A nice start, man! Keep it up! You've got the right idea by doin' the studies. Keep at 'em. They'll be what really help you improve more than anything else. Trust me. I really like the pencil stuff. Especially the last ones. Nice work!

well.. nice char lady thingy :):)

exercises : try to subdevide evrything in ur surroundings into easy geometrie.. : cubes or cylinders.. its the EASIEST 3D volume..when u draw.. its automaticaly alligned into perspective .. my table here is a cube.. the shelves.. my minitor..sofas ..cubes too this room is a cube too.. try to see the boarders.. when u draw.. u only can draw hard e dges u cant draw a soft-transition line or something :D

when udraw any cube.. its alligned into perspective..

when u look at a house in front of you.. it has its own distance.. see the lines and silouette. important thing is foreshortening.. is one line just a bit to long it will look twisted...

distance is important : skyscraber look huge.. because of the special angle of the sillouette.. paralell lines make cube appear small.. when u get a VP ur lines will collaps.. non-parallel.. this way u can interprete the distance of ur 2cm cube into 2000000 meters :>.. its still same cube.. but in a scale like 1:1 or 1 : 246

u can draw same cube.. and take a photo of a car.. now u can resize the cars photo until u have the 1:1 scale..

next thing is.. u can controle the perspective flow.. in reality the images u see with ur eye are defines thru the eye-lense.. diffrent lense diffrent image the light gets distorted diffrent becaus of the glass

this depends on the ANGLE ..when u wanna rotate ur cubes.. just change the angles .. few degrees...

depending on this angle and the vanishing point distance interpretation u can change the perspectives flow.. which means .. u can use.. 100 of diffrent vanishing points in one single image

the important thing is.. u need to see the third dimension.. between 3d reality
and 2d drawen reality is a difference.. reality has space*orbit..
an paper sheet only has 2D axis... x and y .. no space no orbit.. its flat

thats why the artist has to translate between 3D reality and 2D faked drawen reality on paper u only can draw up down left right.. in 3d u can allign lines up down left right AND for and backward
these lines which goes into distance in reality.. are drawn up and down on paper.. but thes up and down lines are same..just up and down...how to seperate these lines.. i need to figure out which line goes into which axis..
u seperate these with angles.. ..try draw cubes.. and some more complex cube stuff.. i used to draw chairs tables pc monitors and some allignements.. like 10 cubes in a group with 1 Vp

my perspective tut : http://www.fragtasia.de/bob/2dstuff/_sketchbook/tut/

check p1 and p2.. lil examples
compomise one cube with the next.. the only thing i changed are
1:angles
2: size
3 : Vps angles

keep in mind : non paralell lines automaticaly create a VP
no distance = no VP
far distance = extreme VP = extreme ANGLES

when u draw.. u only draw lines.. and these lines are connected with angles.. thats it O_o

when u draw.. dont see what u draw.. but see yur lines and angles because these lines and angles create the illusion of what u see.. heads cars females.. stunning illusions of realistic drawings :)

if u got questiuons.. icq or msn.. or post them here or pm me :^^:

hope this is clear.. if no .. just tell me and ill exlpain with other examples..
post some perspective stuff here.. ill check them out and tell u what to fix if u like

hey darkos, these studies are looking pretty nice, your figures look proportionately accurate and your rendering is pretty good too. just watch out on some of those imagined figures because they arent maintaining the gesture as well as some of the life-drawn figures. your faces look like they're coming along but there are still some anatomical errors which could be easily fixed. so check up on some portraiture and you'll be well on your way man...keep em coming, they're lookin great

wow, nice thread so far.. really impressive how you settled into the workspace on painter and PS.. also how quickly you are zeroing in on your own weaknesses and the proper construction methods. Really refine your aproach to shape and layout, I think it is most obvious that is the main thing keeping you from having absolute control over the more drawnout finished works.. Thing is, there are figures and drawings in your graphite and sketchbook pages that are spot on.. See the backview of the arm on the toned color page if you are wondering what I am talking about (or some of the figure studies) It seem like you are in a wee bit offa' rush to start in on the fun parts in some of the longer ones, and you never truly finalize the structure... really, don't get me wrong if I sound critical, I am reffering to what I notice even if it is not terribly obvious. Plus you asked for crit 0_o....
One thing that may help you alot would be to use something solid ( a clear refference pic, or some public sculpture in a park ) for refference anatomy wise, to really get the masses sorted out. You could then elaborate any forms you want or add accessories as per yer' whim,,,, The benefit of this is to engrain what the realistic play of light is like in a real subject in your brain as you draw ( which means bits of it will stick, making your imaginative drawings more realistic ) It also means you have a predefined lightsource in your image if you give someone, say a pair of burly shoulder pads and a chest plate...

Not much else to say,, really try making some custom brushes in the brushmakers in PS and Painter......draw (even) more,, you have loads of natural talent,,, not everyone does....god mayswoop down and....give it to someone else.

anyhoo, keepitup

codakromek > thanks for the crits and the time to write all that. It's very true that I don't take the time ton build the figures and that I go to the rendering very quickly :^^;:
Will try to study more to make the illustrations more solid. I have been studying anatomy with books but I have troubles to put all the forms in movement (how a torso is bend in that position or how an arm is supposed to be in other position...). I definitely need more observation studies! Thx man! :yayca:

Darkos,,,

It is nice to see the more finely rendered heads you are doing,,,,I like the ones on the toned paper,,,,,I think those ones could go another step if you wanted to,,,,Obviously, the toned paper will take a white colored pencil real nice,,,but sometimes drawing over graphite or ball point pen will mess with that kind of application,,,,Here is something that works for me real good,,,,When I do a drawing on toned paper with an unstable medium (ballpoint, graphite) sometimes I want to add another type of light to it,,,there are things like paint markers, acrylics and guache, that can go right over unstable marks without having an allergic reaction.......But colored pencils are generally allergic to graphite and ballpoint because they are slippery (graphite) or sticky (ballpoint)

I will sometimes take a drawing like that and color it with a marker from the other side of the page,,,,,it doesn't smudge graphite that way, and it also pushes some of the loose crap off of the front of the drawing, which makes it more receptive to colored pencil....It is like a histamine blocker..

If this idea interests you, I would reccomend trying it out on some drawings you don't like first,, it takes some getting used to,,,,,Also, marker over ballpoint is neat the way it blurs the line,, it is like blending...... Working with a slight grey (marker) on toned paper with a dark line drawing is really an ideal way to get fully fleshed out, round forms.. The reason is the midtone that is already there ( the tone) gets stepped up by the light grey, and the highlights ( colored pencil, paint marker) really pop..... The best thing about it, though, is how much work is already done so there is less of a need for shading with the pencil or pen you are using,,,this leaves more receptive paper open for following applications ( that might have allergies )

By the way, the asian kid with the riveting eyes on the same page as the kid poppin' the ollie is very good.

any way, just some suggestions and things to look out for if you feel like trying something like that,, no pressure :yayca:

Lookin' good Darkos. Try making more consistent pencil strokes when hatching. Like on the demon in the last batch - every stroke of the background goes other way. Try turning the strokes into spots of light and shade instead of making a bunch of lines :)

Idiomatic
July 14th, 2006, 07:50 PM
This are some really nice speedpaintings, Darkos! I think my favorites are the monochromatic landscapes and the figure studies. . . They seem to be finding more in your own voice, if that makes any sense; the Sparth/Mode Quebecois-style studies are nice but the techniques produce a very singular style of expression, i.e. one that will probably always be recognized as 'in the style of. . .'. Your own style could be just as compelling!

Keep up the good work!

darkos
July 17th, 2006, 11:41 AM
thx guys,

Idiomatic > good advices, man, it's pretty strange for me that I can't seem to have the same kind of technique for the figures and the enviros. You're right about the Sparth-ish influence which is still too blatant in my works.

Here are two chicks that have been removed from the Finally Finished section, I know it's not the best stuff but I thought it wasn't that bad :[

Nice environment concepts, especially the textures and colors. I would love to know more about your process and technique you use when going about creating those. Maybe a tutorial?
I also really enjoy your early character studies they have a lot of style and motion. However, the last few characters feel ridged and stiff in comparison. For instance, in the “two chicks” renders you removed from the Finally Finished section, the proportions are off and their poses feel unnatural. Especially the right one, her right arm is short and her thigh and legs are awkward. I love her face and expression but I just wish her body had the same love and style.
Anyway, I look forward to seeing more of everything.

Some really sweet speedpaints dude. I really enjoyed alot of the envo. work with nature as a subject. Some of the more recent futuristic stuff looks great as well, that last ship design is nicely done and original. The most recent repaint of the skeleton warrior..Really dig, wish I could see more of that, more chicks.. You could use a bit more variety I think. But yeah, you deserve more replies man. Keep it up.

Ninja girl is looking better. Glad to see you fixed/moved the arm a bit. Although something is off with her hands still. Overall her pose is feeling forced and her legs are flat reading as though both are on the same plane. Right now I view her arm in her hair as though it’s perched on a mantle instead of brushing through her hair. I can see a bit of the contrapposto in her body but I don't think its being carried through to her head and shoulders.
The background is a little confusing. The right tree could use some more modeling and the horizon is a little strange. Right now it doesn't carry through the picture stopping at her waist. Its also not well formed and lacks atmospheric perspecitve. I hope this helps.

I looked at that original ;P. Its probably slightly better than something I would do :). Seriously though, its pretty impressive to see you take something old and try to revamp it. I usually just get too scared to work on something at a certain point and never come back to it.

September 9th, 2006, 07:30 PM
This is great stuff, man! The inviros rock - wish i knew how to paint stuff like that! The girls have some small anatomy flaws, nothing big, but my advise is too try and make them look more natural. They seem a tad stiff and "posing" more than "acting". Ask yourself what the story behind the pose is before painting it. Covering up the legs and hand on the ninja girl looks more like you are hiding or avoiding the hard parts than having her interact in an inviroment. But what the hell do i know? Again, love the inviros - beautiful colors, textures and strokes! Nice!

I don't agree about the masquera on the lower eyelid, it's a stylistic choice, and is possible in real life. These speedies are kinda cute, everything looks like it's constructed with blocks http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y213/darkos2000/20060921_speed.jpg,
very LEGOS. Stylistically it's interesting, still needs further development though, that'll come in time. There's a static effect on all of these with the emphasis on the verticals and horizontals, kinda bland. The frames look like they are based on root rectangles, so I guess you're experimenting with a square look. Only other crit is that you put the boobs way too low on the spikey haired chick.

darkos
October 4th, 2006, 12:03 PM

armando

Those ships could be bigger, with more exagerrated perspective, they look small as they are. I also don't like how the two distant ones are placed horizontally across from each other, it ruins that little bit of tilt you've got on the horizon, it ruins that being there feeling. The whole top of the picture is pretty boring, just the tiny ships and nothing else. The lighting is different on the chick and the ships, the fronts of the ships should be in shadow.

I really like the harsh brush strokes on the faster ones. I think they'd be more effective if the form wasn't so stylized (anime and all). Great work. Keep on.

I'm really fond of the atmospheric perspective in the one you posted on the 3rd. To really sell as a finished piece I think it'd need a touch less cloning.

The most recent has a cool feel -- those birds really round out the atmosphere. Perspective-wise, is the symbol's reflection in quite the right place? Seems it should be rather lower.

darkos
November 17th, 2006, 07:04 PM
thanks jason, you're right about the cloning but it was a real quick painting, maybe I will work a bit more on it one day. I really suck at perspective so you're certainly right there too!

Nice speed paintings. Though, I do have to say I like the couple of earlier page 3 ones. Nice brushes strokes on those! Really like 'em!

The newer ones are nice, but they have a more concept arty look to them. That's not a bad thing, but its...one of those unexplainable things I can't put my finger on right now. They're nicely done, but a little standard, I guess. I don't know how to put it.

Bah! I'm probably worrying you!

Really nice updates since the last time I posted, I should swing by more often. Most are really nice, but I think the Street Fighter ones are weaker than the rest. They seem really stiff and for dynamic poses like the Chun-li one, playing around with action lines and blurring would be helpful.

But, the Bison (Vega, er whatever) one is the best out of that set. Nice perspective on legs, value control, and the cape is pretty interesting.

Good work, keep it up.

You don't need linework with environments like that. I think just being a bit more careful would help. Like on the skull eyes and noses, they could use a bit of tweaking to get them more anatomically correct. Now, this may only apply to organic structures like this. For something that's man-made and perspective based, that may be a different story. But, the organic stuff is pretty nice.

You said the magic word!

That's a nice piece. The smoke could be blended a bit better, it still has the air of a Cloud Brush. That's mainly around the big guy's feet. His mask area and the two shoulder parts flanking it look very nice.

I think some texture on the tenticles would help. I can tell the wood is wood, the big is primarily metal, but the tents look a little blob like.

Last thing. Dutching (turning it at an angle) the piece could add a greater sense of drama, but that's a personal preference.

Great piece! Pirates FTW!
