Howdy howdy, this is my first post, but ive been viewing for a long time....only reason ive decided to post soemthing now is because im confused and feel trapped>right<...here's my problem.im 17 and Im in my first year of college(i live in the UK btw) and ive started an art couse (Art+Design)...there wasnt much options in terms of creative courses...so i had to do this. The problem with the course is, its just Not teaching me anything...we just spend all our time researching artists and using Textured Matrials...no real Drawing is ever involved. Its way to structured with no creative freedom and i cant work to my highest potential because the whole class is just so blank with no imagination. so im really confused whether to just keep doing the course...and hopefully in the 2nd year when i choose the 2D path that it will involve figure drawing or some form of work that will help me become a Concept artist...o yea i forgot to mention that...hehe thats what i want to be, a Concept artist. Ive been drawing concepts since i was 10 and create my own personal work everday in my sketchbook....which the tutor doesnt aprove off....so can somebody help me please....sorry for babbling On :[

fear not!

I went through the same period as you when I was in college doing A-level Art & Design. All those pointless research and filling sketch books do seems boring and lack of creativy. However after graduating from the course until now, my 2nd year at university, I do realise why we were told to do that.
For starters, art history is always important (yeah all the usual stuff) but the thing is are you really looking at how the masters created the piece? Focus on their techniqes on how they used colours, composition and their brush work rather than all those useless information such as their birthday and death year?
If no figure drawing study was included or there's not enough drawing session you could always try and copy few masters' work. For figure drawings there are always Michelangelo and Da Vinci :confident

Saddly for UK student there isnt really much specific course that could teach u design work. Such as concept design or creatures. The closest ones would be stuff like Product Design, Industral Design or Vehical Design but for those you got to wait till you go for uni.

As for now, really concentrate on how you would overcome a project, how you would develop a piece of work. If you really keen on learning how to draw, you could always spend extra time practice by urself

the thing is if you want to get into uni you are probably going to have to finish the course. although i think you can get in on the strength of a porfolio. as long as you keep drawing away from college its not going to hold you back. you could always look for some evening or weekend life drawing classes.

good luck
