Getting to grips with painter sketches

Another result of my quite futile attempts to get to grips with Painter, rendering and so forth. Just trying to figure out some brushes, maybe somebody has tips? I keep hearing that brushes can be downloaded, but where o where and what are the must-haves?

Well, here goes (I included the reference too that i was loosely trying to copy, It's Samuel Jackson in some movie)

Ok, it's not a good copy, but that wasn't the true goal of the exercise either... (i wish)

I added a more 'sketch' kind of thing, it's a wasp's head or a helmet in wasp's head shape.

There are some nice sketches there...well..samuel is pretty good..but check out the upper lip area again...it seems like its hanged down. Put some more contrast to the neck area and some other grey places it will pop out the image better. The helmet should get some highlights too i guess...isn't it? it will be more brighter and shiny that way...
the second one is cool too erik. Cleaner hatches will make it suberb :) ...keep it up! you're doing really well!!

Thanx for the encouragement Atmospheria! Exactly what i need to keep trying!

I agree on the upper lip area, it's definitely off. I find it difficult to change it however without creating a mess ... :( More practice i guess... Also i can see what you mean with the environment -- more texture would be nice.

Well, i'll try to add something more later on!

Another one, now a quick one. It's a bit blotchy but i tried to get a backlight shadowing on the figure.

nice coloring
