hi, im currently in high school in australia (two more years), and im thinking of doing a bachelor of fine arts at the main university in my state (three year course). then going abroad to do a masters in fine art or something along those lines. any comments and or suggestions on whether this sounds worthwhile and any good masters courses anybody knows of (anywhere).
thanks a lot

Why get a Masters degree?
Not unless you want to end up teaching later on in life does it even count for anything. And the best teachers out there are ones that have real job experience and NOT necessarily masters degrees.

thanks for the reply, i see what you mean, maybe not a masters then, but some sought of study to diversify from my fine arts degree. perhaps studying at a watts, but im not too sure how that works, seems to be like a workshop that you can study at for any length of time. is that right? if not, could someone put a bit of an explanation or any other path i could take after uni and before a job (probably a year max).

The programs I think you're looking for, you can take ANY time. It's all a part of your education. So big deal if you don't get a degree from these places- it's all about your portfolio. Don't get so hung up on where you're going to school so much- it's all about what you can get out of ANY place you attend. You can go to Podunk State and come out with a killer portfolio if you really busted ass.
Not wanting to skewer your hopes & aspirations, get one bit of schooling down first. You just might change your mind on getting more schooling once you're there.

Like whizbang says, no need to plan so far ahead. You still have plenty of maturing to do once you get to school. While it is important to think further down the road, certain things need not be so nailed down.

From my experience, you'll learn so much more once you're in college anyway. You'll not just learn new mediums but you'll also get a closer look into the business of art as well and I think that's why some of the people here are telling you not to plan so far in advance. You might just want to dive into what you're studying once you're out of school and have no desire for an MFA. Personally I know of very few in the business that have a post Bachelors degree. It's more about your portfolio after awhile.

That is some time away <><><> obviously there is a broad spectrum of factors involved in selection of schools <> the foundation is important as well so make sure your undergraduate experience is what you need first <><> schools change because the instructors change <> the people that are at a school now may not be there when you get ready to go there <> learn what you can where you can and understand that artist really never graduate anyway so just look at education as life experience and go for the kind of life experience you want!
