How do you activate one, i went to the area where you get them and nothing came up no pictures, or do you put your own on and if so how?

In your profile, click "Edit Options"
"Change Avatar"
Make SURE you select "Yes"
Put the link to the image you wish to be your personalised avatar.
"Submit Modifications"

<-- And voilą!
