I don't really keep up with the techno genre of music, but tend to like the more 'epic', i would say, sounding stuff. Paul Oakenfold sometimes (especially his "Silence" remix with sarah maclachlin), Darude Sandstorm, stuff like that. Anyone have any suggestions for other techno (is progressive the name for this type?) that falls into this category? Thanks!

I think "trans" might be the word you're looking for. I love techno, especially dance and whatnot. Love ocremix and what they've done with classic themes like "shadowgate" and "metroid". <3

You might want to check out "4 string" or "Doboy mix." 4 string is a vocal trance group, and Doboy mix usually contains many European vocal trance songs. If you have Itunes for your computer, you can learn names of artists just by listening to online radio. Its a great resource.

Me and my girl are really big into different types of this genre including trance, drum and bass, progressive, lounge, etc.
For the most epic music look for their live mixes as opposed to their CD releases which tend to be more commercial and put together. Live mixes can be quite incredible, especially from the larger events and on big dates like New Years.Too many good artists to list but more epic ones include.
DJ Tiesto
Sander Kleinenburg
Markus Schulz
Armin Van Buuren
Blank & Jones
Paul Van Dyk
Gabriel & Dresden
George Acosta
Rank 1
BT
Chicane
Mars & Mystre
etc

Sup. I actually DJ in some clubs in Shibuya sometimes, mostly trance. I like the epic stuff as well. A song that kills them at the club everytime when I spin it is Paul Van Dyk`s song Crush. Gets em on the floor everytime a little older now but its a definate instant classic. I can go through some records tommorro I have and name a few more.

A couple more artists that haven't been mentioned yet that you'd probably like;
Sasha
ATB
Junkie XL
Ferry Corsten
If you have iTunes I recommend checking out Frisky Radio and EDR club tech. Both of them usually have some pretty decent sets playing.

thanks for the suggestions guys. I checked some of them out, but (unless Im just missing a particular song) it's not quite what Im looking for. These guys seem to have some good beats and that trancey sort of feel, but Im looking for songs that increase in intensity over the course of the song. a lot of TOOL songs have this progressive structure. Oakenfold's "Silence" with maclachlin seems to be one of the best examples i can find in techno of this. Does this ring any more bells for you guys as to some other people to check out?
There was one techno song I heard on the radio back in college (2-3 ish years ago) that sounded good, but i dont really remember how it went or who it was. Any suggestions for some techno that would have been on the radio at that time? thanks.

Most trance songs don't have a steady increase through the whole song, there are usually increases and lulls throughout the song with various buildups in between. I don't know who TOOL is so i can't compare.
I'll see if i have anything that fits your description when i get home.

Oracrest...you might also like some psytrance/goa...in particular try Hallucinogen's "The Lone Deranger" and Man With No Names "Earth Moving the Sun"
Might not be exactly what you're looking for, psytrance certainly doesn't appeal to everyone, but a few of the tracks have a sort of epic building of their own. Worth a shot. :)

Is the DEMF still going on there in Detroit? Last I heard, they had changed the name of the event... but for people who don't know, it is one of the largest, if not best FREE techno parties on the planet there. The organizers in Detroit really do know how to put on a great techno event. I loved it the one year I went there.
