here is a short demo on the portrait I made last night. it was based on Manleys help. I broke it down to 7 simple steps. i used painter 7 . I made all the strokes with the dry ink brush. this was my first attempt at this technique and I will be practicing it more in the future. hope you get something out of it

i hope this helps some of you experiment more with color. My spelling is really bad. I apologize. try to keep the instructions simple and brief so its easier to understand. Jason can go into it with volumes of more depth, this was definately the condensed version. I used this technique for todays portrait as well and I learned alot more the second time through. keep practicing and if it works for you please post your results.
good luck

I, like everyone else who visits your posts, am amazed every time I visit. Thanks so much for taking the time to break one of your works down for us. It is truly helpful and gives a lot of us the "nudge out of the door" that we need to progress.
Much appreciated!!

Thanks for doing this demo! The condensed versions are the best. Outline form...
You also mentioned trying other colors...which of course got me thinking about what some of the masters did with underpainting... I'm sure Jason has an opinion on this, but to oversimplify -- I was just reminded that El Greco painted flesh tones over black, Van Gogh over white, Rembrandt over brown, Michelangelo over green, David over red, and so on. Having that "underpainting" color show through can be very beautiful. Also, the possibilities of color choices for mood and personal style are infinite (um...I guess I need to get out of the burnt umber underpainting rut.)
(I'd just happened to be reading through Thomas Buechner's great book "How I Paint" where he gets into this... so I'm paraphrasing him above - good stuff. A very worthwhile book)

This is great. I think I know my problem. I add too many values too early.
Thanks so much. I know this is a really old thread but it helps. :)
