I start out drawing several roughs on Aquabee Tracing Paper. I like using tracing paper because you can start out with a real basic design and use layers of tracing paper to build on the design. The image below is the last rough of the poster design I did. I draw roughs a little smaller them the actual art size as it is easier for me to work this way and faster. As for the pencils I use, they are good old Black Warrior Pencils.

The next step is enlarging the rough to the correct size. I use a cheap copy machine at the local copy shop, enlarging the art I have to piece copies together using tape to form the complete design. The size of the image for the poster is 10" x 22".

Now I transfer the design onto the paper or illustration board. I do this by using a pencil and covering the complete back of the enlarged copy I have made. Next I flip the copy back over with the shaded side down and tape the copy in place. I trace over all lines on the copy. This transfers the design onto the illustration board.

At this point the design is very light, but you can see enough to start working on the actual art. In the image below you can see I have started inking in the logo. Some times (like the logo above) I jump right in and start inking and other times I will re-pencil parts of the design in much greater detail. I use tracing paper again at this point to cover the art as I work to keep it clean. The pens I use are Kon-I-Noor Rapidographs and the ink I use is FW Non-Clogging Waterproof India Ink.

Below you can see more of the DEATH NOTE coming to life. Notice the black marks in the lower right corner. I use non-clogging ink but my pens still clog up now and then. Also note that the illustration board is a little larger then the finished piece.

Most of the inks done now. The show for the Misfits will be at the House of Blues so I pencil in my version of the House of Blues logo.

Hard to tell looking at the image above, but the HOB logo is inked in. At this stage I cut the excess board off leaving about 2" boarder around the art.

Next scan in the art at 300 DPI in grayscale. Image #9 is a scan of the finished inks. From here I use Photoshop to add the colors. After the colors are finished I email the files to the printer or publisher. In this case it is Drowning Creek Studios.
