Not just a new game, but a new way of making games?

The game sounds wicked. It'll be interesting to see how this turns out, and what impact, if any, it'll have on game development.

wow, this sounds cool. I've always been fascinated by how evolution works,so i could imagine it being terribly interesting. building an alien civilisation...hmm...one thing that bugs me though is that this sounds like it's gonna be all-online. or how else does he want to do that with enemy organisms and cultures controlled by other players? if it is this way,i'd spend far too much money on internet play as this sounds extremely interesting and fun... :perv:

Nice to see a big developer pick up on (old) ideas like these and the whole procedural dilly that was more or less abandonded 15 years ago (by game devs that is).
Edit: Noctis might be interesting if you're into procedural storyless 'games'. It's a space exploration... thing, and there's a community making starmaps, naming planets and stuff.

The GDC is always great, because you get to see many creative developers doing what they love and really trying to offer developed ideas for the cause of creativity..
But it's always sad, 2 years later when you hear about Publishers slashing their ideas and experements and forcing them to work on yet another franchise/sequel game.

Haha, that's great..I had an idea for a game quite along these lines some time ago. I'm glad someone else with the wherewithall to realize it also had the idea. :D

fukifino, yea people have always dreamed up this concept -- and with how good draw-distance has gotten, I've seen a lot of people try and develop a game with this very idea behind it, lets see how Will Wright develops it into a full game for us to enjoy.
here's a buncha screens, I wish i was there to see it.

What makes me more sad is that the industry doesn't knows much about the Demo Scene. It was there a looooooooong time ago and seems to be dwarfed and forgotten in this day and age. But it's where the best programmers come from imo.
I had the pleasure to work with one of these ninjas and the guy was AWESOME. Heck, he even wrote his own video compression algorythm (which saved Majesco's sorry ass from bankrupcy in the end).
GDC is a great place to see that "we" are not alone. That despite the endless liscences and sequels, some production people still remember their roots. That execs didn't quite brainwash everyone into being a tool.
We seriously have to be careful tho as it seems the amount of Juniors is tipping the balance. Educate the masses !

This is very similar to what Miyamoto originally had in mind for Pikmin. In an interview he described a vision of a sort of "life game" in which you controlled two very basic organisms.
