Gestures!!!

these are some recent gesture drawings, they are all about 1 to 2 minute poses. I go to figure drawing sessions twice a week every week. gesture drawings are my favorite because they place so much value on such a small amount of time. the originals are in a figure drawing show downtown.

we did stuff like this in art school. it was great. when i get my studio i will resume (i love the word resume, i think there should be a song titled that....)

By the way, what kind of supplies do you use when you go to class? Charcol? What size paper? What's it cost you?

I have gotten in the habit of using black prisma colored pencils(sharpened at both ends) on a 18x24 newsprint pad. for gestures i prefer to stand while drawing.

Davi - Proud? . what you are perciving as pride is more of respect. respect for one of the most beautifull and complicated forms in the universe.
For me, my gestures are an attempt to fuse the beauty of the shell with the wonder and life of the soul that orchastrates its movement.

it is important to be confidant while making your strokes, but that confidence dosent stem out of pride it emerges form trust in ones abilities and knowledge of anatomy.

there are no tricks to gestures they last only a few moments but take years of drawing to truly capture.

I'm kind of bummed, as I look at these I'm realizing I haven't been doing as much life drawing as I should either.
Admittidly these sketches are like 2 yrs old.
Man its just tough with bosses that demand 80hr. workweeks....:bash: Time for a self imposed art bootcamp..

Hahahah... Preach on brother Groove! Hey, I am on the seach for life drawing sessions here in the Houston area... if you find some let me know....
I know they are out there cause I happend upon some about a year ago in a news paper or something.. soo.. They won't hide from me for long!

I know of four different sessions that happen weekly here. A friend of mine just got a MASSIVE studio space by enron field so we've been talking about trying to organize something there. Maybe even do some extra long poses so we can break out the oil paint!

wow, you all did a good job!

i really like andrew's lines... he's truly a master.
see how scribbly and loose, even unwanted they look in places... like just thrown in without idea...
and how perfect they form the gestures.

that is really admirable.

thickpain,t i like the flow you have in some of your drawings. the forth one for example: the slight indication of twist at her belly. it's so simple but it tells such a lot about what her belly looked like at that pose.

unfortunately, there aren't any life drawing classes around here. there's just a bunch of elitist art circle people who wear their noses so high that i always wonder how they actually can breath air up there.

i guess i'll have a drawing session in the park, tomorrow...
