Nothing can prepare you for this.
Screen is like oh my god!
Welcome to the 21st century!
Pure brilliance in every way, I’m more than impressed With PSP.
All the bad things and rumors I’ve heard is pure shit. This is one strong and solid, beautiful and powerful little monster. Games, movies, mp3…and more ,you name it and it’s all there (and in high quality!)
...
I'm playing Rengoku: Tower of Purgatory,
plays like a dream...
You need to see this chrystal clear screen for yourself, but until then here's (crappy)picture:

Now I want a PSP! But I also still want a DS because of its beautiful touch screen from heaven! Why must the gaming industry always force me to make these choices?
Edit: but when will Sony learn how to make a real D-pad... It has to have a center, one that you can touch, otherwsie it isn't a pad...

I really hope that when the time comes for its u.s. launch that they fix alot of the things I've been reading about. And hopefully yours will stay in one piece as well. I'm still a little skeptical though, especially reading the interview with kutarugi about the defective units in japan. The thing just looks so damn cool, i still wanna get one. Hopefully everything will be resolved, *fingers crossed*

The bonus pack with Spiderman2 on the Universal Media Disc (fancy new name for the Minidisc technology) comes in at US$250 Retail.
Either way it looks sweet....but will need to address the toughness....apparently the disc can pop out by dropping (highly doubtful anyone will drop it but you never know).
Edit:
"The device, which launched in Japan last year, is set to debut in the US and Canada on March 24 for suggested retail prices of $249 USD and $299.99 CND respectively."
"Unlike the Japanese launch, which offered a base PSP package for approximately $185 USD, North American buyers will only be able to get one bundle, the pricier PSP Value Pack. The good news is that the Pack comes standard with a good number of extras that help make the purchase worthwhile, including a 32MB Memory Stick Duo, headphones with remote control, battery pack, AC adaptor, soft case, and cleaning cloth. In addition, the bundle boasts a movie/music/game sampler UMD disc with non-interactive demos."
"On top of everything else, the first one million people to purchase a PSP in the US will receive a bonus UMD featuring the full feature film Spider-Man 2."
and the US launch titles are:
* Ape Escape: On the Loose, Sony Computer Entertainment America
* ATV Offroad Fury: Blazin' Trails, Sony Computer Entertainment America
* Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower, Capcom
* Dynasty Warriors, KOEI
* FIFA 2005, Electronic Arts
* Gretzky NHL, Sony Computer Entertainment America

Sony should get a serious kick in the ass for using those memory sticks. A compact flash or sd card would have been so much better since they are a lot cheaper and lots of people already have one of them.
Other than that it looks pretty neat, though. Does it play DivX/XviD movies, and is it possible to hook it up to the tv? :)

That's the whole point....why should they encourage consumers to use other storage media not propriertary to Sony? Memory Sticks, UMD, Minidisc, DVD, HD-DVD. Sony has learned their lessons well since the failed BETA cassette tapes. They want to dominate storage media, and by doing that they dominate content....if you release enough content or exclusive content on a new storage media, sooner or later consumers will have to adapt and it will become accepted as standard.....forcing other electronic companies to purchase manufacturing licences from Sony.
(this plan led to the purchase of content developers, Columbia/Tristar, Square-Enix and so on....and led to the creation of SCE and so on, to create Sony owned content to be published on Sony owned storage media)

That's the whole point....why should they encourage consumers to use other storage media not propriertary to Sony?Because they want to keep their customers happy? I doubt they would lose an awful lot of money by switching to a more common format, since that would most likely make more people interested in buying their products. I don't really mind that they put the games on some weird disc...Nintendo does the same thing. But when it comes to storing data which you may want to use in more than one portable machine, they should really go for the most popular format. It would have been neat if I could just insert my 1 gig compact flash card and check out photos I have taken with my camera...

February 7th, 2005, 01:18 AM
Sony did just that with their latest prosumer digital camera. The F-828 has both Memory Stick and CF slots. In part because the 8Mpx camera needs a lot of storage for the RAW format, and like you said the CF cards are cheaper per megabyte.
But the trend doesn't flow to other Sony products. PSP's design will be thicker or bigger if additional slots were built in for CF cards. Maybe 3rd party accessory manufacturers for the PSP will take this into consideration and add some cradle for CF cards.
The same goes for the rest of the Sony products. The F-828 is the only known Sony product that handles CF memory cards. The rest of Sony's products are made small, and the memory stick is part of their design/storage architecture.
Sony hasn't made a huge effort to conform to cheaper storage media with their new hardware in years....and its a trend that I expect will continue.
I'm not disagreeing with you regarding Sony's idiot policies...but it makes sense from a business POV. Its unlikely they will bend for folks like you and me who have a few spare CF storage cards lying around. Its one of the reasons why I haven't really warmed up to their product lineup.....well except for the PSP.

Its not really a defect. If you watch the whole video (lemme try and dig the vid up), the fella wasn't really trying to play on the PSP, he was flexing it really hard.....and with the PSP made of plastics without a metal chassis, the flexing causes the disc catch to pop the disc out just like when you press the eject button.
May cause a problem if you drop your PSP down the stairs. But I doubt anyone would be flexing the PSP so hard while playing. Even when you're reeeaaally excited.

Who drops a PSP??? you don't drop these kind of things. No one drops an IPod or a Palm Pilot or a laptop you just don't. However in case of the DS i can imagine myself fighting with the D-pad in my lefthand and the touchscreen pen-thingy in my right, whilst pressing the action buttons with my pinky and then dropping that, after which i wouldn't even bother picking it up again. Besides if the likely event occurs that the DS is dropped by someone imagine it landing face down splitting it right down the middle. leaving you with the gaming half in one hand and the touchscreen in the other. In the case of the PSP however, should anyone drop that..., Oops I forgot NO ONE DROPS A PSP.

Apparently the DS is being repositioned as something other than what it is right now (http://news.spong.com/detail/news.asp?prid=8385). Turns out that the DS was launched to take some thunder away from the PSP, while the real competitor to the PSP will be the forthcoming GBA2.
The new model of the Game Boy Advance will be shown at Nintendo’s E3 press conference this year in what will be one of the most remarkable moments in recent videogame history. The unit will be a true gaming machine and will come equipped with a large high-quality back-lit screen and analogue controls, very much, one might argue, like Sony’s PSP.
The DS, announced so soon after the PSP was unveiled by Sony, was effectively a spoiler machine, aimed at snatching away market share from SCEI. Although this has been categorically denied by the Kyoto giant, the revelation that a new Game Boy, which in essence appears to be a PSP with a Nintendo badge, confirms this belief beyond any doubt.
If anyone is considering the DS, I'd wait until E3 to see exactly what it is repositioned as.

Umm... yeah... Looking ahead of things the software line-up for the ds looks really dissapointing and I'm talking 6 months to a year outlook here. And I'm not going to start a debate about rehashing franchises. And I had a cube when in launched and have since only bought two games for it cause nothing was really all that appealing. I sold that thing off last week finally... And I'm not on any bandwagon so to speak I don't care what company holds more market share or what have you, but sony is just outdoing nintendo these days. The psp is outselling the ds in japan and I'm sure it'll do the same when it launches in the next few weeks over here. I only care about playing good software regardless of platform. And personally speaking I think nintendos lost it since snes. No flammage here man, just my .02.

The DS is being repositioned. It shouldn't be a surprise that there aren't alot of games in the pipeline when the device itself will undergo radical changes in the next 3 months. I'd focus on the GBA2 to make a fair assessment of the game lineup, not the DS.

Thats a very good point, and thats what I'm saying. Nintendo released hardware, which its loyal fans bought, plus other consumers as well. And I doubt they have too many intentions to support once the next gba comes out. And that sucks that they would do that do that to all the gamers out there. I'm not saying they've done it...yet, but odds are that will likely happen. Its the whole Sega 32x/Saturn thing all over again. i don't really want to go for it though since it's a first gen sony product
even though it technically is a 4th gen(i heard they went through 3 platforms already to try to perfect the bugs) it's still the first gen of production models... and we all know how reliable sony can be w/ hardware...but yea looks cool nonetheless, i think it'll crush the ds if nintendo doesn't get their head out of their butts(i own a ds, i love it, but the lack of entertaining games kills me)

I'm gonna hold out till I can get the unit by itself, as I've heard from people that have imported it that there isn't a whole lot of "value" in all the extra stuff your paying for. Lumines should be really cool, and I've heard ridge racer is just phenominal.

Yea, my sister got one at midnight. (she didn't even know what it was, but I guess some friends were getting them so she did also) This thing is sweet... I've been having fun messing with it. Definitely one of the coolest toys ever.

Damn!! I want one soooo bad!!! I just didn't want to deal with the waiting in line crap for another system again. That and I just bought a few neo-geo games that set me back... ehh... Did anyone get Lumines or Ridge Racers? I've heard RR is just unbelievable, but I'm interested in what people think of lumines. Good puzzler?

Wee.. I took acouple pictures, but it's nighttime so the lighting is awful.
I loaded the star wars episode 3 trailer onto it.. was making sure I could transfer widescreen videos, works well. Looks amazing too.

You can't tell in the pictures, but the resolution rocks on this thing.. you could keep portfolios and all kinds of good stuff on these. I need to get one of my own + a massive memory card and sit around watching samurai champloo on this thing.

i would like to know is there an autofill feature on any of the psp programs. one like the ipod shuffel has that autofills it at random when you plug it in so you dont have to update it yourself when you want new stuff.

I dunno, the PSP certainly looks nice, but I think I'd go for a PDA if I want a media player. A PSP is cheaper though, and certainly looks very nice.
I keep hearing a lot of interesting ideas for DS games, but it's all talk so far sadly. It seems to me that the DS has a definite advantage with the touch screen (enables games not possible on PSP). If the PSP had one, and dropped the disc in favor of regular USB keys (or some other standard format) I'd be all over it!

Why is it with video games that people always have to try and dump on one system to make another look good? It seems like Sony has done a great job at turning a lot thier cutomers into walking, shit-talking, little Sony advertisiments.
That being said, the PSP looks pretty cool. The screen is sweet, for sure, but the price is typically bloated, and I won't be the least bit suprised if there is some hardware defect that makes the damn things start breaking left and right...at least if PS1 and PS2 are any indication. I'm a little weary of the battery life too, but only time will tell how well it performs with what types of games. If the library is as vast as it looks to be the system should be alright, as long as 85% of the games aren't rehashed crap. Anyways, it looks good but the price and Sony's consistantly shoddy craftsmanship has me taking a wait and see attitude.
The DS has a smaller grittier screen, but it also has the touch screen which is gold. So far the games seem really fun, and despite the murmurs I hear on certain message boards, it seems to actually be a whole new approach to gaming, not just a gimmick. The battery life, typically solid Nintendo hardware, and ingenious screen protection/ sleep mode makes for a sweet little portable. The only problem is that Nintedo F.U.B.A.R.ed the launch again...when are they going to learn to have a strong starting line up? Still, as soon as the new Castlevania comes out I'm getting one. That game alone puts the system on the center of my gaming radar.

Best launch game, IMO. I've nearly missed many bus and train stops because of it. It's the type of game where your wrists are cramping, and your neck hurts from looking down, but you keep on playing.

Yeah, I've been reading on other boards that lumines is addicting as all hell. I've heard that its suprisingly deep the more you get into it. Damn I want a psp!!1 I just can't justify the 250 right now....

I can proudly say that I now own a PSP. I had buyers remorse for the first 30 minutes, and then I got it out of the box. Lumines is a great game, even though it took a little while for me to erase my bad tendancies from playing Tetris on the Game Boy. Has anyone tried out the multiplayer features yet?
