First of all, being that this is my first post here, I just want to offer a warm and friendly hello to everyone :)

It wasn't my intention to do a totally photorealistic piece or a matte painting for that matter, I was still going for the basic feel of a photo.

http://www.theinternetsite.com/blackpool/falcon_inthe_hills_1024.jpg

I diliberaly didn't finish off the rest of the scene because I thought the contrast of finish to none finished would pop the falcon out a little more. Does it come across that way to you guys or just laziness on my part?

This was just one of those pieces that kept evolving into somthing much larger then what was originally intended. It started as just quick excersise in loosly interpreting an old photograph. But after I did that, it was just begging for a center of intersest so I decided to paint the Falcon in there which led to me later making up a story as to why it's there and adding Han and Chewbacca turning the whole piece into a day in the life of Han Solo.

Let the thrashing begin. . . .

Trashing? I think its pretty wicked!
I would like a more finished version though.
Yes, the falcon does pop out but to me the contrast is to strong and makes it look like the falcon doesnt fit in there, like you copy/pasted it in:)

do what you want, I like it anyway:D

I kind of get that " i did the falcon first and then had this desert painting and just added the first into the second"

I love it ! It loos really good and almost photorealistic. It's like what it would look like if chewy(which is kind of hard to see) and han visited earth.

Welcome to conceptart! and please post more stuff if you've got it!:D

I think it's great. I think the unfinished background works, the atmospheric perspective in the distant hills seems a little off, but overall I like the piece.

All your edges on the falcon are so sharp, it almost looks like a 3d render. If you wanted to get more congruity with the rest of the painting, you might want to go the opposite route and soften some of those edges, instead of hardening the rest of the painting. I also agree about the atmosphere on the hills, it ends with a sharp line that passes through the radar dish, which is a bit odd. Also, one might argue that it's a bit dark underneath the falcon. Some ambient light there could also help tie it to the rest of the painting.

Good pic though. Welcome to Concept Art! :)

I like it a lot, but there's one thing that might make it pop a little more, and that's if you spent just a little more time on the lighting.
Just for instance, how the falcon casts a shadow almost straight down (or apears to), while the figure and crates cast theirs off to the left. Other than that, terrain, Sky and content seem to exhibit different times of day (sky is almost like an early or late point, the terrain is close to the same, but the falcon is glowing like it's early afternoon). But I do like it a lot. Just think about how in Episode 4, how the desert was always hyper-bright, but don't go quite that bright, it hurts eyes... hurt....

And trust me, your first post is a lot better than mine ever was, I really hated mine....:hmm:

Keep it up!

Such great advice from everyone! Thanks!

So the general consensus is that I need to harmonize the falcon and the background more. That helps me more then just with the picture, but also with learning which instincts to trust and which to ignore. And I agree that I need to fix the shadows. I was trying to compensate for the uneven terrain which would play havock with thier angles, but I think I may have made them too long as well.

Thanks again for all your help.

Han: "You bafoon... what the fsck did you do to the hyperdrive system?!?"
Chewy: "BALAAHHHHHH!!!!!"

Yeah, I'm such a dork... uhh

The falcon does stand out a bit...just too white, should be a bit grayer.. more uhh weathered. The detail on it looks fab tho.

I like the green in the background, that's truly believable as the earth's surface...

Looks great so far :)

I agree with Tedsuo in a sense. However I would add a hit of ground or sky color, to make it fit more in the picture rather than soften the edges. I imagine either solution would work but thought I would give you a second option. Of course, that is just being picky, it looks great.
