people here usually use either painter (not paint shop pro) or photoshop, personally I find them both equally accomodating, although I prefer the interface in photoshop and the brushes in painter.
p.s. this would have probably been betterr submitted in the lounge

Yeah, if you got the money or the means, I'd hook it up with both photoshop and corel painter, they work seamlessly ( for the most part if you got the memory to handle it ) Obviously some use one more than the other, but that's my two freakin cents.

Yep, I went onto the Corel Painter website, when i clicked on it it it said it was like $400!!!!! :O I would really like the realistic looking painbrushes, and not so ditigal painted look, but i dont know if photoshop does that :bashful: Paint Shop pro has oils and pastels etc, but the program generally is hard to use :er:

Hey
try artrage first (you get more time to think about which app. to buy and more time to save money). It's simple, it's free. You don't get so many choices but I believe that's a good thing. It has oil which works in an impasto mode it got chalks pencil, marker and some more. Have not used it much since I prefer to practice my mediocre trad. skill first but heres some works made by artrage viewed at this site press me (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=36975&highlight=artrage) (second pic is my fav.)
link to artrage download (http://www.ambientdesign.com/artragedown.html) (make sure to read the download page)
PS: I bet your mum gets happy if you use this app. :P :teeth:

My version of Paint shop pro is pretty old (PSP 7.0 - it's what I use at home), and I've used several photoshop versions (on campus pretty much everything from PS 5 onward...haven't used CS though)...
Neither is really better or worse than the other from what I can tell, its basically personal preference and what you get used to that determines which is "better" for you.
They basically serve the same function (PSP vs PS) - and in the future I'd be looking at Jasc Paintshop Pro becoming very friendly to use with Corel Painter...since Jasc and Corel have started working together (basically is a strategic alliance against Adobe)

CS is great. I had issues with Photoshop 7 and Illustrator 10 that were all adressed in the CS versions.
