I'm pretty much a newbie to drawing. I get better every day. I work only off of live models or from my imagination. I use a 11x15 inch brown sketch, 18x24 drawing paper. Uh, I guess I'll start with some gestures.
http://webspace.ringling.edu/~jgelb/drawings/year01/figure-gestures-4a.jpg
Then I break into a longer pose
http://webspace.ringling.edu/~jgelb/drawings/year01/figure-ray-3.jpg
I guess I'll show a self portrait gesture
http://webspace.ringling.edu/~jgelb/drawings/year01/figure-jon-3.jpg
I hope I'm not putting too much on the table.
So here's this:
http://webspace.ringling.edu/~jgelb/drawings/year01/figure-john-1.jpg
Alright and this:
http://webspace.ringling.edu/~jgelb/drawings/year01/figure-larry-1.jpg
http://webspace.ringling.edu/~jgelb/drawings/year01/figure-larry-1-head.jpg
and this:
http://webspace.ringling.edu/~jgelb/drawings/year01/figure-channel-1.jpg
and this:
http://webspace.ringling.edu/~jgelb/drawings/year01/figure-bob-2.jpg
followed by this:
http://webspace.ringling.edu/~jgelb/drawings/year01/figure-john-2.jpg
this is my first digital drawing ever:
http://webspace.ringling.edu/~jgelb/graphics/digital-oldlady-1.jpg
It's possibly the ugliest thing I'ver ever seen in my life. I didn't use any reference for this, so it looks like, well, it looks poorly done. But there is a first for everything.
this is where I was a few months ago:
http://webspace.ringling.edu/~jgelb/drawings/year01/figure-ben-12.jpg
http://webspace.ringling.edu/~jgelb/drawings/year01/figure-ben-11.jpg
Ah, and here's my first painting ever:
http://webspace.ringling.edu/~jgelb/drawings/year01/acrylic-1.jpg
Massive improvement is what I'd call it. But the question is what will I develop next other than the ability to draw bisymetrical eyes, correct hands ? I'm looking for summer work in concept art or forensic sketches. If you know of a hook up don't hesitate to hook me up.

Noob? Dude, you need to look at some of the other posts around here, mine included! lol You've really got the right idea and it looks like your studyin' your balls off. Keep doing what your doing and you'll be where you want to be in no time. One thing that I don't see that might help is some anatomy studies (muscles/bones). Your movin' in the right direction tho. Just keep pushin' on! I think Reo Speedwagon said that. lol
Hey, where'd you get that brown sketchbook? I need one of thoz! I can't find 'em anywhere. I'm always lookin' for 'em. Thanks fer da' help!

Noob? ... dude this stuff is really quite good, no offense to other people on CA but there are people who are alot worse than you. Your technique seems pretty good at these early stages and your life drawings are pretty sweet. The only crit i have is that ure drawing seems very very loose, possibly a bit to scribbly, try limiting ure line usage so u can the exact line u need first time. This might help clean some of ure drawings up.
Nice work thought keep it up.

Yeah, I've been working my mechanical pencil out pretty hard. Thanks for the constructive crits.
zebzfree - I like your creatures and your (bic) pen work is pretty hot.
PhatAndy- your stuff is cool as hell man. You've got lots of potential and at such a young and tender age. You keep it up and you'll be a force.

THE guy? thats so much more specific than my name :P Anyways great stuff man. I know how you feel, everyday I feel like I am still just a huge noobie at making art. Sometimes it feels like a journey thats in a constant state of beginning. Keep trying to strengthen your ability to draw from imagination and memory.

Here are some twenty minute portraits. I feel like I went a little hard and heavy on the pencil, but I was desperate to get down what I saw.

Here are some hands:

And I am quite the newbie. This is where I was five months ago for a 40 min pose:

And here's what I can do in ten minutes, in an uncomfortable position today

Wow, nice work man, that last dump is really great. I feel like the figures painted in liquid mediums (particlularly oil, even though I really dig the coffee lil) are much stronge than your pencils. All of it looks good, but you pencil work seems a little touch-and-go, or rushed, I can't really tell. My suggestion is to really try to make your hatching lines not only descibe the value of what you are drawing, but also the shape and form. Especially on that page of little portraits on toned paper that you did, if you could let the direction of your line work describe the roundness of the forms instead of functioning simply as shading, they could really be beautiful, because I can tell that your rendering ability is already there. But I would definately continue in the paint...Its just a matter of finding what you work best in...but you paintings really stand out as being very strong, especially if you are just beginning!
Good work and I can't wait to see more!

your handle on tonal observation is incredible... your drawing of the boat/fisherman is my favorite.. love the mood and personality to that drawing :) Keep on posting.

Thanks for the critiques. I will try to use line direction to an advantage.
Here's the latest drawing. The model moved but not enough to frustrate me. Had she been more off in her pose I'd have said something.

here's another painting. I sort of learned a lot in the process of doing it so that one side is more primitive, more symbolic (worst of an observation) than the other.
