I have an idea. how about an android.
but not a traditional mechanical looking one necessarily.
howabout, just as organics are built of organic cellular structure, there is a robotic cellular structure that makes up these synthetic organisms.
So they're robots down to a cellular level. meaning they could take on a form of a super evolved organic-esque structure.
(this is my idea, but it was quite difficult for me to come up with concepts myself. lets see how everyone else fares in this challenge?)

Draw 7 creatures (or thumbnails of creatures) that are symbols of the seven deadly sins (Pride, Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Wrath, Greed, and Sloth).

Another smaller idea would be to make a creature as a symbol of one of the sins, but as a twist require another creature to be in that picture which symbolized the opposing virtue. (Pride-Humility, Lust Chastity, Gluttony-Temperance, Sloth-Diligence, Envy-Kindness, Wrath-Patience, Greed- Charity)

Okay, I had an interesting idea, but it could be a complete flop so I'll want some feedback.

Shape Creatures- like the Sound Creatures in COW #113, they have no topic, but they must fit in the general shape given. To make them more diverse the shape could be allowed to be rotated 360 Degrees and mirrored and all, but it could not be lengthened or anything like that. Of course there could be little changes, but it would have to noticeably be similar to the shape given.

and it's a BIble verse from Revelations that describes a beast...an interpretation of this beast would be pretty cool...although it sounds like an awkward beast it might be cool...here we go:

As a child I loved drawing Woipertingers - maybe that was my first step into creature design :) Thought that would be a funny idea for the COW, too.

Woipertingers are some kind of mixed up forest animals such as rabbit, weasel, bambi, fish etc...

Hey all! Been a member for over a year now but this is my first post. I have yet to participate in a COW, some I wasnt interested in some I was but lack of time have always kept me at bay (I hand draw everything)....my goal is to participate in at least one before the end of 2008.

Anyways heres a few suggestions:
-Desert/sand swimmer
something that swims through sand as a shark or eel would through water.

-Made the dinosaurs extinct
kinda self explanitory, the reason for the extinction of the dinosaurs

-Deadly mate
something that kills its prey after mating (much like the black widow)

-Treetop canopy predator
There is a huge amount of life that spend their entire existence high up in the treetop canopy of the rainforest, what would hunt them and what special adaptations keep them from falling.

-Swamp/Bog parasite
this could be a gross one, think "leeches"

-Modern Dinos
this one was already suggested by infinitemonkey but its a good enough idea that it deserves repeating: If dinos never died out what would they look like today?

-Blind cavern dweller
predator or prey that spends its existence in a world that has never seen daylight, how does it see what special adaptations does it have.

-Hive mind
a single creature that is formed from millions of creatures that are connected by a single mind (picture bees forming a giant bee os something along those lines).

Again kinda self explanatory: a creature that has become one with its enviroment to the point that it has taken on the very characteristics of the world around it.

Clearly an idea based on the tongue-replacer isopod, this creature will take over the limb of a larger being and eventually replace it. Benevolence is not a must.

Something gentle and large that lives its life airborn. I picture a blimp-like elephant.

- Eye-shedder / Eye-shedder mimic
Creature that, for whatever reason, can lose its eyes. And/or a creature that mimics this, as a form of defence or as a way of catching prey (or both)

More inspired by swarms than the tongue-replacer, a parasite that comes in such large numbers as to eventually cover the host completely. Benevolence optional.

I haven't seen any weasel-based creatures, despite that these muscley carnivores tend to take down larger beasts with surprising accuracy, and frequently have distinctive hunting techniques (e.g. one small weasel is specialised in breaking the necks of its prey). So; a D&D worthy weasel.

- Camouflaging dungeon skitter
I was thinking something with adaptable skin or habits, specialised for living in a dungeon despite the dangers.

- Trap door cougar
Trap-making feline OR arachnid with similarities to cats.

- Big ears / Noddy
Just wondering what the COW artists could come up with to fulfil these names. One or the other, keep in mind that "ears" can refer to ear-like features rather than actual ears (e.g. long-eared owl)

Vampiric bird or reptile.

- Shrew-faced giant
Shrews are the world's smallest mammal, also the world's smallest mammal carnivore, and eat a LOT. Some large beastie with a head that resembles a shrew's.

Anything fitting the name.

- Tundra Manticore
Feline appearance, feline or humanoid face likely (it's meant to be a relative of the classic manticore). Dangerous tail (commonly scorpion these days, originally a tail ending in a ball of spikes; anything goes, make it modified for arctic travellers if you like). Wings optional.

- Ceiling abomination
Creature that lives on the ceilings of tunnels, dungeons, possibly old churches and more in tact ruins, space stations accepted. It lives on ceilings. It's dangerous. It's not pretty.

- Easter bunny
Okay, seasonal idea. Coming from the legend that hares could not only change their gender (and had close connections to magic, especially lunar-based) but also laid eggs. So something that lays eggs and has long ear-like features.

how about a series of topics, something to help my Third Earth sketchbook. Maybe reflect into the other weekly design challenges. :) Consider this:

1000 years into the future, far beyond technology and what we know as the vision of the future to a world as a endless landscape of buildings. The society is harmonious of art, science, and religion. In their technology, a fluid biomechanica hybrid of both cybornetic sentinence and a living, breathing organism.

However, after a apocolyptic asteroid event drives out 95% of the world's population to escape to the stars, leaving behind others to fend for themselves in the aftermath.

Time passes, almost 3000 years since the disaster.

The ones who left for the stars, The Journeymen (now, some hyper-advanced hybrid of fluid machine and bioorganism. More or less human a result of living in space and alien breeding with various advance humaniod alien cultures) return to Earth, after hundreds of years of searching for their vestigial home. Upon landing, they find the distant descendants of the survivors, a culture of technologically inclined primatives in a vast, lush jungle planet (Earth undergone a climate hyper-restoration from the greenhouse gases. The planet's landmasses are 80% covered in thick woodlands, wild jungles, or dark forests of immense trees of at least 100 feet. The animals have balloned in size, almost 100 fold their present sizes. Imagine a spotted salamander a 100 feet long!)

The primatives discover one Journeyman sent on a mission of discovery and peace. The Journeyman (for the story's purpose, I'll name Anuk.) is taken into the cultures of various clans around whats left of the world: North America's wastelands; the myst-shrouded ruins of Asia; etc...

He takes sketches in his digital log to take back interpretative accounts from the planet before he is to return to the stars.

So, yes, think a bit future anachronism: hover sailcraft, propelled by a thrust vector but steered by a animal hide sail (IDW idea?). Tribal clansmen herding immense reptiles and mammals to power huge convoys in the dense of the jungles (CDW / CHOW)...

I was thinking if it hasn't been done already, a Sexual Dimorphism round where we show the male and female creatures in a species that bear a marked amount of dimorphism. Sexual dimorphism is the term for systematic differences between males and females in a species.

Evolutionary lines are a basic concept for all animals - and I haven't seen a topic like this yet. Since I am studying to become an evolutionary biologist I thought this would be a good topic. Hey everyone.

To me concept art is always about new ideas and creativity. Something that's amazing to work on and also hard to create. For example, creating a new night creature, a new night legend. I mean something fabulous except Vampires and Werewolves. I'm talking about a new race that doesn't come out at night to drink blood or to change because of the moon. People also can describe their own new species, are they changing or what, what's the reason that they come out at night. It seems a great amusing concept, but it's hard. I think these kinds of ideas can take attentions and can be motivating.

How about an animal that isn't a threat to humans suddenly becoming the size of a horse? I'd hate to see what a monster-sized shrimp would be like.
Or maybe a creature that has the ability to blend in with furniture. What if there was some kind of alien that could look like a lamp? Scary.

Earringer - In a world that has transformed and evolved to suit the lazy and overweight, a new species has been captured and trained to souly retrieve and attach earrings. Being the first series of trained creatures, it is often quite clumbsy and therefore its life span is fairly short due to squashing from pain-reflexes.

Toenail Cutter - If you don't like people touching your feet you certainly couldn't possibly imagine liking the feeling of having something with 6 legs latching onto your foot and shaving down those over grown yellow toenails of yours. Toenails are quite the delicacy to this creature. Being very territorial, make sure you only keep one around the house, because if they spot another, your feet my be left wounded and scarred.
