Here's the deal. When it comes to drawing from life or reference photos, I kick butt. But when drawing directly from the mind without references, I need alot of work. I believe there's a distinct difference between life/reference vs imagination/ideation drawing techniques. When I draw from the mind, it feels like I'm learning to draw all over again.
I have a degree in Industrial Design, but I don't feel the ideation drawing classes helped. They never focused on how to find those cool shapes and design forms when drawing from the mind. We spent 2 weeks drawing cubes in perspective because most of the students simply couldn't draw. In my opinion, if you can't draw a cube in perspective, you have no business in an ideation class. Basic drawing should be required beforehand.
Anyhow enough whinning. I've taken matters into my own hands and ordered alot of the Scott Robertson, Feng Zhu dvd's. I know it's just a matter of practice, practice, practice. I was just hoping for some advice as to how I might faster improve my drawing from the mind skills. Has learning to draw from real life first hindered me or does it simply add to my overall abilities?...
Thanks.
