This is why I like looking through sketchbooks that don't have as many views. These are a great start to a sketchbook thread. :)
You seem to have a great sense of construction in the face without having to define everything. Definitely want to see more of these.

Really good start here. The last image has some great colors in it... do you plan to work on it more? You should if you don't! Post some more, as Clockwork said, definitely want to see more of these!

Dot be so hard on your self dude, your line
sensitivity is VERY good, your anatomy is well
on its way , and I like the expresions
on your faces. :^^:
Nick Picks:
I dont belive we should be able to
see that much of the left cheek in this angle, the eye
that is further from us should be smaller, it has the
same size and shape as the eye closer to us, and that
diminish the sence of perspective and flatenss out the
head a little bit, its is a very good portrait non the less :D

Only thing ive found is alot of your digi paints are very soft and light, not alot of definition. Adding some darker sharper lines might help to bring out some of the lines. More contrast aswell, to help bring out the forms and stuff.

Ooooh, you updated!
K, I love the color combination on the first one. Blue vs yellow, hmmmmm. But i don't understand your lightning. Where's all that yellow coming from? Cos the lights are pretty dimmed.
Also, the walls definitely need some texture. I'm glad you pushed some of those values. You could even push it a bit more imo. The right part of this piece is my favourite, love the blue/red/yellow-combination there.
Second: I know it's gonna be a bright day and it'll prolly look pretty in the end, but atm i don't like the colors much, they're a bit too muddy.
Just keep up with these, add some more hard edges here and there, cute details.. it's very good already. Just make it perfect now. :)

I love the variety of the buildings. The choice of perspective seems a bit odd though -- I don't have the feeling that I'm actually standing around in the scene checking it out, but I do get the big-tall towering slick buildings feeling, and that's a good thing.

Like I said in IRC, it's starting to look much more lifelike. I think the skin surface is lacking some transparency, and it's coming out a little plastickey looking. I too struggle with the same affliction. Sadly, I don't really know how to fix it.

madster
October 13th, 2005, 03:13 PM
The "plastic-y" look to skin tones is from too harsh of highlights. Skin is NOT that reflective, because skin cells are matte. You have to have more of a gradient effect, than a few skin tones, and then light highlights on top. In Photoshop, thats when you should be switching to the Airbrush tool, with about a 65% flow, and a low opacity of about 9-24% or so. Subtlety is the key for highlight value in skin tones...
~M
Grooveholmes

Skin isnt always matte, there are some places that are naturally more oily than others.. like nose, brow, and forehead for instance.

Hey, good to see more stuff. -I'm liking the girl with the green dress the most so far. -though I agree with the plascitity comment from above.
Maybe it's just standing out as looking overly shiny or reflective because it's making us notice the absence of reflectivity in the areas that should reflect more. Areas like the lips, and especially the eyes, would be nice and moist and have some hard highlights on 'em.
There's kind of an outline right now where the highlighting stops. -kinda shaped like a lone ranger mask. :D If you continue the tones around the eyes into the rest of the piece, and add reflectivity and a little more attention to the eyes, it should really come to life. Good stuff though, as always!

Her face looks a tad skewed, but that might be the perspective and the fact that the jawline disappears in sunlight. Oh, and you should flip the image to show it the same way as the ref, the skewing of the face disappears then, and the whole pic looks more "right".

I really like your landscape stuff. I never do landscapes because I usually get bored with them, but your's all have a personality to them. It feels like there is so much more going on there then just a landscape! They all make me ask questions about what could be going on there.
The boulder, the factory Interior, the foggy corner in the road, the low level approach to the town, those are all my favorites. The girl looks nice too!

Threads have been known to suck throughout the ages, this thread, however, is a prime example of exactly the opposite. It is full of well executed studies and presents the viewer with a progression of the artists work, which is of a quality that is rivalled in very few other threads.
