hmmmm FIRST ! bwahahahaha j/k
Well lets see...hmmmm well you seem to understand something about muscles but the overall figures are a bit out of shape...proportionaly-wise...
you might work on this.
I like the Monster Tempel-Guardian.
Interesting Face. But technicaly your first one is your best.
Maybe get a bit darker with your values or use a wider range of them...
keep this updated so we can see you improve ;)

Here's a drawing of my english teacher.
She's kinda big and I figured that such a big body had to have a function then to bore the pupils.
Maybe she's just waitning for us to fall a sleep on her boring lessons.
Just so that she'll have the chance to grab us with one of her tentacles... she's must be hidding those tentacles some where, maybe she camoflage it as fat... :bashful:

Hey pencilator looks like your not lacken on the creativity ethier haha ha you got loads of great stuff here. Those anatomy studies are excellent keep doing those they've helped me alot and as far as the imaginitive stuff goes just keep rockn them and applying what you learn with your studies (which it looks like your doing, it shows in your last creature there) and they are going to kick arse.
btw thanks for the visit to my sb, now it is I who will be keeping an eye on you :^^:

Returning the favor: To many pics to crit all or a single one. General observations; The anatomy studies look great, do some with foreshortening for extra challenge. The concepts are certainly innovative. what they lack is a sense of form. They look more flat than the anatomy studies. Perhaps try to add shadow to them? (look who's talkin.. :x ) Use strong sunglasses to protect against english teachers hypno-gaze.

As you can see i'm trying to work more on the shadow's, it's great to really complet drawings for once :)

FL0: Ey! Thank's for the comment, made me feel proud of myself :D

I believe foreshortening is a fancy way of describing how perspective affects something, body parts mainly:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v685/carnalizer/fs.jpg
This is tricky business (had to do the top arm three times..) but essential to creating dynamic poses. To clarify about the shadows; your sculptural light is pretty good. I was talking about cast shadows, the kind that "falls onto" something. Like on the small teddybear sketch. It creates depth without being very complex. If I'm not making sense we'll do this in swedish later ;)

carnalizer: Thanks, it you made it a whole lot clearer.
The worste thing is that you got a point there :^^;:
It was very nice of you to make a drawing for this.
I'm very happy for that crit. I'll try to work on it.
Hey carnalizer, this one is for you.
I've been thinking on your robot designs all day (almost). So I just had to draw one myself. Hope you like it mate ;)
PS. I think I lost focus some where In the middle of the drawing :S
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v700/Pencilator/Robbierobot.jpg
Here is today's anatomy study, I think I should try to draw on my proportions instead, I've done maybe to many arm study's for now (if one can work to much on anatomy :nohope: )

Nice robot! I like the way it looks like some organic humanoid with armor fused onto him. look at machinery or other robots to get inspiration for details. Details make them look larger generally. Feels like your robot wants so bad to be a mean, big killing machine but the artist drew him from a birds eye view so it looks like a toy on the floor instead. ;-)
The exhaust/vent on the leg is a nice touch. The feet are not drawn in the same perspective as the rest. Start with some perspective lines to make it easier.

March 24th, 2005, 03:13 AM
Thanks carnalizer, you pionted out all the things that I was aware of (and some new) but I didn't want to see :\
I'm having a hard time to get away from the organic feeling, cuz if you look at my stuff you won't find any robotic/industrial drawings.
I knew it was something about the feets, but I didn't see what it was :er:

Hej Tigermjölk.
Nice of you to take a look at my sketchbook.
I'm trying to keep the anatomy studies up, for the studies I mostly use George B. Bridgman's books, these are great. And for more muscle and bone studies I use The Human Figure by David K. Rubins.
Hope that made you any smarter.
And I can recommend Mentler's Anatomy thread here on CA to. He's great. :D

Funny how your inked stuff looks very direct and pushed in contrast to the pencils where the lines are rather nervous and uncertain. With me it's the other way around.
The inked stuff feels alot like tattoo motifs to me. Perhaps you should try to simplify the shading though. Larger areas of black and less texture. That lizard thing rocks btw!

Well, the outcome of a cold might be good sometimes =) this one is really cool, I like the overall anatomy, and especially the arms, the only thing thats seams off is the shoulder, but thats maybe because he have a armour of some kind? or is he little bit of a reptilian humanoid? anyway, even thought the anatomy is of on some places it still fits in in the whole picture in a really good way =) so its all good in the end anyway! :D

Wow! some real cool stuffs youve been busy makin, i like the shading on the bride, is it a ref. piece?
I really dig your abstract stuff to, a tip is to dig into some muscular anatomy, as i said before im working really hard on that part right now, and you really get alot of aha's and ohh's on the way hehe, im working with a really great book right now, and the funny thing is that it is'nt a art anatomy book but a workout book hehe, but it has some of the most detaild muscular illustrations that i have ever seen so its really good, and as it's a workout book you can be sure that everything is placed and showed in the right place.
The book is anyhow titled (in swedish) "Styrketräning - En Anatomisk Guide" or in its original language (for the ones that doesent live in sweden ;)
"Guide des Mouvements de Musculation" (French)
In sweden its pretty cheep, 129 kr or something like that so its well worth the cash.
Anyway, great work with them sketches, i'll keep watching =)

I'll have to look up that book, I need the studies :( Really do.
I hope you can make it to Sthlm. The more the merrier.
I'll have to travel to sthlm one the friday.
I'll ask on the scandinavian thread how ppl will get there so we can meet up :D

Aja, bara några förslag.
Keep on rocking!

Now for some comments, I really like the arms on the fishy creature, they really rocks, but his hips seams a little bit of, this could be cause hes a alien that dont have the same anatomy as humans but then the legs have different lengths to so that makes the lower part of the body look off, otherwise its a great design, and i really hope that pigelin tasted real nice ;)
And the other one, the head seams a little bit small, and again the hips are a bit of, otherwise its a great design, nice bio-mech stuff =)
Heres a little hip tut that i did, maybe it helps maybe i dont, i post it as a url so that i dont mess up your great sb! Keep em comin!

Recent post are very nice ~~~ try to think more about the journeys your line takes ~ where you want it to start and where you want it to end ~ it is much like any other trip <> you have to know where you are starting from and where you want to go <> if not you will get lost <> so talk to yourself if you need to and talk yourself over the surface and in and out of your drawings and let your line reflect your thoughts <> what is it going over around and through <> is it coming toward you or going away <> line is a convention to describe form and topographical information <> enjoy the journey!

hey
the lifedrawing looks good you're most certain to continue to improve quickly while doing this... looks like you used another approach in the last drawing... I took some lifedrawing classes last fall and the teacher always told us to start with a quick little stickfigure of the model in one of the corners.... since you then have made an anlysis of the entire model (all the angles and such)...She was also trying to get us to sight in the beginning of the drawing to get some initial landmarks or else the more complicated poses would be very difficult to get right.
Oh btw in Stockholm you where drawing some dude that had stomach that was really egg-shaped never saw it finished... post it?...it looked good then... in that phase of the drawing anyway.
P E N Ricklund
June 2nd, 2005, 01:34 AM
Hey Mindflaw, I don't have any teacher at the nude figur drawing, so I felt kinda lost at the beginning. I'lll have to think it through next time, maybe do a little stick figure.
Haha, darn that you asked for it, now I had to scan it.

Ok I put down three basic techniques that has helped me :) you might know it all already but I guess this put focus on them :) Hope it's ok if I use two of your pics
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v295/Mindflaw/various%20drawings/pencilator01.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v295/Mindflaw/various%20drawings/pencilator02.jpg
1. Negative space... Using negative space has really improved my lifedrawings. I usually forget it but when I dont anyone will notice. The positive space is the object/subject and the negative space is everything else. Look at the lilac blobs they make a certain shape. When your are drawing you could always check that the negative space is correct if not then the positive space is also wrong...you could also use neg. spece when drawing the contour of the model. Ok why should you use negative space? look at the positive space your eyes is now reading in the direction of the black arrow which means that your eyes travel over volume (shade) to the edge between negative and positive space which makes the contour line.
We easily get decieved by volume it makes the form look smaller than it is. Now look at the negative space. Your eyes are now travelling over form (yellow arrow) we do not get deceived as easily. Of course there are some volume in the negative space too so it is really important to force yourself to think form not volume. Second pic has great negative spaces since they are surrounded by the object/subject. First pic is a little harder since the negative space is the chair (more volume than the "air" in second pic) and also bigger. Anyway kept shortly positive space = volume = deception, but negative space = form = clarity.
Ok neg. space gives two advantages clarity and one more way too look at reality
2. This one I also use to forget but I draw better when not. Use the background too not only the model... there are always landmarks in background they will not move like the model and you will not get "lost" as easily.
3. Sighting (syftning) use a stick (en blompinne funkar bra) use the hand you don't draw with put your arm straight out extend it fully... if not it's really easy to get the stick at a different distance from your eyes and the object/subject thus changing the size your measuring. Think that you put the stick on a closed window, so the stick always is in a 90 degree angle and only uses 2 dimensions and not the third which does not exist in the paper...it's easy to get the above wrong. Many people at the classes I took, found it difficult to change from eyeballing to sighting it takes some practise to be able to quickly change way of thinking... anyway put focus on eyeballing. I personally think you only should use sighting in the beginning (as was my teachers advise) then eyeball the rest and occasionally double check by sighting. Anyway try to at least sight the outer points ( green dots) of the object/subject. This way you don't run out of space and get initial size-guidelines. Ignore lowest green dot it is imho better to find the outer point of the model instead.
I found using the stick to get the angles right really boosted the speed I draw. Just put the stick in the angle you want like the leg ( green lines well one at a time) and then keep the stick in that angle and put it on the paper. You get both the angle and the distance. It is simpler if you got an easel and you also get more "schwung" in your drawing when standing up and using easel. Anyway it looks like you did something similar in the first pic (in my post) but eyeballed it instead.
Hope you understood my english (I do not have the time to check grammar and stuff hehe) and had some use of it even if it just basic stuff anyway they all has helped me. cya
Ps: one more basic thought don't forget that when you draw the model the longer you draw the more you see so don't hesitate to change while you´re drawing. This is also why you should start with a little initial stick figure in one of the corners you get the base and draw better from the beginning etc.

Hi pency
Last one is looking nice (also the pointed out by dCepT) I agree about the contrast - see how fine it looks around the eyes. Use that in the areas that has deep shadows - skinfolds etc.

Going really dark with pencil.... well..... heh..... I got problems with that too Though using a really soft pencil and going over the paper over and over again... layer upon layer so to speak so you don't destroy the paper is what has worked best for me so far. There are black colour pencils but I haven't tested them. (You could also cheat and play around with the "computerprogram settings") eh don't understand how you meant by shiny but if you want it to be shiny... get some highlights in the dark and it gets shiny but try to not draw at the places where you want the highlights it tough to erase so it looks good.
have fun happy birthday and stuff :)

np... If you find a way to get impossible black or close to it be sure to notify me M'kay...Anyway this might be useful if you got ps or gimp or any other program that has layers with multiply function... test to duplicate layer then set the new layer at multiply then play around with the layer opacity it vill darken all the nuances of grey but not the white parts...it works ok best I have found so far when "cheating"

Yo Pencillator, nice to see someone else using Loomis, keep truckin' =)
The issue with the desaturated colors could be caused by a bunch of things - make sure you're working in RGB, as CYMK has a decidedly narrower gamut, also if you are working in dull colors, there's no need to worry - you're working in photoshop you can easily pump up the saturation and contrast post humously.
if you need further instructions just say it.

If I remeber correctly using low opacity when working with colours in computer applications makes the colours dull. Try make a palette where you already decided all the colours and work with high opacity and "shift the colour" more often instead. Enviro-stuff is looking good! Join me and Mindlaw over in Sketches and works in progress. We've made a enviro-thread where we practice :)
'bout you digi-portrait, and the latest creature.. Try to pick a warm and a cool color for the skin (cool colors for receding planes are traditionally good stuff...I've heard..somewhere.. ;) ) That way you get more variation in the skintone, and that should bring it more to life. what software are you using btw?
Shit, I can't wait to get my PC up and running (turns out the damn scanner won't work on the mac I'm borrowing), and then I'll hit ya with a bandwidth-killin' update on sketches..hehe.. I got myself a small moleskine-book I carry around and sketch interesting people in. Pretty cool practice!
Keep 'm coming! You rock!

Pencilator I just looked through from the start of your thread and the pencil work development is no less then astounding, your line feel is so much better, your value work is so much better your proportion is so much better. I think your studies are really paying off, but I implore you not to stop them.
I think a lot of your digital painting needs work however, I feel that they are too easily identifiable as default brush creations, a tip I can give is to really work the opacities if you're using the defaults, it createds lots of overlay visual interest and also learn to blend in photoshop, bu using the eyedropper tool (hold alt and keep pulling the values from the canvas itself to maintain the pallette) - or you can use the heal tool or smudge tool.
Keen to see more studies - btw, I appreciate you checking my thread so often, thanks bud.

Magic Man: Thanks for the props, felt really good :D. With a cooment like that I won't stop doing studies.
My coloring isn't the best, I've just started to paint. I've been afraid of it to long. But with people like the ones of CA you just can't stay away for long :)
I appreciate your tips.

I really like the 2nd row with the crazy camera tilt angles, much more dynamic feeling than straight on and symetrical works. I think it adds intrest at least to this subject, though if you had more developed and scifi/fantasy the cameraangle might take away from the intricacy of the enviornments.
Thanks for ya comment. Of the pictures from my sketchbook a little less than 1/2 was from life.

Perre, nice studies.. good to see you are doing some sick studies.. awsome! One thing you could try is rotate the arm a bit, like visualise it and then draw it with the reference you have.. so it's like a slightly modified version of the ref you have.. am I talking crap?? :P Love those concept characters, like magic man said, there are someminor adjustments but these are looking damn good. :) it's good you are applying your studies with your creative drawings! keep going perre!

very nice !!
you are getting better and better (its true!) between posts, even if its small steps its still noticable steps...
hmm, do you remember when me and leo talked about the center line (anatomy wise)?
that the body has a center line, and you can construct a body by for an example : the left shoulder/collar bone and chest and mirror it from the center line so you have a complete torso... works well in perspective to..
a center line is important.. i think you need to harness you anatomy, its very good but "wild".
/idiot rant
great images though!
keep at it !

Good progression in this thread. You pencilwork is strong, but it seems that your pen work is much more superior. Although odd, I suppose it is justified by the time spent. There is a lot of creativity here. I like the ano work. It has come a long way from the begining. Your shading and form are really progressing. Keep up the good work and hey, toss me a beer 'cause in the same boat man.

I've been trying to get out of my comfort zone, so bye bye to the monsters. No more of them for a while.
Now when I sit down and draw I feel empty, it can't be so patetic, I must be able to draw something else.
