A couple drawings inspired by Steven Assael --Update Feb 11th

After meeting Steven, I have to say I have been thoroughly inspired to improve my work. Here are a couple newer images I did post Assaelism...thanks for all the inspiration, and helpful talks in San Fran...

after seeing your speed protraying in san fran, those make a big contrast over your known stuff.

Can you talk a bit about your "mind change"? is all about more care in drawing and shading?

Jaku-Mind change...hmmmbefore that, your english is fine. heh...I wasnt seeing the big picture as clearly as I thought I was. By doing these longer renderings I am seeing more, the bigger picture. But not only that. There is a life in that photo, there is an essence to the person that is more than just a simple drawing. That essence, how that person felt, acted, that is important. I dont think I can do a photo justice, if I didnt shoot it, or I took it from a reference source. I dont know the person or the moment, so it doesnt necissarily (sp) help me get around the form, or the persons symmetry, etc. I am guessing.

When we draw at Watts, its all fast stuff. No time to think of the details carefully. That is what I was lacking technically. Steven and my wife have helped me see into the work though and drag out something more than a technically sound painting. If I can put words to that I will let you know what it is...Heh...

I just love that last female you posted. I could learn a lot from that pic.

In the second one, the line quality on the right arm kinda breaks the volume/harmony in my opinion (but you're the pro so who cares what I think).

I just love your drawings, great work. I was just wondering what you used on the last two (especially the one done from life, or were they both), was it charcoal or pencil and what grade hardness/softness did you use. Again, great work.

Thank you very much. They were done with Graphite. From 2h to 2b to 8b. THose three only because of time...

Awesome work...theres alot of depth in these. My fav. is the life portrait you did of that womans face...she has an interesting bone structure. You definately captured something in each of these people. I love squinting at these...lol =) Congrats on the DVD's!!

Hello Mr. Flickstone, amazing work. It's great to see the difference between the life drawing and the photo work. I think it's true that the life drawing has a certain appeal to it and texture that the photo refs do not. They are all mesmerizing though. Could you please list a series of steps that you take to shading. Do you begin with a base value and then work darker and darker or do you do small sections at a time? I am in the process of shading, and did a real careful drawing, then kind of just shaded over the whole drawing impromptu style without much forethought. Also, how long did it take from life and the photos please. You are a real inspiration for myself, thanks.

Ron, you just continue to blow me away.
It's awesome to see that even you are growing and evolving as an artist.
I love how the female model came out form last monday's class!
You created such incredible volume that it has become more than just a drawing on the page.
I can't wait to see this Monday's model! (can't remember that guy's name, but he looked awesome with his hat n glasses!)

btw... where did you get your paper from? I've checked a few stores with no luck. Rhino had the Drawing Medium paper, but not the plate surface paper.

Fantastic work, Ron. You might downplay your work at Watts (fast, no time to think about all the details), but I've always been amazed and inspired by it. Your foundation is so freaking solid that it's no surprise to me that your first "Assaelist" studies turned out beatifully. I think it was Sargent that said that painting is a science that must be mastered before it becomes an art, and you're doing an truly incredible job of spreading that science.
