Film Schools, worldwide

Hey

I'd like to do a third-level course in filmmaking; a course that would allow you to sample the different aspects of the craft, but most importantly screenwriting, directing, and cinematography.

Which are the best film schools?

Has anyone been to one that they would either recommend or discredit?

I live in Ireland at the moment but I would like to go elsewhere.

I have been storyboarding for the Florida State University Film School for 2 years now and I can personally say that it is one of the best Film Schools you could hope to get into. I know a lot of people that have made terriffic films including two that i storyboarded that won Emmy Awards. They are ranked among the best every year and the student films are usually in the top 3 if not winning at most film festivals they enter. I actually did a lot of research on them when i was in high school and i applied, but I missed the cut by 2 people. The thing is that they only accept 30 students each year. So I guess being number 32 wasn't so bad. Pissed me off when a guy from my same highschool got in that had a lower GPA and was less qualified, but his mommy knew some one in the department. He then failed out of school not even making it through the first year. A big draw to the school is that the department pays for EVERYTHING the students do. they get relatively large budgets for thier films and they have access to all the equipment you could imagine. Each student experiences all the various roles from everything from a lowly grip to the high and mighty writer and director. worth looking into. (oh and tuition in Florida is pretty cheap)

I'm not a film major, but from what I hear University of Southern California and NY University are considered towards the top.

my friend just applied to the top film schools in the US. he applied to:

usc
ucla
nyu

and also chapman university in orange county and one in miami.
