THE BOOK OF FIVE RINGS is currently seeking concept artists, illustrators, and Photoshop gurus that are interested in collaborating.
what is it-
This is a re-telling of the life of Japan's greatest samurai...Musashi. In the 16th Century he committed all of his knowledge into one book...THE BOOK OF FIVE RINGS. From ancient history, to bleak future, the life of Musashi has grown into mythic legend. Can you contribute to his journey?
Currently in pre-production and searching for additional investors, a script is finished and is being produced into concept sketches, color studies, and character designs. A CG trailer is produced, but needs supplemental 2d artwork to bolster the pitch. The 2D art will drive the 3d. As such, sketches, costume designs, environments, and color studies will all help contribute to the final product. High quality Matte paintings may even be used IN the final renders.

The Book of Five Rings is created by a CG VFX Supervisor who has worked on some of hollywood's biggest VFX blockbusters...Matrix Revolutions, Mission Impossible, and currently Aeon Flux. Stressing collaboration, teamwork and longer production cycles, 5 RINGS looks to reshape the model by which Hollywood makes CG movies. Since the creator has "been in the trenches" of the VFX world, many of the pitfalls common to production will be avoided through careful pre-production and planning.
whats in it for me?
Currently posting on the non-paying boards to gauge initial feedback, as funding increases, so will the royalties, and contract jobs. This is an INDEPENDENT project. I stress that this is a collaboration, the template and outline is there, what each artist brings to the table only adds to the final project. Works will be credited to the artists, but as to not leak the movie prematurely, a simple NDA will be asked for on a case by case basis( ie Moneyshots). This is a great chance to bolster a demo reel, hone existing skills, or break free of the VFX studio rut that comes from a lack of original ideas.
THE BOOK OF FIVE RINGS is unique in concept. CG is more than talking animals, more than family fare, and has limitless potential from an artistic standpoint. If it can be thought of, it can be created.
SPECIFICS-
to start: need perhaps 5 illustrations/storyboards to convey an idea or shot in the film. These are key moments and as such need to be fleshed out in 2d before modeling and environments are constructed.I would like to work with the artist to get these concepts out of the written word, into 2D line drawings. Eventually these will be basis for color and lighting design.
Also need character design work. existing designs may be considered, provdidng there are no usage conflicts. interested in traditional japanese era character designs, as well as futuristic designs. Very open to suggestions at this stage of the process. Keep in mind, these will be used to base CG models on.
and last but not least, there are currently 2 heavy ton machines , one construction...one military. Only thing locked down is that the construction mecha is bipedal. both are very large in scale. Would like to see initial sketches of these before detail work is started, as this is the most volatile of the films sequences (ie, most likely to be changed based on production scale/time/budget)
I can provide initial sketches/ideas/sequences to interested people. This is an ongoing project, that continues to grow every month. Any contribution, no matter how small, will be appreciated and credited.
