forget about the eye glasses and the photoshop lense flare...these were added as an after thought.

[I know the glasses look like they're floating on my face and that the lense flare is cheap...I appologize to all you guys out there]

Ummo: Thanks. It took me about 5-6 hrs. I think the strange perspective is due to the distortion of a cheap digital camera a close range. I printed the pic to use as a reference, so as not to hurt my face.
Nice pics btw, I like the loose strokes and the expression of the first one. I think adding your hand to a SP always makes things more interesting.

Oblio: Nice, i like the perspective of the first one you did also.

Blackhawk: Great. Get well soon.

zeitzeuge: Very abstract

clayrodery v.03: I like it, blind contours always show alot of character.

reeves: The glasses really add to it. I wish I knew how to use a computer.

I've been reading Frankenstein lately (like for the 1000th time) and realized that I've never seen a drawing of the Creature done based off of the exact description from the original text. So why the hell not do one/self-portrait?

hey clay thats really quite spooky. great job on the scars, and your eyes are really haunting. The extreme lighting on your face makes you look either realy greasy or like your head was dipped in bronze. ..guess it does add to the mood tho.

fax i dont know much about compostion but i think you did very well. the angles of your face are laid out in a sort of criss cross that makes your eye follow around the image. having the left edge be at an angle was a good idea. only thing is that the eye highlight attarcts to much attention to me ad same with the lip in the corner is maybe a tad too dark.

Man i should be drunk right now. Anybody do anything for Mardis Gras?

Here's the ol' mirror on the lap view:

i played around wih the contrast on this one and it looked much more interesting, but i am posting it as i painted it, as a reminder of how much of a puss i am.

retro your charcoal is looking better and better.

Rusty looks like your head is compressed a bit horizontally but nice moody effect.

Oblio you are really skilled at just using a few gestures to define you features.

Hey helltaxi, cool to see you posting in here. I like your second one better, but the lighting on your face in the first is pretty sweet. takes me on average 45 min to do a portrait ...cant usually hold a pose for any longer.

Wow brokencow! thats really bold! i have to learn how to do that! all the colors are really extreme but still appropriate.

retro.that one you posted on the first page where you never really modeled the eyes is my fave.It has an even balance of line and shading, maybe do more in that direction.

ummo your really pumped these out like diareea.lol..great to see alot of them, that upshot one is my fave cause you handled a tricky perspective really well there.....nah its not far of my face proportions,im a tall, thin guy, narrow faced,i think its because i over shadowed the left side alot..

Blackhawk,i know your scanners shot but i really want to see more of yer traditional, get it working if you can....great job as always on these :).

Oblio, maybe more traditional, with no digital..exploit the power of the pencil, that makes no sence..lol

Thanks taxi, first one i like but it wouldnt hurt to work on it a bit more(add in small details)..nice haircut by the way...cough,dork,cough..:)..jk m8ty

clay, thats just awesome man, haunting glare on that one,..well done..

I usually dont like photo ref drawings but yours r great Faxtar, great line work, deffinatly put the time into those..

Well executed Zipp..forms r painted really well, something funky bout the eyes though, just dosent have that spark of life, which is probably the hardest part to do on a SP..

nice to see a diff style from ya keyth,..shadows r keyed out well..

just what ummo said brokencow..nice.

that one mustve taken a while lionel, posing then painting, posing then painting, awesome man,hand/arm gestures really help express emtions.

This is one of the longest ones I've worked on in a long time. It came out looking stiff to me, but I felt like I poured a lot into it. It kind of felt like a bag to throw all of my emotions into, but the portrait was still empty.

http://members.cox.net/blackhawk9/spod/spod138.jpg

Rusty - Nice work man. I actually just got my scanner working again. The quality isn't too good, but I went ahead and scanned in a few of the things I've done and posted them into the Life Drawing Forum. If you want to check them out, they are in there. I'll probably start doing traditional portraits again. I picked up a bunch of toned and black paper and white charcoals and pastels, so I'm going to experiment with that a bit.

Keyth - Ohhh, a new style from you. The hatching on the head bugs me a bit, but it's good to see you pulling away from your convential. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Keep it up bud.

Ummo - Great job on your last couple. The most recent one looks structurally wrong to me though. It may be the neck/chin connection or the angles, something just doesn't seem right. Both spectacular work though. I applaud your perseverence.

Helltaxi - Good work. The last one has some good color relationships going on, although the form became kind of jumbled. Solid stuff.

Brokencow - LOL, this SP reminds me of something, I can't remember what it is though. I just remember seeing this one and a little fart went off in my brain, but I can't put a finger on it. Sorry, I'm rambling.

Retro - Great work man, I'd like to see you go the next step and try for a long piece. Try to get it as realistic as possible. You have a beautiful style, I'd like to see how it interprets into a realistic piece.

Oblio - Good graphical approach to this last one. Keep working at it bud.

Have a great Friday everyone.

wow - super stuff around!
thx. for adices and all - for now i've just got a new tablet (old like hell but BIG - UD series) so it's hard to stay away from it :)
Anyway i'm working my pencil too (daily) working on my cast drawing. I'll keep that in mind.
On another hand i think that digital scetching is a fair way to learn - the undo tool makes you to draw the same line until you do it right without filling the piece up with lines.

Yup I feel the lull too, and I am guilty. Sooo much going on If I join in with everything, I just never paint just what I want to paint. Not to mention getting behind in the comment department. one voice on the shoulder says, go-on surf the other says, go-on paint. Not sure which one is the good-cop and which one the bad

ummo, I'm not ignoring you, I am just not sure what to say
Blackhawk, hang in there be positive. This one has a bit too much blender gray in it although the shine through canvas effect helps aleviate it. If I hadn't seen what you are capable of though, I wouldn't have said a thing.
brokencow, intense and graphic. Hows Painter working for you? Are you feeling more comfortable yet.
killing.mouse  looks like how I think you look even though it is covered with mouse wool.
clay, sparse yet effective.
retro, the charcoal is really helping your values. Your line work rocks already. It looks like you are moving forward again, you did seem a bit stuck at one point.

edit: I feel terrible, I forgot the original reason for my post, Oblio: I am so happy you are still here, it is an inspiration as well as a whip. Your persistance is amazing. Now, maybe it would be good for you to do a long careful one again. I guess the same applies to me as well.:D

wow a couple new faces here! why is it that most self portraits must be a product of late late night inspiration?

empty your fisrt sp is beautiful. love the shadowing youve done on your chin and the curve on your left cheek is really cool. the second sp seems a little long in the cheek. ..tabularasa?

Brokencow i dont know what your are talking about, your SPs are droolable. maybe the latest isnt as snazzed up as usual but based on your avatar alone i think you know your colors. :D

Clay i like that effect you did in the second one tho i guess i cant read. nice color scheme in the first btw.

hey faxtar thats a sweet painting. you remind me that i need to do a non digital SP some time its just too easy to do them with this damn computer. but yea that painting seems almost more realistic than many of the portraits i have seen from you not sure why. the balpoint guy has a cool vibe goin on.

Welcome to the forum lumei. Looks great for a first time SP in PS .. and even done with a mouse eh? nice. only crit that you eyes lips and hair are too drawn in and dont mesh well with your swaths of tone elsewhere in the image.

it's nice to see that you've done 100 of these and they all still look the same. Same front mug shot. Same expressions. I really wish you'd try something else. Different lighting or something. ANYTHING! I've seen you do it every once and awhile. IT would be nice to see more. Also try doing something more with it like other people have.

But, if this is your goal, then forget what i said.
Just a suggestion, something i'd like to see.

Kaini - Thanks. I wanted to get a bit more energy into my effort. My SP's have been rather stale for awhile. That pencil sketch rocks. As Daarken asked, when are you going to do another oil? Yours are always great to look at.

Oblio - Keep em' coming bud. Try to spend some more time on an SP, maybe spend a few hours or more on one and really try to nail it proportionally and value wise. You have a pretty basic representation in all of your SP's, now try to mix it up and really spend a lot of time on just one and really go at it. :nana

LOL sorry, just had to throw the banana in there.

HellTaxi - That is a great SP man. The contrast between the colored and uncolored is nicely pulled off, although I would have personally gotten rid of the underline drawing in the colored portion and really accentuated the contrast, but nevertheless, great work. As for me being busy... well yes, extremely... hahahaaa, so you nailed it on the head. If I'm not doing school for 5 hours a day then it's work for 6 during the week and 12 hours on the weekend. I'm making money for school though, but I need to work a lot more drawing back into my schedule again.

Retro - Beautiful work man. Your teeter-tottering back and forth between getting loose and then tightening up, good to see the different flavors. Now I'm just waiting on that painting from you. I'm actually planning to do an oil SP of myself here in a week as well. Keep them coming bud, good to see you still working hard at it.

Lionel - Nice work and congrats on 100. I agree with Broken though, I definitely enjoyed it when you started mixing it up a bit and your work seemed to improve. Make it exciting for yourself and have some fun with the SP and go wild. Don't be afraid to really screw up an SP, experiment and fail, then experiment and succeed. Keep them coming bud.

MCM - Oh, it's the elusive MindCandy :D Nice work man, mucho improvement, when are you going to regularly stop by again? Take it easy bud.

Zero - Nicely done. The ear is flat, but the rest of the SP has a great sense of form to it. Strong execution on it. Keep stopping by, this was a great contribution.

Daarken - LOL, not as much as I used to. You've been kicking ass I noticed, those pastels you've been posting up and the white portrait drawings have been kick ass. You've improved 10 fold in that absence. Me, I hit a wall, I'm furiously fighting to try to break past it and start improving again. Good to see you back in this thread bud.

Take it easy guys.

uh.. guys?
i'm in deep shit .. blurp.
I've been trying all kind or approaches lately - focussing on retro's technique too.

it seems that i've got familiar with my face and while i still have tons to learn from doing sp's it seems that i have a great hole in my knowledge. I need to study more anatomy and to focus on rendering and form with other references.
I have strugled with some things last days and the results are unpostable!!!!
BH - spending more time on a SP is definitely a good thing - spending more time on ANY drawing is cret - yet i feel like i need to nail down my lines - i feel like my hand is not listening to me - spending more time will work in the end since i'l constantly correct faults - yet.. i plan to train my hand and make it listen.
I hope you understand.
retro - i've tried your approach - some linse are comming good others.. are horrible. Do you draw only with your arm or you use also a the wrist and fingers while moving the pencil?
I'll be visitting here to post once in a while but for now.. i'll be moving my daily efforts in the middle class section - looks like they need a push there :D
I planned to comment on you pieces today - but... i can't do it. My mind is blocked by real frustration gathered in the last days.
Just.. keep pushing, ok?

ha ha. too funny. i'm sorry retro. sometimes things get a little crazy.

it's difficult to get a job anywhere these days. i've been doing a lot of 3d stuff lately to broaden my scope. some game companies here are showing interest (well i've at least gotten some emails). i've had some interviews recently so...we shall see.
the book i believe you are referring to is called "designers guide to color combinations" it's more "designy" i guess but...it's got a lot of combinations that are pleasing and it goes into why they are and this and that and and and and and.....

i can't wait to get one of these jobs though. there's a school here called http://www.representational-art.com/ ...gonna take some classes once i have some real cash. i need to get some "real" drawing and painting skills and that's all they focus on.

i tried to paint for real yesterday...man it's hard.

hope school's going well!!!:chug: :D

Some comments tonight, rest tomorrow morning.

Keyth - Meaty, you had beautiful form in your last couple of SP's. I see your interested in going to an atelier school to recieve some education. I'm actually looking at the same thing right now. I'm working my ass off to get money for it though. I've worked 5 days straight, going onto 6 by Wednesday. It's a pain in the ass, but my drive to make some money to get me the schooling I need is insatiable at this point. Unfortunately with current school and work I've lost too much freetime. Good luck if you decided to go to that school though, a strong foundation in traditional art is INVALUABLE.

Now as to why I stopped on the last one, I felt it was appropiate at that point to stop it. Sometimes I hit a point where I don't want to take it any further and that's where I end :D.

Great job bud.

Retro - Thanks for the painted SP bud, your work is getting stronger and stronger and stronger. I know, I know, I owe that oil :D I gotta start working on it tomorrow night when I get home from work. Hopefully I'll have enough time before sleep hits me.

Faxtar - Thanks for noticing it was my birthday :D It was kind of crappy, I worked 12 hours yesterday, plus I was sick all day, bleh. It was good though. Faxtar, great job on the rendering. Your exercising some nice control on the rendering, be careful of the proportions of features though. Your rendering the hands small and the form is kind of awkward. The rest is looking pretty good though. Keep working at it.

Jhibbs - Nice job on that last one bud. You've been busy and it shows, great job. Your skill is growing, I see the improvement in these. I need to start studying some real master paintings up close, I need a good education on how to paint and that would be one of the best ways to be taught.

To everyone else, I'll comment tomorrow, I'm going to head to bed and get some sleep before this sickness overwhelms me again. Night.

woah what can I say.. so much diversity and skills from everyone..well since I still can't post anything recent due to lack of a scanner or direct access to digi cam I'll post a couple of efforts from about 6 months ago both done in carbothello and pastel pencil on canson paper using two mirrors. sorry about the lack of focus/contrast but by the time I took these shots a lot of the pigment had blown off the surface(I hate fixing stuff).
this one was about 25 mins.
http://ii.net/~ilah/images/ro/25minprofile.jpg
With this one I was playing with omitting certain areas.. I left it unfinished as it said what it needed to say.. I wasnt in a very gleefull mood. it took about 3 1/2 hours.. but half of that was fiddling around and reworking under the influence of the pigment coming off the paper(bad ventilation!).
http://ii.net/~ilah/images/ro/meinprog2.jpg
I'll have to do some more in paint.. it's been a while since I last did a SP or anything in real paint so I've been getting the fear :P

Been a long time between spod's for me. Found a scanner at Uni today and was able to scan this in before rushing to my next class. I've moved back up to Brisbane, with only clothes, music and basic art supplies following me up. So my graphics tablet is still in Canberra, along with all my programs (I'm currently borrowing this computer, but own the Radeon 9700, keybrrd and mouse, and floppy drive)

So posting this to confirm that I'm still alive. Bituva rough scan, and no post work on it, so it's a tad washed out on this monitor. Anyway...
