehow...like it should extend farther to under her butt a little.
great Self portraits by the way. seems like you are learning a lot about color!

Thanks guys!
Zord - Thanks, hope to see some of your dailies, too. This activity seems to be addictive eh? GOnna have to spread it throughout ca! I know what you mean about sharpening and stuff, even if they individually might not be as good as others, its still good practice.
guggenmaneuver - Thanks! That first one was experimental since I never tried combining crosshatching with smudging before, it really helps with using various types of edges. Glad you like the figure work, the one minute ones are always the most fun and rewarding to do. THis model was interesting to draw, too. I agree on the stool crit, Im not sure, but I think her butt may have actually been off the edge, in which case the error is with the weight distribution, either way, something is off. Thanks!
Todays self portrait was also done for school, art class is doing a semi-conceptual project involving wrapping. THis particular exercise was to take any body part (no, youre not a pervert, that was my first though, too) and wrap it in a material, then draw it. I chose to wrap my face in cling wrap, and do it in Photoshop, since I finished my current sketchbook and dont have a new one yet :D
Im actually quite happy with this one, despite the looseness. How does the cling wrap look? It was difficult to work on two layers, looking at the skin, while doing the plastic on top.

Thanks Justin!

Todays self portrait was another good experiment with mediocre results. Experimented with using Turner's palette from 1799. Interesting to try, messed up a whole lot of areas of the face though :\
Gonna try more colour experiments like this in the future though.

wow that's really freaking scary looking... might be good to use in some fantastic character or monster concept. the texture that you've rendered seems totally implausible, but in the way that it works it's amazing. I could tell who AND what was going on without having to read the description. very nice; but VERY disturbing. is this something you actually did? wow. the life-threatening dedication is impressive!

Oh dang...this new "turner's 1799 palette" self portrait is REALLY nice, although like you mentioned there are some anatomy issues. One of the very best of your self portraits in terms of color scheme and light...you should consider doing another in this style. I think if you spent just a LITTLe more time on it it would look fantastic!

oh and i'm sending you more ref photos. this time, abandoned places (700+!)

That fat kid - Thanks! I do fully intend on doing tightened up sustained self portraits, but at the moment I do these after other work and before sleep, so long studies will only happen when I have a lot more spare time!

Janus & Fut - Thanks a lot!

guggenmaneuver - Hey man! Thanks, cant wait to get the new pic set! hehe glad you like that sp. I actually did wrap cellophane around my face and painted it from life, so I had it on for almost an hour! Dont worry though, i managed to cut breathing holes before I asphyxiated myself. :D
The Turner pallette one was almost strictly a focus on studying how turner used his pallette and composition, although I agree there are a lot of areas to improve. I am gonna do way more of this style as I go on, there are a lot of artists, both old masters and contemporary, whose palettes I wanna study and try out.

Big time update for tonight, and hopefully there will be another huge one by Sunday!

Alday.J - Thanks! Yeah, I feel very comfortable with my wacom, not as much as with a pencil, but definitely more than with a brush. :)

PHATandy - Thanks, good luck with your life drawing! Cant wait to see what you come up with!

spacemanchris - Thanks, the vine charcoal just seemed to cooperate on that self portrait. Its also the most technical of the recent ones i think.

Sorry for no update yesterday, was pretty sick, hardly even managed to do that day's self portrait.

Hello sir greensock! That last self portrait you did looks really good. I tried doing a self portraight, but it gave me a headache.
The subway sketches are really inspirational. I did some drawing from life when I went to london recently and realised how fun it was, but Im scared to draw people - partly cos I know I will mess it up haha. Only drawing will improve that.
Some of your life drawings look a little off. I don't know if you do this already, look at the negative spaces more, it might help to improve the placement of arms and legs.

Nice job man, just one quick question, how do you get the proportions right on your 5 or 10 min sketches? And do you clean the rough lines when you have the final lines?

Thx!
