Hi all
'Oh No! The horror! Yet another one of the members sketchbooks... selfpromoting bastards..'
you might think... :)
and yeah... I guess it is. But I really like those threads. They give an insight in how our fellow artists think and draw.. much more than the final and polished paintings do. So I for one can't get enough of those threads.
Another reason for me to start a thread of this kind is to kick myself in the b***. For the last couple of months my motivation has been really low. And I haven't really been outputting the amount of art which I usually do. I'm hoping this thread can get the old machine up and pumping again. And I think it can!
I probably won't be able to upload sketches during the weekends so I'm limiting myself to min. 5 sketches a week. Most of them will be line work, but there might be a few painted sketches in between... Who knows ;)
oh, I don't expect comments on every single sketch but ofcause you are more than welcome to leave a say... so don't hold back!
I'm starting off today (or actually last friday) but will throw in a few sketches that most of you haven't seen before even though they are a few months old...
Thanks for looking...

I like the head of the first one out of em all. I though the bottom half was going to look like the guy was jumping or falling. Nice style, and don't forget to update this puppy! :)

I can sense a lot of Mignola influence
thats really cool, i like your drawings, especially the second one, the executioner.
well maybe the pic from friday is too much mignola .... but thats pretty, and the zombie from monday is really great =)
keep up the good work
and i would love to see other experimentations, color work, other styles, etc ... =)

update:
Fozzy - thanks! Glad you like them :)
Cos - Hi m8! Hehe, yeah a few of them are from that b/w thread at sijun.... We sure had fun.. hehe
Jester - hehe... Yeah, that was what I was thinking some would say too...
Iwasink - thank you!
Kyri - hey! :) Glad you like them!
2kre8 - thanks! :)
Snowfly - yeah, there might be some Frank Miller in them, but the heaviest influence for me is Mignola when it comes to line art. Painted art is different and I have other favourite artists who influence me in that field.
Todays sketch.. wohoo.. a painted one! ;) The second in the series... First one was the spiderman if u remember... This is also a concept/sketch for a oilpainting!
cu all tomorrow ;)

Today I suddenly thought about a character I created for a comic way back in 1997. I actually don't remeber what her name was, but she was VERY inspired by Mike Mignolas Hellboy and Tombraider which both were quite big at that time...
I never got around to do finished pages for the book, but I remember doing a few sketches and colored cover samples.
Anyways... It was fun drawing her again... :)

I like that batman! I just wish there was more definition in his face, the second and third sketch confuse me a bit.

I think what would be good to see from your sketches is a progression away from Mignola's work. Not only are you drawing very similar to him...you use alot of the same themes and images that he does. Things like the tenticals behind the 'tomb raider girl, the decomposed look on the mouth on the zombie, etc. are all styalistic motif's that Mignola uses. I don't really see that you have been influenced by him...but you are copying him.
Try to push your own unique images, themes, line work, and sense of design. Your paintings at your website show that you can do this.

I was unable to do todays sketch, but will try to make two tomorrow...
and...
Boehmke - thanks for being honest. But with the chance of sounding defensive I would say that this is how I draw. Like it or not.. Sometimes the outcome is very mignola-ish like a few of the sketches here and sometimes they are quite away from his style. Like the executioner for example.
The way I paint differs quite alot both in thinking and style from the mignola look, but you could probably find others from whom I have borrowed.... or even copied from as you suggest.
You are not the first one to mention this ofcause... :)

I actually see a big similarity to Clive Barker's ink work. If you haven't seen it before, pick up The Thief Of Always or Abarat. It's cool stuff, I think you'd like it.

Love em all, you convey a kind of evil seedyness really really well. This high contrast stuff packs a nice punch and that greyscale piece is primo too...
