View Full Version : Penthouse: The Magazine of Sex, Politics, and Protest ... (or not?)

I was wondering.

Penthouse is the self-proclaimed magazine of sex, politics and protest.

Something about the millions of copies they sell worldwide and enourmous amounts of income they generate really give away the magazine's corporate nature. I dunno... I feel as if on some level, they aren't really as politically involved or compromised as they seem or claim.

Just how anti-establishment do you think Penthouse really is?

Honestly, I haven't seen a Penthouse in years... but I'm pretty sure the last time I did, it was a pr0n rag, no? Are you saying there's actually text of some kind in there? [GASP]

Penthouse is SO anti-establishment that I have actually taken the time to read the articles on occasion. Years ago there was an interview of L. Ron Hubbard Jr that was positively frightening. In that interview the Junior Hubbard exposed the alien belief connection in Scientology (which you can find in several places on the internet nowadays).

Not really here to rescue us. The gist of it is this: Our spirits have escaped from a prison planet and inhabited the bodies of early humans, which developed into us. This evil overlord (who I imagine to be a bit like any random member of Gwar) is looking for us to take us back. But look around, we are far too clever. Our balanced planet of peace and love will surely be able to fight off this dark lord and his minions. We are Thetans or something like that. Interesting concept, I suppose. Allegedly Scientology was created as a bet between Harlan Ellison and L Ron Hubbard to see if a religion could be wholly created from scratch and gather a large following in a relatively short period of time. Apparently so.

Yup, L.Ron ended up getting investigated by the FBI though, didn't he? A lot of people think he faked his death and has been living on a yacht in international water for years too :)

Hubbard was also a follower Aleister Crowley, and a mate of Jack Parsons, the rocket scientist(!) who believed himself to be the Antichrist. Funny old world...

Well, now, he couldn't be all bad being hooked up with old Crowley, master showman. By the way, better avatar, that, Posh.

Yes, Ron Hubbard has had major problems with the FBI--the organization broke into some government building to try to destroy documents about Scientology and got caught. Hubbard blamed it on his wife and said he didn't know anything about it. I think she went to jail.
And thetans are spirits that attach to your body which is why you need to pay Scientology lots of money to help you get rid of them!

Thank you for clarifying, I hadn't read that article since the late 80's.

There is a real irony to Hubbard being investigated by the FBI. When he was a member of the O.T.O.(Crowleys Occult group) in 1945, he claimed to be working for the FBI to undermine occult organisations accross America! But both him and Jack Parsons were really pretty enthusiastic members of the OTO, getting up to all sorts of magickal trickery, which even managed to annoy Crowley himself. In the end I think Hubbard just used the OTO as a blueprint for Scientology. What I find wierd is the following Scientology has amongst 'high profile celebrities' such as John Travolta... but then, why not?

Hey Bat, cheers! :)
