Hi, rebeccca ere :bashful:

I was having a disscusion with my family a few hours ago, and we were talking about my art.....let me explain. <ahem>

I am in 3rd year Highschool, in a standardgarde artclass but i am feeling VERY heldback!!!
the stuff they are teaching me is things i already knew in primary 7! (the other kids in my class are actually learning this, ie. didnt know anty of this befor and this is their first time seeing this, where as ive new this since primary!!)
this may sound crazy to most, i know :er: BUT i was wondering if it is possible to be put into a higher, more challenging class, but im allready in the highest possible art class in my year :$ . and ive still got another two years of this TORTURE to go.

so please if anyone here is an art teacher, in scotland prefebly :\ could tell me what i can do :D cos im sitting doing pointless critical work in class WAITING for everyone else to catch up, and this goes on for like, two weeks or sumpthin!! This bassically means that the teacher cant teach me, and dont have any work for me :)

please help.... peace

I get the feeling you're like the most of us who've gone into art- you're probably more in tune with the real art world than your high school art teacher. It's a shame your teacher plans on teaching to the lowest common denominator, but given the circumstances-- you've got to draw on your own. You can't rely on them to dictate your course anymore; don't let their assignments dictat what goes into your portfolio anymore.

Eventually you'll have to do this anyway, so start picking up art books and getting lessons from them. Try different mediums, new papers, different canvases, new pencils, etc.. It's about self exploration now.

Think about where you want to go AFTER high school and start gearing your pieces that way. Draw from observation. Take a sketch book out and start drawing the human figure at every turn. There are numerous & endless assignments that can be given but it's going to be up to you as to what you want out of art.

Lo there, just wanted to add my two cents.

I did the whole art stantard grade stuff to the best I could when I was at school sticking to ther rules of what they wanted, and then did my higher art. Although it may have seen trivial at the time, I think its important to just go through it and learn the basics really well, I mean I didn't even have the internet then, let alone know what conceptart was(I cant imagine just how useful this forum is for you at your age). I mean a lot of the people on this bloody forum have probably never painted a fruit bowl in their life, so I would just treat it as a good time to sharpen up your REAL traditional painting/drawing skills before you get all technical with the digital crap we get swamped with these days. I wouldn't be so persistent to progess to higher art just yet tbh, its nout special, just a lot of art history if i remember right. Just take it as it comes, and do it as good as you can.

I just used to draw all the time in every class.. on paper, folders, tables :P, anything lol, it doesn't have to end in art class.

Peace
