View Full Version : Fred's Sketchbook Thread Part 1 UPDATED FEB 11th

fredflickstone
February 7th, 2005, 03:03 AM
Well, after the last 2 workshops, I have been changing up my work, and my books when I sketch quite a bit. But I am going to start with older stuff too so I can balance it all out, if I post all the new stuff right now, I will have to work too hard to get more going again...heh...I just have a lot of images I can post strting a while back, but getting more creative as I continue to mingle with the Massive Black crew...

Good to be posting again.

Ron

ron, it was awesome to actually get to meet you at the SF workshop, i was only there the last day but my goal was to get to see some of your pieces in person and that small sketchbook you've got was just mind-blowing...seriously, it was incredibly inspiring, esp. for me, someone who mostly works in ballpoint, to see a full pad of ballpoint drawings and great gouache studies. i still can't believe that factory painting copy was so small...you were right what you said about assael's ballpoint drawings too, those things were trippy, totally looked like charcoal drawings. thanks for posting all of these pages in the thread at easy access for all of our viewing pleasure. keep em comin!

This is Insanity! goauche is such a strange animal, you must be insane to pull these off..... incredible. What kind of paper is that in your sketchbooks, I've been looking for some toned paper that can take a beating...or at least hold up to wet media....

You've got some great range, man. While you have a definite style, you cover such a diverse range of topics and techniques that sometimes it doesn't look like it comes from the same person. I love your site, too.

Madman!
February 11th, 2005, 06:04 PM
He Ron I got a question about the animal studies like the stag one, do you know all the muscles and bones like that? I know most animal bones/muscles are the same names as humans, but they are in different placements. Do you have the animals memorized or are these really like studies for you? I'm just curious if you can draw these things because you know them like memorized or because you know value, shapes, etc that allows you to draw anything you want basicly.

Also, the Gollum further up the page is great.

This shit is soooooooooooo cool to see, Ron. Apart from a few illustrations I come accross in my D&D books, I don't often see much from you apart from your figure work and the tutorials you do. It's great to see the diversity of interests you have. Here's a nice study of a harbor, some cowboys, a car, a badass creature with his wicked bird, some factories...and in so many mediums and styles (love the car done completely using lines following the action).

And I'm still utterly in awe of those gouache sketches. I really, REALLY hope you guys offer that class next term in a timeslot I can wrangle.

Ho-ly CRAP.

You are so inspirational. People have mentioned your animal studies already, but really, I just have to mention them one more time because they blow my feeble mind! The muscles! They're so completely accurate and perfect. Looks like you can do anything and have it come out mouthwateringly superb. Did you copy the musculature from a specific anatomy book/reference picture?

Also I love your varied use of materials. Everything's so rich and interesting to look at!
