Hello all!

I had about an hour of free time today after I got home from work so I tried out a quick creature design in Painter8. Crits and tips welcome.

I really dig this image. It has a finished look but also maintains the looseness of a speed painting. This is helped by the paint strokes both within the body and without which work with the pose of the creature to give a very lively feel to the image.

As someone who too often over works designs into somewhat stiff final images I am very impressed, (maybe even a little envious  ). Great work!

Thanks for the comments Stripe...
Im so glad you mentioned the "looseness" of the design. I know exactly what you mean about "overworking" a design and Im trying to get away from that by focusing on keeping things "loose".

Looks a bit clique as far as creatures go but youre line work and coloring techniques are very solid! I like the lighting on his back.

you should look at Dan Milligan's work, your style make me think about him :

The creature is also awesome but I like your color palette much more.

Thanks for the input guys.

I'll also look around for some of Dan Milligan's stuff.

I couldnt sleep tonight so I decided to do another sketch. Not your typical "creature" design but rather just some psycho standing in a hallway with an ax.

(Oh one more thing, for the past month (since I got my first PC Graphics tablet) ive litterally been pulling the hair out my head trying to get a handle on using Painter and photoshop with an Intuos3. I have to give credit to Feng's little tutorial for helping me out. Im still trying to a handle on the Wacom though. When I draw on paper I have a habbit of spinning and turning the paper while I draw....Can't do it with a PC tablet.

Anyhow , Im think Im getting the hang of it .

Thanks again guys.

I love seeing characters filled with blacks, with the forms coming out of the shadows. One small thing that bothers me on the first one are the eyes. There's an old saying that the eyes are the gateway to the soul. Drawing the sclera, pupil and iris will add a lot of personality of the character.

I can't really draw on a tablet all that well but you can press SpaceBar + Alt to spin the canvas. Kinda unrelated but I have the lower button on the stylus set to ALT to get the color picker and the top button to ALT + CTRL to resize the brush. I'm still using painter 6 so the ket combos may be different for 8.

...why dont ya let your self a bit more time. Sure i know "IT my Decision Of Artistic painting and you get on my rsp" - but, couldnt you soften the images a bit more, your detales look like learning yesterday @ university... just keep the things going, if it starts to annoy get yourself a tea or go for a walk ....that restart to paint the rest

Thanks Xunling... I had a little bit of a problem trying to understand what you were saying but I think I got the idea. These days I have very little time to do personal illustrations so thats why these drawings were done so quickly.

Basically just painted sketches. Ill if I can find some more spare time to do more detailed pieces.
