Well, i started a regime of painting everyday. These are gonna be acrylic on roughly A6 paper, taking varying amounts of time, from life. They're to teach myself painting as my school seems to prefer not to (gotta love school) and are an extra to other painting and drawing i do. Let me know if images don't show etc. Apologies for the not-so-tasty scans.

Gilead-A6 paper means it's 6 by 4 inches (roughly 14.5 by 10.5 cm).

Hi,
First, your paintings are very good, glad you are practicing real life....
Is that a sketchbook you are working on?...I mean, is that " acrylic prepared paper" or just a regular strong paper?
c u soon
fishw
February 23rd, 2005, 12:11 PM
Arcthurus- it's just a cheap little £2 sketchbook with regular, not particularly heavy paper (135 gsm). As they're in a sketchbook, i'm hoping that by the time it's full it should show some progess.

Are you really builing up as thick a coat of paint on your backgrounds as it looks? It looks really thick, but the paper doesn't look wrinkled, how does that work?
I really like these they're fresh and spontanious.
I was so inspired that I started doing my own daily paintings.
fishw
February 24th, 2005, 04:43 PM
Gilead- Scanning paintings does funny things, the paint isn't actually that thick. Glad to hear you're inspired...if you want real inspiration when it comes to daily painting check out Duane Keiser (http://www.duanekeiser.com/index.htm) and his painting-a-day blog. He's the man that inspired me to begin this.

February 25th, 2005, 10:32 AM
A6?! That's tiny! How can you work that small? Anyone who hasn't seen A6 before, the pictures posted here are almost full size. It's about an inch taller and 1.5 wider
Anyway, some nice work here. If you keep this going you'll definately see some improvement. Good luck with it :)
EDIT: Forgot to ask, did you sketch these in pencil first or just go straight for paint?
fishw
February 26th, 2005, 11:38 AM
Big-Dave - It's not impossible to work small. I try to use a big a brush as possible too, to keep it fresh. No there's no under-drawing, it's just painting shapes. Thanks for stopping by.

Cheers Omarpac. yeah i try to paint one every day. Sometimes of course it's not possible, like this weekend cause im gonna be away with no time to myself to paint, but i try to get one done if at all possible. They're mostly between 30 minutes and 45 min. It's a struggle and often i don't wanna do it but i never regret it when i do, it's a good stress reliever (which i need right now!).

Your pictures have style, a unique quality about them very interesting.
Firstly i would like to compliment on your scanner, doing a very good job of scanning them up
To compliment your work i would like to say that i admire your blending skills and tonal use excellent job!
I would like to suggest that you focus on texture and detail, try and use black more etc and get some detail for that enhancement in realism. Also please work on your shadows, they need the most work
Asides from all that Well done and good luck for the future

Thanks for taking a look guys. Rawcraft-Thanks for the useful comments.
Omarpac-I'm not sure a stepbystep from me would be worthwhile, perhaps one day. My process is putting in a coloured ground (normally burnt sienna or raw umber), then blocking in large shapes moving onto progressively smaller shapes.

Damn fish. Really inspiring. I would say to work on those shadows. I think your biggest thing would be to just apply perspective to the shadows rather than just blocking it out. The fan brush is really great, looks pretty real. Is there a technique behind the whole white background thing or is it just for the composition? I'm not really experienced with pushing and pulling.
Lets see a 60 minute session now...

patternagainst-thank you. I just read a tutorial on shadow perpsective which should help. The background colour is simply determined by what surface the object is on. There are 3 main places i paint, each with different coloured surfaces.

omarpac- well i'm flattered to have a stalker, i'm not sure what advice to give seeing as i'm no expert (not by a very very long way). Start with big shapes and move to smaller shapes, look for value more than colour. I'll try to throw together some kinda progess thing showing the steps i use. I should say i don't know much about gouache, Ron Lemen is the man to ask.

do u blend ur strokes?if so what do u use to blend them i coloured with oil but i need somethin easier to paint with at home so thats why i thought of gouache(since i have lots of colour tubes at home)
tell me the technical side of the painting process like how do u mix it with water when to add more water when to use less water
how to blend between edges i know that in oil i use a large dry brush whilst its still wet,in watercolours i soften it with a brush with little water what about acrylics what do u do
plz show me a progress
thanks in advance
fishw
May 11th, 2005, 02:50 PM
omarpac- here we go...I almost never blend brush strokes, i don't like the look. I simply lay down layers of paint, generally fairly thick (not really thick globs of paint though), and transitions of colour are made by simply putting a few colours down in a gradient next to each other. If i do want to blend, i'll take a dry brush and blend the two wet colours as with oils. I never use water with the paint, i prefer it thicker and more like oil paints in consistency. Here's my process (not sure it's too helpful).
1. i put down a coloured ground of raw umber, quite thinly, just to get rid of the white. this helps you to judge values, and just gets paint down. photo (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y109/Fishw/Other/DSCN1351.jpg)
2. i block in the background, generally with a sublte temperature or value change from one side to the other (or top to bottom..it all depends on what i see). Then simple shapes get blocked in. photo (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y109/Fishw/Other/DSCN1348.jpg)
3. Block in shadow. Block in smaller areas, slowly helping the from to emerge. No details until right at the very end. Hightlights in the absolute last few minutes. photo (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y109/Fishw/Other/DSCN1349.jpg)
4. here's a really close up shot (the headphone is about an inch high just to give you an idea). photo (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y109/Fishw/Other/DSCN1350.jpg)
i hope you got something outta that...the best thing to do is just to paint and find out. I have a long way to go so i'm kinda embaressed to be doing this.

i'd recommend starting a thread of your own and get into doing paintings (like your watercolour thread). i'l be happy to give my opinion.
i pretty much block things next to each other. sometimes it's a case of layering stuff in a way that lets you see the layers which gives a gradient. there's lots of ways of applying paint. check out Scott Burdick's demo (http://www.scottburdick.com/demoReflection.htm) which has some good words on brushwork.
I add no water. i mix paint from the tube on my palette and then apply.

I was doing this for a month--stopped for way too long, you inspired me to start again. But how are you painting on paper without buckling?? or maybe you just keep going over the buckles???
I love the thick paint look, but find I can't get it--guess I clean up the blending too much???
I can see I'm going to have to get a scanner---Judy

I have oil paints, and I have a easel. I should really try some of this.
I find the little accomplishments really motivate me.

Judy- looks like i stopped for way too long as well. The paper i use doesn't seem to buckle that much at all. There's a little bit of a curl at the corner but not much. I think it's a case of how thick the paper is and how much water is added to the paint (in my case, almost none). As for getting a "thick paint look", i think getting higher quality paint helps, as cheaper paint seems to go down to nothing no matter how thickly you apply it.

filled that little book i was using, so now i'm into a new book that's twice the size. This one is a5 (roughly 8 by 6 inches), though i still seem to be painting really small. Perhaps i should become a minaturist.

cheers for the encouragement. Well the daily exercise idea seems to have disintegrated as i've had to focus on paintings for school bla bla bla. anyhoo, that's not to say i'm not gonna try to paint more studies like these as often as possible.

i went outside for the first time (to paint, that is). Really overcast day, and i was standing in the rain for most of it. how do plein air painters do it, with all the light changing etc? full respect.

cheers hylandr. i can't wait until i have time again to paint more regularly. school swamps me at the moment, it's seriously frustrating. i hope you manage a more regular schedule than me, it's very rewarding.
anyway, thought i'd post these life drawings here.

Hey,
I totally enjoy your paints. Great effort and nice improvement. Don't stop on them. Landscapes are coming out rather nicely too. Very healthy exercise, something I'd have to do too once it gets warmer.
You should try a more finished painting sometime. Like a stillife.
Nice Lifedrawings too, realy loose. Some studies on proportions and weightdistribution wouldn't hurt though.
So long...

cheers blacky. yeah, my knowledge of proportions and anatomy is shocking. fortunately i have a 4 month summer holiday coming up in 3 months exactly where i plan to do some intensive studying of anatomy, perspective and colour. very far away, but i currently have far too much schoolwork to concentrate on to give it more than a quick look over at the mo.
so anyway, i'm back with paint. but oil paint...aagh! it's like i'm learning to paint all over again, i have exactly the same feeling as i did when i first pulled out some acrylics and started playing....basicaly i have no idea what i'm doing and it's very awkward. but here we are nonetheless, my first time touching oils.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y109/Fishw/18thfeb.jpg
yeah...so you probably have no idea what it is. it's actually a bone i found. if anybody has any amazing links to a very very simple intro to oils, i'd love it. there's a million pages out there, so any recomendations are uber welcome.

ok, back from the dead. kinda. been really busy with school art but i've finally finished it, had my show etc. managed to sell a piece, which is my first sale (still discussing price, since i've managed to land myself a bidding war between two people wanting to buy...sweet).
first, a self portrait (from a photo unlike usual). pretty old, and pretty disgusting.
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y109/Fishw/Other/mepaint.jpg
second, the sold piece. again, based on photo rather than from life.

i'm hoping to get back to painting daily from life in 6 weeks when i leave school and start having free time again.

nice cast drawings..one big critique..unless it is a quick sketch or study..i still can see a line separating the shadows from the light..if you look at shadows..that transition from light to dark should be smooth gradated tones..hard lines only in sharp places.. think of sfumatto..treat shadows like smoke..hardly any outline..these are more noticeble in the foot shadow and underneath the chin of Dante. Nice drawings though..sight size i presume?

Hi
I really like your cast drawings, I think the top and bottom are the most sucessful. The foot is great but some of the hightlight edges seem a little soft. I've only done three cast drawings, but when I do then Im standing back about 5/6 foot from the cast, is sight size when your right up next to it measuring with a plumb line etc? What school do you go to?
Cheers

cheers allejo, i'll def keep that in mind with the next drawings.
timmyhol...i'm at charles cecil. we do sight size, which means standing far back as you do (nearer 8 feet back i guess). i don't really go in for plumb lines, they're horribly inaccurate and don't help train your eye nearly as much.

I don't use plumb lines either cuz my hands just keep shaking haha. Frustrating.
Do they teach free-hand drawing at Cecil?

you're surprisingly free in you're approach. You take it to the level of finish you want (with the type of finish you want too...hatched, blended, mixture) and different people go about things slightly differently. It's interesting to see actually.
I tend to knock in, free-hand, a few little marks, moving around the whole image, slowly building up a sense of the overall shape, taking visual measurements of opposite contours etc. All the time, checking in a mirror. Then you get more specific. The idea is that when you put a mark down, it's not necassarily (and generally is not) that accurate, so you shift things about and get progressively specific.
Dizon

Cool. But what I meant was, does he teach other methods of drawing besides sight-size? Like just simple free-hand drawing where you don't have to set-up in sight-size.

Great stuff. I am thoroughly impressed and shall decide to give acrylics another shot. After all, with lack of studio space and all of my pets, oils are impossible for the time.
You capture reflections and shine very well.
Do you not experience problems with your paper buckling beyond belief by painting on it? I have had only problems painting on paper.
