I figured I'd toy around with a limited palette, opting for a pure red/black/white image. I suppose I was drawing off of what I've seen from japanese paintings when I did this... although a Japanese painting would not feature round, smooth hills, rather they would likely be more triangular.

Anyhow... Tell me what you think, and what I should have done better! Input is welcome and desired :^^:

medium is (very cheap :er: ) acrylics on standard printer paper glued to a cardboard backing. I didn't feel like using canvasboard for something so simple

What you could have done better depends on what you were trying to accomplish. Japanese painting calls attention to empty space...keep in mind this refers to illusionary space within the painting's world, not the two-dimensional space of an uncluttered canvas. The difficulty of painting in this style effectively lies in creating the illusion of distance/volume/atmosphere with the least amount of strokes. So, insofar as your stated intention was to emulate Japanese painting at least partially, here's what you could have done better: As a viewer I'm struggling to decide which of your two hills is further away. You could say they just happen to be the same distance away from our viewpont, but that's not likely to happen in a natural environment. Also, you've opted out of the opportunity to use one of the most fundamental and effective ways of suggesting distance...overlapping layers of terrain.

If you can sustain your interest in Japanese art, I suggest you take time to read about and observe the subtle but effective techniques that are being used. Don't stop painting, but challenge your intellect more. I command you! :dur:
