hey, this is a great start you've got, i especially like the value shapes that are going on this last image of the cloth...your anatomy all looks pretty good, i really like how clean all the contours are on the arms also. they maintain form rather than flattening out. keep em coming

Cburt: thanks alot! I've been trying to learn how value breaks into large shapes. still not there yet but thats what this sketchbook is all about for me...well, and other stuff too! thanks for looking
Mainloop: I completely agree with what your saying with my proportions. It seems that sometimes i get caught up in details early on rather than the overall. I love your stuff by the way I've been very inspired to pick up a paitbrush on a few occasions!
sideshowbob: nice name, adn your a hendrix fan! i had to post that sketch of him on my first post. Thanks about the line comment I try to see if im able to pull off bare lines with no value and see how it holds up. sometimes it works and sometimes it don't.
PHATandy: thanks i ghope to get some finished pieces up soon Crits always welcome!
Thanks again peace to the middle east and chicken grease

Great drawings,
very accurate in form and shading...
the only thing i could mention is that you
donīt use the whole ability of your pencil
- means that you donīt get too dark just around dark gray -
and... perhabs donīt go with a solid outline of your characters...
just some thoughts
More please!

Cheers all! heres a new update. Thanks for looking. almost rid of my old shit. By the way how do i change the title to my thread?
HEROIC- thanks man i try to keep the gesture drawings part of the finished piece. With some parts fully rendered and others not as developed, it gives a certian kind of texture to the paintings....
Warhead82- thanks man
purb36- HOLLAAAAAAAA! lol
Xaya-- thanks, i was looking at what you said and i think your completely right. I dotn fully use the value range of the pencil. The solid outline comes from always drawign comic books....but i'm tryign to break out of that and learn to use my edges to my advantage. Until then I'll have to keep udating.

thanks cburt! I was in a crayon drawign class actually last semester. The first one with me in bed is with crappy ole crayola, the 2nd one is with caran d'ache crayons. Theyre kind of expensive but once you start laying down color they build up so nice! try it out with your rendering skills you should be an expert in no time!

thats a really nicce figure, i like how you handled the tattoo on her upper thigh, its very natural looking but i think it could still use a couple tiny dark spots just to ground it because its looking a little bit floaty as it stands now. the anatomy looks pretty accurate and the rendering is super nice...i just think a few more dark shapes could really pop this piece out...i also wanted to say that i really like that landscapes page from the 2/11 post, the shapes you used for the rocks and clouds are awesome
keep em up

Alexandertheduk: thanks man which one are you talking about when it gets crazy and sh*t? thats funny as hell.
cburt: thanks for the crit i agree on the dark spots. I seem to be having trouble with getting really dark. I always had a "heavy hand" so i had to stay light...cant win! Also i find drawing tatoos are difficult because they always seem likthere floating on the surface.

what up peoples! thanks for the stopping by. C+C welcome.
dCepT: Thanks bro! I'm trying to get to that "unattainable" level you know? what a bumpy ride tho!
TASart: Dude! i was just looking at your stuff! you have some tight work there and it is actually one of my inspirations on this site. Thanks for stopping by.
sideshowbob: thanks sideshow, your the man! I use whatever is laying around really...the earlier stuff was a 2h so i could make my lines become lighter. I always had a heavy hand that got too cark too fast. But the latter is all HB
Imageproof: Thanks!
Ok. I havent painted with oil in 3 years so here goes nothing. This is something i did last friday night in like 3 hours...very frustrating, but i feel all the practice with pencil drawing has carred over into seeing color and applying paint! who wouldve thought.. sorry the pic is way too blurry...damn camera shake!

Lookin' good! Definately diggin' on the Jimi Hendrix portrait!
One crit though: His right eye (our left) looks a little off. His left eye follows the slope of the face, but his right seems to be on a different plane. Push it back a bit. Love the rendering though! Great job!

Yay oil paintings! Great hands. I know it's just a study, but you might want to think a bit about your figure/ground relationship--your middle tones are running into the background. But the form is great (the subtleties of the veining on the top of the hand is really effective). I think the one on the top right is very nice, because the darker shadow areas make the rest of the form pop right out.

thanks everybody for all the comments
-j- : thanks man my HW was to capture the form of the hand. I feel some are ok and some arent so hot. I'm going to do some more hand studies soon.
Wertle: thanks alot man i appreciate the crit. thats one of the things i was struggling with was color relationships and subtlies. I wasn't really focusing on the figure/ground relationships too much but in the last one where i gave some sort of hint of a ground i felt the hand felt that much more real and tangible.
Jokisalo: thanks man i saw your stuff you got some nice stuff going on! stop back again.
Heres some mo' shizzle. Its a underpainting i did today for some glazing I be doing.

whoa, cool stuff! I especially like that painting you took a picture of... the blue one with a black bg. I'd like to see some more full figure pieces/sketches from you, because from the full figure pieces I see, it looks great! Keep up the anatomy studies, and don't stop drawing! ;)
Wertle
March 8th, 2005, 11:34 PM
That's a great underpainting. The tone is really well defined (especially that one cast shadow made by the one pear onto the other), it should make the rest of the painting go easily. It's nice to see the process shots, too (as my fatal flaw is never putting much effort into underpaintings, I would have stopped way before even having it as refined as you do in the early stage ^_^ Gah! Where can I get some patience?)
Rich Pellegrino
March 9th, 2005, 06:27 PM
Odds: Yeah anatomy studies are always helpful, I've been really focusing on painting individual parts.
Wertle: haha when you find some patience let me know, cause i need some! thanks this glazing is kinda new to me. I've done it once before but i think i did it wrong... hope i dont ruin it!

hayy! yeah, that really looks like his painting. :)
atleast the pen sketch at the top right does. it's hard to get the same effect as he does with only black and white, isn't it? these paintings are also looking very promising, seems like you've been studying color and how chroma instead of value can also depict form. keep it up, man! oh, and keep working on smooth, flowing lines. :)
