I'm a new member to ConceptArt, although I have been lurking for months now :) This will probably be my only post until I'm brave enough to show some of my work, but I'm side-tracking. I hope I have this thread in the right place...

I have the chance to acquire 3DS Max and/or Maya via a college lecturer, and since I have aspirations as a character designer and possible animator (illustratot - most definitely), I wasn't sure which is more suited to my needs. A friend of mine seems to think 3DS Max is more suited to game design, whereas Maya is more suited to character design/animation. I suppose, in the end, it isn't the software that makes a difference, its the person using it, but I thought I could ask for some advice from some seasoned 3D artists

Any help that anyone can give will be greatly appreciated  Thank you.

All the packages are pretty much the same gig with different buttons. I'm a character animator and I use Maya. I don't know Max, but I assume it's pretty much the same (how different can it be really?). Either one will further your needs. You can get Maya PLE free of charge if you want to try Maya (outputs images with watermarks and what not). Max is pretty inexspensive compared to even a mediocre Maya license for professional use. So if you want to do freelance and you really worry about being completely legit then I'd go the Max route. Then again there's always Lightwave. It's really all the same.
