Hi, first time posting here.
Here is a quick sketch (3-5 minutes) done in mspaint with a mouse.
Yeah, tablets and photoshop is for rich artists.
Well, what do you think of it?

Not bad at all, especially for MSPaint. Don't really have any crits for it. Maybe just spend some time touching it up a bit. Maybe give him arms...

Hey, very nice work!
he reminds me alot of St. Sabastian-- one of my favorite characters from Italian renaissance art.
Dont worry about what program you use; simpler ones are really better to use as youre getting started so that you arent distracted by 4200 brushes and lens flares and dodge and burn and such. Working with simpler software will probably help you build stronger painting skills than software with many "shortcuts"
here is some other painting software to try out: (look up on download.com or google)
Artrage - free
Open canvas - i think you can try it, and its not that expensive if you like it alot
Gimp - dont know much about it but many people use it
Alias Sketchbook Pro - similar to artrage in some ways, free to try, kind of expensive for what it is, at least to me.
those are some alternatives when you've had enough of Paint :D
dont feel bad about not getting many replies-- i have a piece up that has had 770 views and 1 comment (its at the link in my signature)... people have been really shy here lately. hope to see more of your work!

Looks good, especially for 3-5 minutes.
Also, entry level tablets can be acquired at a relatively economical price; I got a Wacom Graphire 2 that was used and had been previously refurbished (returned to the factory due to defect, repaired, and then re-sold) for about $45 +$5 shipping. By no means does it hold a candle to the nicer Wacoms, but nor does it pale as a serious tool like the even cheaper brands, which seem to be very dodgy from what I have heard.
Anyway, just my insight... keep at it!

Thanks for all the replies! I didn't mean to come off as grumpy...
@Hillartsympho
Haha, it IS St.Sebastian! I love drawing this guy, and his pose because it puts the figure's arms behind his back and exposes the torso, which is fun to draw. And the arrows gives you a non-gay excuse for tying up a guy. If you like St. Sebastian, you should check out some of Durer's renditions.
Yeah, I will definitely check those programs out, but I'm sort of computer illiterate, so I'm afraid all those fancy options look sort of scary.
@HEROIC
Yeah, the arrows should be a little more varied, but I lost control of the mouse. :nohope:
And yes! never forget the paper! I find it so much more rewarding than digital.

cool... i said like st. sabastian because i saw the character title thingy in the corner... i wasn't going to tell you what your work is or isn't...
Just got back from a semester in Rome... he's also done well in work by Mantegna and Bellini.
hey don't worry about your computer skills, you'll get used to working digitally by practicing. I'd recommend ArtRage then-- its simple like Paint and is alot of fun!
heres some info: this is the developer's site. http://www.ambientdesign.com/artrage.html

While it's true that Photoshop and a Wacom tablet can wipe out a grand you don't have to go that far to get really great stuff. As noted there are free programs but consider Painter. It's half the price of Photoshop and generates some of the finest digital art there is. If Wacom is out of your price range then AIPTEK teblets are pretty cheep. Their quality is way below Wacom but several steps above a mouse. I wish I had a good Wacom but I've been doing pretty nice stuff with my AIPTEK 9x12 that I got for $125.00.
So you can get a near pro set up for under $500.00. I got Painter8 in a software bundle for $200.00 so my setup cost about $350.00 with tax and batteries (for the pen). I got super lucky. That bundle is no longer available but something like it might be someday.
Do some pencil sketching on paper and scan it and let us see your real talents!
