Well here is my online sketch journal to mark my progress and skill. At the time of this post, I have only been drawing a little over two years. Any critiques would be appreciated.

Thanks

Line weight assignment.

Not bad for chosing something with difficult forshortening. Used Loomis for reference.

My attempt.

Figured it was time to try the line weight assignment. It was tough, especially since my hands kept shaking with the tombo brush pen.

Blue Pencil Line Drawing

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v648/githistle/01LineWeightA.jpg

Ink Drawing

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v648/githistle/01LineWeightB.jpg

Total time: 1 hour 5 minutes

Thoughts:
1. Even using construction lines it seems that I still lost volume.
2. Inking could have been better. Lines are jagged since I did not use long continuous strokes
3. Proportions for the most part are accurate, just not a good representation of model.
4. Need to work more on massing out highlights and shadows in hair.

nice stuff :D

drawing simple is a good way to understand proportions and volume much faster.. and it saves time

try to subdevide the body into easy geometrie.. like spheres cubes and cylinders.. its also good to draw bodys made out of cubes adn stuff to grasp proportions .. i do this very otten to get a feeling for my shapes perspctive volume and their orientation in 3D space*orbit

think about :

::: perspective
::: vanishing point
::: dynamic
::: symmetrie
::: foreshortening

keep drawing ! :dur:

Sideshow: Thanks for the advice and encouragement.

I feel fairly comfortable with gestures, but getting volume is difficult even using shapes. With time I think I'll get it figured out. Right now, I'm just trying to get those 1000 - 5000 bad drawings out of me.

I should have some lifedrawing this week to give you an idea of where my skills lie when not copying from images and books.

yaay :) no probi dude :D i like to help :perv:

keep the third dimension in mind.. the volume.. well.. take a look at a simple cube.. its the easiest volume.. the effect and the result u see is because the angles.. these angles make the cube appear as a 3Dimensional shape

draw bodys like cubes.. and legs and arms like cylinders its a good way to learn about the third dimension and to get a feeling for volume and perspective :)

nice gesture drawings man :D keep up :^^:

Shylone: Thanks for the encouragement. I tried going looser in life drawing, but I feel like I failed to capture the gestures.

Sideshowbob: Based on your advice and Lim's I'm going to go look at Loomis's work for drawing basic shapes.

As for today's life drawing sessions, I know it was worth it to go, but the frustration today was more than I could stand. So after doing these 1 minute gestures, I decided that I'd go and study anatomy and basic shapes and see what happens with next week's life drawing sessions.

Went back to do one last attempt. This was a 20-minute pose (last one for the model) that I only had 5 minutes to do. Guess that is what I get for going back so late.

Well it's that time of the year where everything is pink and full of hearts. I couldn't resist the urge to make my girlfriend into a Valentine. So here's the roughs to the final.

Hey you, Faye and I are looking at this together in the workroom and we are both smiling! You most definitely doing the right stuff and thinking things through.

You've come a long way baby, don't stop now!

Oomgawa: Thanks. I've been pushing harder this month than I usually do. I've been given a challenge of 6 months before my next "breakthrough" and I'm trying to break it early by drawing 2 - 4 hours a day.

nice studies.. and nice self portraits .. keep up !

thers a way to get things in heads faster... i mean.. theres a way u can draw all things simple without loosing any controle about perspective details orientation viewpoint volume 3Dness ..
when we see things.. we achieve 1000 of diffrent informations about what we see - we just cant handle - but our subconsciousness knows it all -

when u know how to find the lines u need to get the result u want .. drawing things will be much easier.. i found it very very helpfull to draw simplified and doing observation studies - finding information about perspective proportions 3Dness

each partcel of things u wanna draw can be indicated with one line... i draw my simplified heads with less then 25 lines .. a cube has 9 lines my heads are very simple then.. but detailed enough to see how its oriented and alligned next steo is .. i add more details to my shapes and i add other features

i made 2 crapy tuts about this -> hope link works
http://www.fragtasia.de/bob/2dstuff/_sketchbook/tuts.zip
inside the zip is a txt-file - read it

here are some more tuts about almost evrything *but not that detailed*

http://www.polykarbon.com/tutorials/index.htm

cube and cylinder drawing is also an excelent exercise to train the mind

when u got some more questions.. pm me :)

Sideshowbob: Thank you for the info and tutorials. I'll work through them sometime this week. After doing those, then perhaps I'll have questions (most likely). :wink:

Jokisalo: Thank you for the encouragement. I have to admit that for awhile there I didn't think I was improving. It seemed like I would make progress one day and fall back the next. As for pushing, that's what I'm doing now. I was told that I'm about 6 months away from the next "breakthrough" and I want to see if I can break it sooner.

Well here is my first attempt at the daily sketch group. Perspective made life difficult. At least the idea is sort of conveyed.

Probably not what most people would think a war scene is....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v648/githistle/dsg667-WarScene.jpg

Blue Pencil followed by 2B.

Good:
1. Perspective of buildings is accurate.
2. 1.5 hrs and slowly improving for speed.

Bad:
1. Nothing really rendered.
2. Line weight is too even.

Ugly:
1. Need more figure / anatomy studies.

Corky: I do on just about an everyday basis. I study to the point of not doing anything imaginative. Makes me glad that there is a DSG to get the old synapes to fire.
