There are games you like, then theres games that shine for you. List some of the games that when you think back to a particular system or time, they were "it", not just in terms of the blockbuster games at the time, but the ones that you REALLY loved personally. The ones that felt they were the upper eschelon. Heres my avalanche of nostalgia:

NES
Shadowgate (made me scared to go into dark rooms late at night)
Deja Vu
Willow (movie liscensing at it's finest. yes, including todays games....)
Goonies 2
Pirates! :pirate:
Castlevania 2 (great exploration. The series really expiremented early on with different gameplay mechanics)

Castlevania 3
Zanac (this game never ended! gotta give props to my first game ever)
Metal Gear (wow. this game rocked. Even though it was a stripped down version from the one that was released in Japan, it was still awesome)

The Legend of Zelda

SNES
Super Metroid (most favoritist game. ever.)
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (2D gaming at it's finest. Epic, expansive. just plain awesome. Some movies suck and you lament that you just wasted 2 hours of your life. This game sucked two weeks of my life, but I wouldn't trade it for anything)

Super Mario World
Final Fantasy 2 (The height of the series for me)
Chrono Trigger (would someone pease make a TRUE sequel to this game...?)
Secret of Mana (again, true sequel please......)

PLAYSTATION
Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain (this game is the Godfather of the kain series. One of the best mood setters I have played so far. Its a shame the rest of the series has yet to come close to this marvel. I think Symphony of the night borrowed a few mechanics from this one....)

Silent Hill (Brought me back to the shadowgate days of being afraid of the dark. IMO the best in the series by a longshot. Probably cause it did what it did first)

Metal Gear Solid (ya, I know, typical, but a truly magnanimous game)

Castlevania Symphony of the Night (a game I often contemplate buying another copy of, "just in case")

Tenchu (your a ninja, you kill from the shadows. Why it took gaming this long to make this game is a mystery to me)

Playstation 2
Rez (way ahead of it's time. I hear of a rerelease somewhere down the road...?)

Ico (big huge castle. You and this girl. Have fun!)

Metal Gear Solid 3 (simply great. I want a bumper sticker that reads "I would rather be playing Metal Gear Solid 3")

Gamecube
Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (2nd most favoritist game ever)
Metroid Prime (A+ retro. Ill admit I was a non believer.....)

XBox
Breakdown (amazing that when I think of all my xbox games, this ones comes to mind first. Badly reviewed, and even badly recieved i think, But i couldn't help but admire the level of immersion they were going for. If you can get past some gameplay issues, theres some really good scripted story elements to be had. I think maybe budget, and the unwillingness of FPS fans to try something other than point and shoot kept this one from being really big)

well, can't wait to hear your guys lists.........

Ooh, Suikoden 1 should be on my list as well. I loved the whole castle building aspect of it. And how it managed to combine rpg battles, castle construction and mass war into a fairly tight system. gaining an additional NPC not only provided you with another person to put in your immediate party, but possibly added on to your castle, and provided something to the army battles (I loved sending the ninja over to see what the enemy army was going to do next) I think they tried to reinvent the whole army battle later into more of a turn based unit thing, but I loved the simplicity of the original system.

-Knights: Into Dreams ---
Completely POUNDS the whole concept of Sonic into the ground with what it should've been, at the same time it adds *gasps* .gameplay.

-Boktai I and II ---
Kojima might not have been onto a new 'industry standard' with the whole light sensor, but it certainly is a great element for an emmersive universe. Every bit as robust as the best GBA games, the closest thing you can get to a handheld Metal Gear, and ... well, it's just plain cool to drag a KO'ed boss in his coffin outside (litterally!) into the sun to finish him off.

-REZ ---
Oracrest, you're right ... A game so WAY ahead of its time, that the heads of SEGA approached the Director (of REZ) and told him that he couldn't make another game as 'creative' and unique as REZ ... Basically that audiences aren't ready for it...
It might only be 2 hours long at most, but it's always great fun to pop it out at a party .... even the Japanese version came with EYEDROPS!

-Kirby: The Amazing Mirror --- The most non-liniar game I can think of since the origional zelda .... It takes the concept of a Metroid like labyrinth, tripples its size ..... and doesn't give you any clues.
When you hook up 4 players, you ALL get to explore the labyrinth in realtime at your own leasure ... and you have a handy cell-phone to teleport to eachothers' aid!
I can see a lot of people becoming frustrated by how huge it is, but it's worth it at the end when you have a free-room of EVERY Kirby ability in the series.

-Beyond Good and Evil ---
One of those games you play, and start to realize that so few people will experience how awesome it is...
One of the most cenematic games I've ever played and one of the first games to give NPC's true character, presence, and worth... It's an adventure up there with any Zelda and competes with it on many levels.

-Zelda: Link's Awakening ---
I'm experiencing this one for the first time as we speak ... And honestly, it's one of the best if not THE best handheld zelda game.

-Mario & Luigi ---
Some of the most fun I've ever had in an RPG .... certainly my favorite of the Mario RPG / Paper Mario franchise, and without doubt the best written.
I don't think I've ever laughed so much with a game.

-Ace Combat IV ---
The ONLY compelling story I've ever experienced in a videogame... The gameplay is traditional Ace Combat sim/arcade ... but the story (told through amazing watercolor paints) hints at how games can be their own medium when it comes to narratives..
I rented it when it first came out ... and I rented it 4 times after that, just to see what would happen to the little boy.

-Animal Crossing ---
... If you have to ask .... You'll never know ...
Without doubt the most unique experience I've ever had in gaming ... talk about a game that OWNS YOU.
I've lost many a friend because of Animal Crossing's unique stresses, I've also made just as many.

-Panzer Dragoon Franchise ---
The game that exposed me to what Art Direction and Concept Design is ... The game that made me want to make games.

-Ikaruga ---
Seemingly a simple shooter at first, but then it expands to something you can't quite put your finger on...
The best mix of 'tough-as-nails' shooter with the brain-stressing elements of tetris-like puzzel games.

-Cubivore ---
Have fun evolving with (what some would consider) the worst display of graphix this generation :dur:
A strange an unique world, where you eat things and evolve by gaining more 'cube-flaps' ... then mate and start new as one of the offspring.

-ICO ---
yep... awesome.
no dialogue, no music, no weapons beyond a stick, no settings other than a castle, no life bar, no map, no etc.
but 20 times more deep that your biggest, multimillion dollar, EA blockbuster release.
less is truely more.

-Metroid Fusion ---
The black sheep of the Metroid franchise, and certainly the most liniear .... but I'll be damned if it's not the best display of 2d storytelling ever.

-Jumping Flash I and II ---
hrmmm... a first person platform adventure? How does that work?
Check it out, and you'll see where Metroid Prime found its roots.

-Starcraft ---
Can't forget that ... spent a good 3 years on that fucker.

that's all I can think of at the moment

NES.

Contra was like... THE cool game when I was a kid, used to play it at everyone's house. Super mario bros. 3 was a huge deal to me as far as single player games go.... the racoon outfit and all of that... so classic. Bubble Bobble was the great multiplayer game that I used to play at a friends house everyday after school... my sister STILL plays bubble bobble with her friends. Guerilla war was also a great coop game.. I loved it more than Contra, but it wasn't as mainstream.

SNES.

Final Fantasy 6.. played thru it with my cousin.. almost nonstop, it had the 2 player option where a second player could control some of the characters... of course my cousin always stuck me with the boring characters while he took the cool ones and sabin (I always messed up the blitz anyway). Starfox was huge... very memorable... first seemingly 3d game, I loved that. Zelda: link to the past... still my favorite zelda game ever, I associate it with the smell of warm pretzels to this day. I also have fond memories of UN squadron... which was my favorite side-scroller. And of course, street fighter 2 and mortal kombat were a big deal back then.

Etc.

Final fantasy 7 was a huge ass deal.. so of course that's gonna be memorable. I'm too lazy to start listing all the RPGs and recent stuff. Metal Gear Solid games had a huge impact. Phantasy Star Online made a huge dent in my life. And Jet set radio future is a personal favorite, and has always affected my art. I'm still sad there won't be any more jet set radio games... best franchise. I must revive it one day.

good list sinix! bubble bobble has something magical about. It was one of the only games my last girlfriend would play with me. she always laughed when the dragon got hit by a lightning bolt, and made that wierd face >:D

I managed to find the sequel at a flea market, and paid through the nose for it, but was SOOOO dissapointed when we popped it in, and they scrapped the old coop 2 player for a "one player at a time" race to the end.

BTW, good sketchbook. you can't beat Nazi Zombie samurai!

I'm just gonna list the games I, well, maybe not absolutely love, but certainly feel nostalgic about for the C64-Vic20. Me and my friend played these games on a tiny B/W TV with a very fuzzy picture.

Zig Zag - Strange, I remember this game having awesome skyscrapers full of details, but now when I played the emu version it's just boxes. Zig Zag was an exploration game so I kinda liked it.

Who dares wins, commando, rambo - We played the one where you could rescue 'about to be executed' prisoners the most.

Commando Libya - Sadism game of the year!!!

Bop'n rumble - Hulk Hogan fighting senior citizens.

Chopplifter - I think this was the game. The TV made it look like the little men on the ground had long waving hair, but it was just TV pixels fading slowly. I've always liked games with tiny men running around.

Druid - Never got that far... but it somehow gave me the same feeling as Zelda.

Zeppelin - Exploration game I didn't get a chance to play enough.

Moon Buggy - Nice to toy around with.

I'm sure I forgot a few.

Great C64 games I found out too late about are, Bruce Lee, Exile, Paradroid, Impossible mission. I also played the amiga versions of some games like IK+, Barbarian, Paradroid 90, Elite II, Wings of Fury but that's another story.

I'm a fan of anything that came out for the Amiga, especially Lionheart. Great game!

I'm also a serious Half-Life/HL2 fan. Oh yeah.

Let's not forget those 80s arcade games: Asteroids, Centipede, Tempest....

But the greatest game ever made has to be Pong. Simple, elegant...it's like a Buddhist monk designed that game. :)

You don't need it. Use the Shovel to counter the blasts. I am being totally serious.

Ah, for me...

Metroid II: Return of Samus
-The biggest nostalgia title of my life. Back when I didn't have a GameBoy I would play this at my cousin's house and love it even though I had no idea what I was doing. After seeing a copy at a Gamestop years and years later I snatched it up and then I got to relive all those memories. The music in particular sticks very vividly in my mind. Apart from all of these things, MII is unquestionably the finest title on the original GameBoy. An improvement on the original Metroid in every way, this game was immersive to play through, more varied and realistic in the composition of its environments than the first one, with better control (possibly the best control on the original Gameboy) and wonderful graphics to blaze across that dark green-and-white screen.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
-Another big nostalgia title, I still get chills when I hear go through the opening sequence in my GBA port of the old SNES masterpiece. One of the best video games ever made without question.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
-I have finally settled into the school of thought that believes that this game surpassed A Link to the Past. Everything about it seems to contribute tot he same overarcing effect, and the clear-cut use of archetype as definition of the story elements was very well done. Even though it conveys a different feeling than the older title, I am still inclined to give this game the tip of the hat. The application of Navi as a personification of the protagonist's attention for the adaptation to 3D is, in my opinion, the most brilliant and innovative gameplay element in the history of electronic gaming.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
-Superior to the first Nintendo 64 Zelda title in many ways, most of which involve gameplay. There just isn't better fun to be had on the N64 than Majora's Mask. While Ocarina of Time is still the finer game because of its superior artistic quality, I must say that I like playing Majora's Mask more.

Super Smash Bros Melee
-This is my game of choice, and the one that I've chosen to hone my skills on to the elite level. The elite metagame of SSBM is unmatched, and the level to which the gameplay can deepen is astounding. Everyone should take a serious look at this game and watcfh some elite match videos before shrugging it off.

hey, why not provide an explanation for what you loved about a certain game. I find the lists interesting, but Im also interested in what you personally took from it. A lot of times it's cool to hear someone explain what they liked about a game, and you realize you both love a particular one, but for totally different reasons.

For PC, my personal gems were Lands of Lore, Legend of Kyrandia, Legend of Kyrandia 2, Monkey Island, and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.

Kyrandia and lands of lore were both made by westwood studios, a company that carried some of the best art of its day (before those horrible early years of 3D art.)

The lucasarts games had good art as well, and very good story. the multilinearity of Fate of Atlantis was really cool. They took the adventure game, by far the most linear of game designs, and incorporated different paths and choices that had a large impact on the course of the game.

FF7 - The mood, story, visuals, effects, music, customizability of the materia system just makes it a wonderful experience for me.

FF Tactics - I love customizability! I can just keep on playing this, trying out all the different job and skill combos and unexpected results. (FFT Advance doesn't even come close)

Front Mission 3 - Customizability. Giant robots. Virtual Internet. Gold-digging singaporean cutie. What more can you ask for?

Suikoden 2 - Castle building, 108 charas, uber crazy main villian, and that hilarious cooking side story. (Cooking, as in recipes and such)

Suikoden 3 - No more cooking side story. But I love their characters, their designs and personality, and their sometimes silly but amusing banter. The opening animation and music is also magnificient.

MGS - It's the boss battles that does it for me. Damn frustrating bosses, but oh-so-rewarding when you beat them!

Ico - Gorgeousness x 10. Great level designs. Interesting puzzles. A very charming game.

Xenogears - Omg the music. Also love the story and the characters and their relationships. And giant robots!

Xenosaga - Intriguing. And very ambitious. Lovely concepts and visuals. Omg the music.

Xenon 2 - Played in the years when I was starving for games. Excellent bitmap graphics by the bitmap brothers for its time.

Archon - *cough* yeah, archon.

Myself, I abused a megadrive at home and played loads of other at my friends houses. These have a special place in my heart:

Pro Wrestling
Sonic the Hedgehog
Leisure Suit Larry
Police Quest
Shining Force
A Link to the past
Altered Beast
Flashback

These won my slightly more adult heart (with a little help from the emulation tech):
Tales of Phantasia
Chrono Trigger
Morrowind
Beyond Good and Evil
Viewtiful Joe

Basically, I adored every quest game, the Megadrive was to cool, and french people really know how to make great games.

Right on brother! I was all about some kyrandia when I was younger. The best art in an adventure series IMO (well, the first two any ways, third had that horrid early 3d look sometimes). I was going through some old stuff this weekend, and came across my old Kyrandia 1 poster that came with the game. Totally gonna frame that bad boy. I wish they would make another in the series, but have the original team all together. Now that Westwood is owned by EA, im sure nothing like that will ever happen (marketing shows only command and conquer generates maximum profit, blah, blah, blah.)

if you still have the old cd's, there are some pretty good emulators out there that let you play those old 3.1 win games. I managed to get the first kyrandia up and running several months back. You may already know how to do this, but if not, its worth dusting off those old discs, and playing through them again

DOSbox was one
, and another, the one I played kyrandia with, was something like VMSound, or something like that. I think that emulator specialized in having the sound of the old games work ok. And SCUMMVM for all the old lucasarts adventure games.

I remember very vividly seeing the arcade machine Contra and being amazed at the graphics. I loved that game.

I also loved Jet Motto. Thats one of my all time favorites.

One I remember because it sucked so incredibly bad was ET for the original Atari. Did anyone even know how to play that stupid game? You basically just ran around alot.

Oh, I forgot one, Blaster Master for the Genesis. That game was awesome. The Genesis had alot of great games for its time.

Dig Dug-- just because it was one of the first video games I played. It wasn't any great marvel of technology but it sure was fun. I must have spent a small fortune playing that game. :[
