I apologize if this is the wrong area for this question.
this question can be applied to photoshop as well.

I use oils primarily for work, and have recently been trying to get into digital painting for the last 6 months. One thing that still seems to slow me down, or confuse me is when, and where to use new layers. I experiment alot, and get different results - but I was wondering if there were any big "DON'Ts" that I may not be aware of.

How many do you usually have for one piece? Do you almost always set the layer to Normal mode? Do you paint a background, and set the figures on another new layer? Do you apply details and textures

I realize that there are probably no "definitive" answers. I have seen several techniques in the great tutorials here, but none really seem to go into detail on exactly what layer they are working on.
Thanks for all your help folks - I should probably just quit the day job and work on it at home till I figure it out myself (usually the best way anyway)
