Any information at all about the school of visual arts in NYC would be much appreciated. What's it like? How hard is it to get in? Etc. I've got some....issues with my academic past, which I will get into if this turns into a discussion that is headed towards that. But so far it seems like a school that I have a lot of interest in. Is it worth it?

One of my best friend's just got accepted there! Great film school. I'll email her and ask her for some more information for you. ^_^

It's a very artsy school, that's from what I've seen. I've heard their illustration program is really awesome though. Here's some general stuff I've picked up from going there and applying and getting rejected and whatnot: I'm not sure if it's *that* hard to get into. I'm sure they get lots of applicants from people in the NYC metro area. As long as you can draw stuff realistically and have creativity(which is what they want to see) you shouldn't have too much of a problem. Although I think they really want you to include more than just observational stuff. They really want to see some kind of uniqueness with you. Novelty I guess is the word.

I applied last year for computer art, got rejected, felt kinda bummed, got accepted into an infinetly better computer animation program a year later(Ringling w00t), felt much better, and I am now gloating like there's no tomorrow in front of the SVA building. Take that! :D Mauahahaha...that's for not recognizing my potential early on! Booyaka! <ahem> Thank you.

I don't want to discourage you from SVA; I was going to apply there myself this year. I already applied to 3 schools (including Ringling) and got accepted to them all, so I didn't really need to apply to SVA.

My first turn off is that it's located in the mainland jungle of Manhattan with no real campus - unlike Pratt. My other turn off occured when I was checking out the courses - and especially for 3D animation, they seemed to overall lack drawing courses - for foundation year and for the 3D animation program in general; which is kind of strange, considering drawing and 3D animation is like a car and gas - you need drawing first and then it becomes 3D animation.

(Hmm... maybe not the best analogy... oh well)

But overall, SVA sounds like an alright school to me. But still, it was alright (for me). Choose the school that best fits you. Like many others, you can search for forums and read all the opinions of different schools and some may influence you and some may not, but in the end it's all up to you. You will succeed anywhere you apply to if you work hard and really strive to achieve the most out of your talents, abilities, and whatnot.

Hope that helps.

If it is a school that you are interested in most def. apply. SVA was my goal school not my dream school. My aim was to get into sva ever since 10th. I got a 1200 on my SAT's and my average grade is 95-97. I think that art schools pay attention to grades but each person is a different case unique to their situation. If you check their numbers they have accepted people from the bottom of bottm test SAT scores to the top. It all varies. I did the national portfolio review that sva, fit, pratt, and cooper attended. The sva rep loved my work but suggested that I become part of the work for example my still lives showed nothing of who i was or represented. I just showed technical ability in my work. Later on I ended up making a 15'ish foot wide self portrait, and i do believe they take into account growth from the review. March i was welcomed into the animation dept. and sva. I guess it could be a bit pricey but, there is financial aid, work study and more free money. You have to make the ultimate choice though...good luck.
