I've been meaning to start one of these for a while now, but something's always got in the way (lack of a decent scanner, uni work, etc.) I've got to the point though that I seem to be drawing enough to keep one going, so I'll give it a try and see how things go.
Anyway, here's the start of it. Some skeletal studies done from medical books yesterday/today. First one in pencil, second using PITT pen. Hoping to work on anatomy a bit more now

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/David-Morning/Sketchbook/2.jpg
And some animal sketches from photos found at http://www.osf.co.uk. Both in ink

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v101/Kitsuken/Studies/wolves.jpg
Anyway, if anyone has any advice they'd like to give I'd appreciate it :)

weeelc00mmeeeee O_O
what u studying at uni ?where u from ? yur age? size of shoe ? :^^:
the bone studies looking good..
the bone doctor knows some good anatomy tips 4 sure
i love the animal sketches.. shading technique is nice.. looking good <3
the wolf too..
really like to see some more .. /m\
advices : do some perspective studies.. perspective helpt to draw evrything.. we trie to draw volumetrical objects.. no flat stuff..and these things are 3Dimensionaly... objects.. a cube is simple 3d volume..simple to draw.. but it contains all drawing rules..
try to draw some cubes and or cylinders and rotate them in space*3D orbit
think about
::: symmetrie
::: perspective
:::vanishing points
::: dynamic
::: foreshortening
another important hting is : to see 3D u have to be aware of 3d space in ur head.. otherwise u cant draw it.. kids or babys cant do any of this.. because its a process they need to learn it.. just like we do :D
its just like.. "u can draw evryting inside a cube".. the cube shows and indicates the perspective and its flow.. thats what u need to be aware of.. and drawing is no big problem .. i made a lil crapy tutorial about perspective.. link is in my sketchbook (search for "tutorial") .. enjoy browsing :)
post some more stuff pls :D

-sideshowbob-: Age 19, studying Computing Science, Maths and History of Art (sadly the uni doesn't offer any practical art subjects) and from the UK :p
I know what you mean about trying to think of things in 3D, I've started trying to think of it more when I'm drawing now.
The animal drawings are an attempt ( ) to find a good sketching method I can use with animals. Most of what I do is wildlife (one of the reasons I haven't uploaded often here) and I want to be able to work from sketches I do rather than always looking up pictures to paint from. Glda you like them :)
darkos: Glad you like. The first ones were hyenas, probably should have mentioned since they're not as familiar to most people as wolves or lions :p
I'll have some stuff to add later tonight after life drawing class. I've got some just now, but I'd rather just wait and upload the stuff in one block instead of bits and pieces

Heres the life drawing images in order of when they were done. there were some 2 minute sketches on the first page too, but they haven't scanned too well

Skeletal studies done in Borders
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/David-Morning/Sketchbook/dcfba1d1.jpg
and a page of perspective work done on the train on the way home (hence why some are off and some scribbled out)

Life drawing class was interesting today, since the model didn't seem to e able to hold poses for long without fidgeting or having to stretch. Still, it's something you just have to get used to I guess

Didn't do anywhere *near* enough studies this week. Anyway, here's what I got
One skeletal study. I'm working on the rib cage a bit at a time now, then I'm going to work on the limbs. That way I have something to link everything too
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/David-Morning/Sketchbook/1284c70b.jpg
And the life drawings, most of which were cropped because of being too close to the edge
10 minute warmup sketch
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/David-Morning/Sketchbook/d260832e.jpg
Ink sketches, trying to work on defining form with them. Made a bit of progress with the second one
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/David-Morning/Sketchbook/62a3faed.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/David-Morning/Sketchbook/e8e5d88a.jpg
Pastel sketch
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/David-Morning/Sketchbook/ea9eb059.jpg
And a portrait done in charcoal. Started to get some depth to this image, but ran out of time before finishing

Anyway, as always helpful tips would be appreciated. I'l try and get more done this week

Keep going with this , your foundations are very strong!
One thing I noticed, I can't put my finger on it, but the wolves seem a little... off... Other than that, good job!

You have some really good studies going on!
My advice for you is to DRAW until your hand bleeds and your pencil has burned into ash
Keep it up, you´re doing great.

This is gonna go on to become a colour study, but I wanted to get a copy of it uploaded. Anyone with any crits feeel free to mention them (I wont make the changes here, but future pieces I'll keep them in mind)
I'll have a few other things to upload soon, including the painted version of this

Hey Dude,
Your Shat looks like its coming along nicely Let me tell you what I like and what I dont like and I hope you dont hate me at the end. Let's establish first and foremost that I think you are a good artist and that you got some natural talent with that rendering . I like the fact that your doing figure drawing I also like that fact that your studying anatomy I'm doing both as well. Okay things I didnt like. I'm guessing you draw on small pads If you are I think you should go alot bigger this helps in so many ways for example you use more of your arm and your lines will look alot more confident. Aslo I'm saying this because alot of your pictures get cut off either that of you should mark cut off lines on your pad and really start concidering scale. I think you have a natural talent for rendering but I dont think you should concider the priority in finishing the entire drawing with all the important lines before begining to render. Sometimes you dont even draw the head but have a fully rendered model. I recomend a book called "natural way to draw" really great book. There's no doubt in my mind that your a great artist and getting better I just hope my words help you there faster or remind you of what you arleady know. Aside all this criticism I wouldnt bother if i didnt think you had potential in your drawings.

Klinesmoker: The face on head is skewed, that's probably what you're noticing. I noticed it after finishing, but couldn't do anything about it since it was ink.
Phantom: Dont you mean pen? ;)
Alexandertheduk: Dont worry, I dont hate you for giving constructive crits :p It's helpful findingout what problems I haven't noticed, so I appreciate people pointing them out. Anyway, I'll try and respond to what you've said
Large pads: I do in fact own an A3 pad which I use fairly regularly (I've got it set up next to my computer screen so I can sketch from images online) Sadly, what I *don't* have is a way of uploading these to the computer. I usually sketch these in an A4 pad, although theres a few A5 ones from the sketchbook I use travelling to and from uni.
Cut-offs: Yep, you've hit the nail on the head. I have a big problem making estimates to the size of a picture before sketching it. Usually by the time I find out 3/4 of the time is gne and I dont have time to redraw it, so I leave it as-is. I'll try and work on this from now on
Heads: ohboy :nohope: OK, yeah, you got me there. I really struggle with sketching heads. I can do rendered ones, although they tend to take me a while, but not sketched. I'm trying to work on this though, hopefully there'll be some improvement on this soon.
Half-rendered: Usually this is because I finish doing a line picture with 5 or 10 mins left, so I start doing rendering. As mentioned above, I have trouble rendering faces in short time periods, so they usually get left till the end, the result being that I run out of time before I get to them. The exception to this is the ink ones. The bodies on them are rendered because I want to try and work on defining form in ink, so I use the larger forms of arms, legs and torsos to practice it. I'll have some with heads too soon, I just want to improve on it on a larger scale before going small.
Anyway, thanks a lot for the in-depth crits, I'll make sure to work on the things you mentioned from now on (especially the heads) :)

First of all, sorry I haven't been updating. There's been a lot going on in RL and I haven't gotten round to updating, although I have still been drawing.
Secondly I wanted to ask for some advice. I'm hoping to go on and do a course in computer games development either next year or the year after, and I need to know, what would make good material for a portfolio? Should I cover doing character designs? Enviromental studies? 3D modeling? Life drawing? I'm just wondering if there's anything specific people would look for for a course like this or if I should just do a general portfolio and do my best with that.
Thanks for your help everyone. Updates will start up again soom, I promise

OK, here's the update I promised.
first the life drawings for the past 3 weeks (damn, was it really that long?)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/David-Morning/Sketchbook/3-2.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/David-Morning/Sketchbook/3-4.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/David-Morning/Sketchbook/3-5.jpg
Some studies from photographs
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/David-Morning/Sketchbook/3-6.jpg
A quick sketch in a cafe (I've got a lot of these, but this one was in a different sketchbook and I need to look the other one out)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/David-Morning/Sketchbook/3-7.jpg
And some playing about with poses. Might try and turn the second into a final piece
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/David-Morning/Sketchbook/050315.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/David-Morning/Sketchbook/050315b.jpg
Anyway, hopefully I'll be uploading more regularly now. Had problems with iillness, uni and a couple of other things, but those are over with now so I should be able to make this more regular now.
Oh yeah, and if anyone could help out with the question in the previous post I'd appreciate it a lot. Thanks for looking :)
EDIT: forgot to add this one
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/David-Morning/Sketchbook/cougar_painting.jpg
First cougar painting turned out terrible, so I did another sketch of a cougar and transferred to a canvas. I'm working on this one a bit differently (with more patience for one thing) and it seems to be turning out better, so I'll upload once it's done.

I really like your animal studies and figure drawings. I think the last few life drawings can be a little clearer, I feel like some forms are getting lost or hard to see. Keep it up. Its looking good.

Thanks for the reply aan. Yeah, I was struggling a bit with getting the forms right, it's something I'm gonna work on
More stuff to upload. Got some watercolours in my sketchbook too, just have to get round to uploading them
Meerkat study, trying to get the hang of texturing in painter
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/David-Morning/meer.jpg
Did this one a while back, but had trouble with adding the colours. I'm trying to finish it now in Painter. If anyone has any tips for doing fur in painter I'd appreciate it

I really like the animal studies! Especially the Meerkat. All I can suggest is to keep doing these kinds of studies. Just keep in mind the overall gestures of the subject before getting into specific details and you will be fine. Keep up the good work :teeth:

Thanks Dan, I'll try and keep gestures in mind more in future :)
anyway, heres the watercolour sketches I've been doing the last couple of days. Most dont go above half an hour for a sketch. Also, this is the first time I've used watercolour in a long time, so any advice and/or crits will be appreciated
This one is most recent. It's my second attempt at a landscape background in watercolour
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/David-Morning/Sketchbook/050327.jpg
Really messed up the kid at the lake on the right. Started with dark colours, then ended up going over them with light colours which screwed it up. Hyena isn't much better either though
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/David-Morning/Sketchbook/050326d.jpg
First one where I used a pen to do the sketch (the ones above were pen and watercolour too)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/David-Morning/Sketchbook/050326c.jpg
And these two were the first of the lot. done using a brown pencil as a sketch (sienna, I think) then watercolour over it
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/David-Morning/Sketchbook/050326b.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v219/David-Morning/Sketchbook/050326.jpg
Anywya, as always any crits people can give are appreciated. I should have something different for the next update, as well as more life drawing
