i remember a quote from the loomis books that i quite like "draw while you think, think while you draw"
instead of staring at a blank piece of paper, just keep the pencil moving and see what comes out. failing that theres always anatomy, perspective studies e.t.c

What about trying to work with another material, like steel wire just playing around with it, then just looking at it. Trying to draw a figure you can see in what you've done. Otherwise it's just a good way to be constructiv ;)

Try and combine it with doing something fun, like music as these guys said. Normally if I want to draw a portrait, i'll watch a DVD, then pause when a character looks good enough to draw. That way it's something even lazy people like me can do.

that same problem happens to me... its depressing i know.
but the one thing that can get you out of it is to draw. even if its somthing tedious like anatomy, or gesture drawing, you have to get your mind into the zone. thats what warm ups are for, if you just went straight to drawing, nothing good would come out.
try doing some pure contour drawings of your hand, bag, foot, wrinkled paper, anything. then you'll get into the drawing mode.
also, its hard to just draw from nothing, you have to have at least an idea. BUT sometimes that idea gets created in the process of putting down the graphite. You draw a curve "hey it looks like a head" then you draw some more "ooo it looks like my brother getting and F on a report and me pointing and laughing." The idea starts to grow out of that one line.
and like the cliche (albiet true) says, draw till your fingers are bloody nubs.

the easiest and most exciting technique is really to draw something
like lines and curves just some sillouettes if you want to call it so.
It is creepy but i see things which could be described by these few curves
.. you never know what to draw
look at my sketchbook... not the best.. but the last ones are done these way...
Xaya
... not a bullet proof solution but give it a try

no, no, Xaya, i think the random, curves and lines, is really fun, as a matter of fact i do that ALL the time, (very very similar to the one where the guys leg becomes the womans neck :confident ) exept mines are a bit more abstract
but thanks alot, and your sketch book is great, keep it up

no i donīt mean really this "decoration" curves..
i draw very tight curves on the paper...
usually i see a head in a clearly direction
i work it out a bit and go down to the other parts of the body
i looked through your sketchbook...
you copy photos quite good (although you smear!)
the thing about creating creatures or human being is
first of all knowing how to get volume how to shade and so on
i myself didnīt get it right on the paper although i know it better

I agree with your last post. I think I know what you are talking about when you say bored. But what you are bored with is your ability, and you are not excited by what you are able to draw well at the moment, so you just sit and stare. At least that is what happened to me, so I have found that there are a lot of great people here on CA that will help you out with studies of value, anatomy, etc.
Your absolutely right that once you study and are able to just freely imagine something and draw it with a good degree of accuracey from your mind, you will most likely find it rewarding and exciting. It takes lots of work to get there, so the trick is to adjust your mentality right now to feel good about doing studies, put your heart into them and don't get frustrated about a drawing not looking good... it's an opportunity to stop, observe what is wrong, develop a strategy for correcting it and DRAW IT AGAIN!! :D Good luck!

We share the same traits, (i hope i spelt it right, which i didn't)
I've been having this problem for sometime now, woo gets stupid.
Heres wat i do, i collect tons of pics offa this site and others, put them in a file strictly called inspiration, from all you SPLENDED artists out there, and just go thru them till i find one that looks like something i wanna draw, i don't copy them, lets just get that outta the way, i HATE copying, rather it be my own, but i guess that doesn't count if its refence, blah blah. I have 590 pics in my folder so far hehe.
Its a great way to help with the boredom/arty blocky type trauma.
Hope this helps even a little.
PS saw ya update, great pics! really good at potraits

I have a few folders of refrence from other artists as well (french artists rule!) I also have some folders of photo refrence Ive collected from magazines. After im done looking through that I throw on some music and all those annoying little voices in my head shut right up...then I start to draw and usually I get into the zone after about 40 min. Once youre past that, you can draw for hours at a time =)

OMG, THAT is like the BEST idea ever, man :}
i wish i'd thought of that earlier, >:D
soul:clild yepper, i hate copying other peoples work as well, i like to copy ppls faces; to do a portrait,or for reference, but i dont like copying other's work. :)
well i guess i only like doing portraits, but by collecting other artists styles, i can combine them with my own and come up with somthing interesting and new, **man, i love this thread: im getting inspired already LOL**:D

i also find that i can only use one medium......pencil
oils can be a pain the arse to find, (especially in fife) price-wise aswell,
chalks and charcoals are good too, but a wee bit more difficult.
the only mediums i use, is paper and pencils >:|
