oh wow, are they called fiddler crabs because of the one huge claw? So it looks like they are holding a fiddle? I'll bet that's it! Good golly, the universe makes sense now...

Wow, lot's of great ideas. Here's mine.
Heaven's Firmament
A mighty creature whose sole purpose is to carry Heaven itself upon it's back. Should be an interesting challenge both in terms of scale and by removing the option of the hideous creature which I see more and more people are relying on.
Also it means you have to concieve of a Heaven in addition to the creature at least in some compacity

Cyclopean
February 15th, 2006, 08:07 PM
Hi, I'm not really an artist, but I am into writing and biology, so I guess that counts for something. Here are my ideas; they may be similar to those before me, but oh well:

Eusocial / Hiveborn - a family organism organized according to reproductive capacity, such as ants, termites, bees and naked mole rats. But what about birds? Or rabbits? Or apes? Or even plants and fungi? What kind of defenses would they have? What is mating like for them? What do they subsist upon? What are their homes like?

Beast God - Humanity can't be the only species with faith. Don't rats have their kings? Don't gazelle pray to some windy force after successfully dodging a lion? Maybe flies do have some god, a "trash can thor", you could say... BOW DOWN BEFORE FLIPPERUS! EEE-EEE-EEE! Well, try to paint what their god looks like, as it is praised by its followers.

Extreme Specialist - There's a species of ant on some far-off island that feeds exclusively upon the eggs of one species of spider. There is a species of finch on Wolf Island (in the Galapagos) that feeds on the blood of blue-footed boobies. Come now, of course you can think of your own far-too-specialized specializer! How far have they gone towards getting a meal, evolution-wise?

Lean, Mean, Fartin' Machine - What smells, is soft and just stained my jeans? Why, a chunk of broccoli from my dinner plate! Why, what did you think I was going to say? In any case, a Fart Machine farts for a reason. Mating call, perhaps? Self-defense? Or maybe it's a form of locomotion? You make the call. I'll be too busy gagging in the corner.

Imperial Runts - Any creature - given the instincts and intellect required, of course - could create a society, then a city-state, and eventually an empire. Whether they act with the brutality of the Romans, the pomp of the English, or the innocent devilry of the Americans, these runty little critters have their own way that is totally unique in the end. Maybe they use the bones of their ancestors to build things, or perhaps they fuse themselves together to create living tanks and towers. Their goals may not be their own; perhaps it's all encoded as instincts (read Clan of the Cave Bear to see the neanderthal's instinct capacity), or their minds have been altered by some other... presence. Whatever, they are fierce, arrogant and above all, RUNTY.

That's it for now. Excuse the joking before, I'm fond of smiles.

EDIT: qitsune, as well as several others have mentioned wheeled animals.

Spinning Flesh - Somewhere out there, a beast with rotating parts exists. Not some cybernetic monster, not some silicon-based thing, and for all intents and purposes not metallic, electronic or even synthetic. Maybe this beast has wheels upon which it travels, organic discs composed of flesh, blood and bone (or chitin); furry, somewhat irregular discs with denticle treads, for example. Or perhaps its some aquatic leviathan with a bone propeller instead of a tail fluke, perhaps several propellers in succession to allow it great speed. Or maybe it flies? Up to you, that's for sure.

a fully functional grasseater . no deadly predator. and it should be able to blend in with the rest of the animals of earth. but no hybrid or spinoff from an existing creature. no cowhorse or something. it should look normal and with no dangerous or colorful visual aspects. that means that the humans should leave it alone if they encounter it. but not a cuddly pet animal, perhaps its even beeing used by humans for food of some sort. they drink its milk or eats its meat or something.
seen so many cool predators ,but thought that be a true challenge to design a boring grasseater .

i know this isnt a creature idea but what about if you set up different levels of competition, like a beginnners entry, intermediate and avanced, i know it would take a lot to organise but i think it might give more inspiration and enthusiasm to those such as myself that are in no way near the league of those that are posted, but i think if i had the chance to post something i would work harder and improve better maybe. Hmmm, well, I consider DSG to be a good place for beginners to start. These "of the week" projects, while exciting, are too time consuming for me, being a full-time student, mom and worker.

A newbie with nothing else to do could do the DSG and input more time with relatively good output in comparison to others in the DSG, plus gain some better practice by doing daily work rather than a long piece. The reasoning behind this is they have to practice each of the steps more frequently, whereas with a high finish piece you put much time and effort into the finishing stage. Sketching needs to be practiced more frequently in the early stages of artistic development, because drawing is the base of the pyramid of artistic skill. The art worlds in France and Italy both knew this for centuries.

Thought I'd throw in some thoughts.

Topic 1: beauty and the beast proposing

One must be on his knee's proposing to his true love. The idea is that one of the creatures is quite ugly looking while the other is beautiful. Think of “Beauty and the Beast” and you should get an idea. It is possibly that you can make one of them human if that fancies you more.

Topic 2: Monster trying to follow dress code policy.

The code states: All monsters must wear a business suite with a tie. We want all our workers to look like true professionals. Nails, teeth, spikes, or anything sharp for that matter must be well manicured or cut. We are not here to "SCARE" any customer's away or other employee’s! Shoes with long stockings are a must! No, your not going to walk bare-footed or slime your way around with your tentacles. And remember to always wear a big smile.

Just remember to follow the policy. The creature may not be good at following that policy but is trying to give it some effort. You do not actually need to show him working, just him attempting to wear cloths for the policy.

Final evolution of a species (could be that of a current animal)
Cyclops' pet of choice
Permanently homeless

Faster than light - the catch is that it would theoretically be going back in time if it moved that fast. However, to maintain relationships with other creatures they need to stay in the same time zone. This means it limits its mobility to speeds below that of light, and feels like it's constantly in a state of hyperactivity.

Modernist creature - Form follows function. Simple design strictly to serve a purpose. Technically, all animals would fit this description, but you could have a bit of fun with this and exaggerate the trends of Modernist design.

Could it be based on a true story?

About 3 years ago I was on a cruise around Europe, and one evening the ship started rocking violently. You've got to understand that when a ship of that size starts rocking something is definately up. I was up on the pool deck at the time, holding onto a pole for balance. While trying to avoid sliding chairs amongst other items, the screaming nearby became especially loud. I now regret peering over as I'm permanently scarred by recurring nightmares of the beast I saw. As soon as I got home I devoted a painting to the creature, trying to remember all the crucial details of my sighting. I spent multiple days on this painting. Few people have actually seen it, but I've decided to share it with you all. This is what I saw. (http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f107/cognitionsb/seamonster.jpg)

Surah Al-a'raf: 12, Al Hijr: 26-27 and Ar-Rahman: 14-19, expressly states that man was created out of clay and jinn out of fire.

There are a bunch more passages in the Qur'an but I'm not paid to type out religious texts.

Future Humans, maybe? I remember the "no humanoid" rule was bypassed for the Siren, and I'd like to see what everyone here would do in their interpretation of humanity's future. Would we go back to being apes, or would we be like woolly mammoths and sabre-toothed cats, only on two legs and with hands?

Take any kind of car, and turn it into an animal.

Combine a household object with an animal (FISHCHAIR!!)

Erlking (Elfking)
text written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Narrator: Who rides so late through night and wind?
It is a father with his child;
he has the boy close in his arm,
he holds him tight, he keeps him warm.

Father: "My son, why do you hide your face in fear?"

Son: "Father, do you not see the Erlking?
The Erlking with his crown and train?"

Father: "My son, it is a streak of mist."

Erlking: "You dear child, come with me!
I'll play very lovely games with you.
There are lots of colorful flowers by the shore;
My mother has some golden robes."

Son: "My father, my father, don't you hear
the Erlking whispering promises to me?"

Father: "Be still, stay calm, my child;
It's the wind rustling the dry leaves."

Erlking: "My fine lad, do you want to come with me?
My daughters will take care of you;
my daughters lead the nightly dance,
and they'll rock and dance and sing you to sleep."

Son: "My father, my father,
don't you see
the Erlking's daughters over there in the shadows?"

Father: "My son, my son, I see it clearly,
it's the gray sheen of the old willows."

Erlking: "I love you, your beautiful form delights me!
And if you're not willing, then i'll use force."

Son: "My father, my father, now he's grasping me!
The Erlking has hurt me!"

Narrator: "The father shudders, he rides swiftly,
he holds the moaning child in his arms;
with effort and urgency he reaches the courtyard:
in his arms the child was dead."

for some reason this german song evokes a strong image in my head think it would make a great topic

Why don't we just do an intelligent species of alien or something, but you know since we can't have our creatures being too human like, I think it will be a pretty good challenge. Unless I'm dumb as hell.

I wasn't aware that our creature designs couldn't represent an intelligent species. The only 'rule' that restricts that at all seems to be meant to reign in 'character design'.
Personally I assumed it was the participants personal preferences that kept COW designs on the 'beastly' side of the track.

Well the thing with an intelligent species is that it would have to have some sort of manipulative organ that could build, make tools, etc.

Evolved Shark- All land animals of any size have been wiped out, and now nature's most perfect predator emerges from the sea to take their place...
And even more extreme:
Evolved Starfish/Sea Urchin/Anemone- All large lifeforms on the entire earth have been wiped out. Now some of the most unlikely, insignificant animals on the planet can flourish. Great possibilities for unusual adaptations and radiosymmetrical creatures...though I can imagine an overabundance of tentacles in the results.
Modern Dinosaur- What if they hadn't gone extinct?
Mimic creature- It mimics something in its natural environment, like the stick insect.
The Perfect Lifeform- The apex of evolution.
Zero Gravity Creature- Fairly self-explanatory. I'm just making these things up off the top of my head.
Bred creature- No, not "bread" creature, bred creature. Something domesticated then bred until it hardly resembles its wild ancestors, like pugs and sharpeis compared to wolves.

Well, the astronomers of the world just kicked Pluto out of the solar system. Its no longer a planet. Lovecraft fans everywhere will balk at this, because they know of course WHAT lives on Pluto.

I think we should have a COW in honor of this. Maybe what we all think a Migo would look like, or something just in a Lovecraftian style. Or maybe just creatures from Pluto without the direct Lovecraft reference. Aliens that get mad we voted them out of the solar system and come to earth for a little smackdown on the pious earthlings.

I dont know if someone may have already suggested this one, but how about; Living Vehicles.
Not just creatures that people (or aliens.) ride as mounts, but actual biomechanical creatures bread and genetically altered as vehicles.

Examples could be; a military tank creature, (even with a gun turret built in) or creatures just bread for transportation or speed. They could be land based, hover or even fly, the possibilities are nearly endless.

Someone suggested I post this here (from the Lounge), so here it goes:

Alright, let's all pretend that somehow, a species of the Homo genus (or humanoid mammals that would later evolve into someone as smart as the common man) were to evolve and adapt through water, what do you all think they'd look like?

From what I understand, the common whales (or just cetaceans overall) evolved from four legged or quadrupedal land mammals, and they were otter-like. If you think about it, it's a long jump from something like that to an actual whale, growing fins, losing their ability to walk on land, etc. So, my question to all you artists who have a good sense of anatomy and the body is, if there were to be some sort of ancestor humans or apes who evolved by adapting their bodies for the open ocean, what do you think they'd look like? Would they look like the creature from the black lagoon? would they look like mermaids? would they look like Cthulhu?

Okay, they probably won't look like Cthulhu or the creature from the black lagoon since I'm talking about mammals here, but it's a good example. Looking at whales now, they don't seem very mammal-like, but at the same time, if you look at them more closely, they don't look that fish-like as well (since they're not.) What amazing (or not) physical changes would you think an aquatic humanoid-mammal have if they were to be living right now and had the chance to evolve alongside the Homo genus/cavemen? (that would later on evolve to Homo Sapiens or us people.)

PS, If I used the wrong terminology, pardon me.

At first I have to say, I love C.O.W.! I am a big fan of the fantastic concept art here for quite a while now. I never saw better concept art. You people are great! Unfortunately I am not so skilled with my tablet, so I won't contribute drawings anytime soon, I think, but I can try to contribute some new topics, although I had very much topics in mind, that already where mentioned before, like any kind of biomechanic creature, sky- cloud- and even spacedwelling creatures, and of course some other ideas like the anatomy of an alien critter or an evolutionary fact sheet. I even liked the suggestions about the creature, that pees the best drink in the world, the creature, that is used as a drawing tool, universes' oldest, youngest, first or last species and so on. But I think, I can still contribute something, so I'll try.

While I still like the idea of diagramm of the internal organs of an alien creature or the evolutionary sheet, there still lacked the kind of diagram, that shows the lifecycle of a creature. So this is my first idea:

"The life cycle of an alien critter."

Sort of a scientific illustration that shows several stages of the lifecycle of an alien lifeform. For example http://images.encarta.msn.com/xrefmedia/zencmed/targets/illus/ilt/000ed370.gif

This kind of diagram could also include another idea I read before, the occasionally mating of the species.

And now for another ideas:

"The latest cryptozoological/exozoological addition of the zoo."

Could be an earthbased zoo or an alien zoo and could display a very dangerous creature in a secured environment for our viewing pleasure.

"A creature that lives inside a celestial nebular."

So your average spacecraft really needs fog lights (unless the critters are bioluminiscent) to dodge this creatures, otherwise they end up like insects on a windshield. But I guess a spaceship in that kind of environment would be more likely like a submarine because I think, that life inside a celestial cloud would resemble oceanic life, but who knows?

I remember the topic of an seamonster, that attacks an old sailing ship as well, perhaps this could be a SciFi Topic as well. Some form of space dwelling life could attack a modern spaceship. But I tink this is to much a szenario, would work better for the DSG, than for C.O.W., I guess. Anyways, I just wanted to mention it. :)

"The true masters of the foodchain."

I am thinking of creatures, that have evolved to live beneath humans and still staying unnoticed feeding off human wastes, human remains or humans themselfes. I have critters in mind, that resemble common household items or furniture but are very nasty predators in reality. (But this theme probably is to specific and off topic for a creature-thread, because it originates more of the idea, how monsters, that are disguised as furniture or householditems could be explained, so I perhaps should suggest this at the DSG as well.)

"Something odd your plumber find plugging your pipes."

Here I thought some bizarre creature like a strange kind of freshwaterjellyfish or squid could blocking the drains or so, swimming or crawling along, before it stuck at a very tight part of the pipes. I think, anything would be nice and could make a new potential aquatic pet as long it is not an ordinary sewer rat stucking in the pipes.

"A laser predator hunts an ordinary lightbased prey."

This was inspired by the fact, that the dot of a laser pointer is brighter than the cone of light of an ordinary torch. Nothing special, but at some point I thought, if creatures are composed of light, like it was mentioned several times before, there could a predator out there, that hunts the light creatures. It must be stronger than an lightcreature. So perhaps electromagnetic forces compress it to some kind of laser being, that could hunt the lightbased organisms. It is very abstract, but perhaps a useful idea.

"A virtual creature, that evolved on its own out of synthetic organic molecules in a simulated 3D Environment."

This idea speaks for itself, I think. a creature, that lives it entire life in cyberspace, but still is a lifeform, that can interact with other lifeforms and it's environment and that is not created by humans directly. I think, that still could be some form of life, that would be worth a round in C.O.W., so I suggested it here. :)

"Draw a monster, you were afraid of as a child."

In my case it would be something, I used to call "Grüne Haut" (= green skin). The fear of the green skin was established by some german tv commercial I saw back then. I can't remember, what it was for, but I think, it was the commercial of an insurance company. There was a helicopter flying over some meadows and suddenly, the meadows opened up like a big jaw and sucked the helicopter in, afterwards it closed itself completely and resembled normal meadows again. After that commercial I was sure, that any meadow out there could be a skin flat green monster, that eats up anything, that comes near its camouflaged jaw. So I called it "green skin" and was afraid of stepping on meadows for a while. So much for the monster, I would contribute, if I could draw better and this topic would be selected.

Children tend to see monsters almost everywhere. Moving lights and shadows at the wall at night, that are interpreted as ghosts, silhouettes of toys in the dark, that resemble monsters, moving twigs behind the window in front of a light source, that resemble some scary creature, that wants to come in, I still remember that. Or when I first encountered fireflys. I never heard of them before and one evening they were dancing around some bushes. I was very frightened and thought, that this would be my first ghost encounter until someone caught some for me and showed me, that they just were some fascinating insects. The mind of a child can spawn many variations of horrifying spectres. I am pretty sure anybody has some. I think, there are many other interesting childhood monsters out there and I realy would love to see them. :)

"Draw something, you won't expect living under your feet on an alien planet."

Some creature, that lives in the ground or even in an icy shell of a small lake, sea or even an ocean.

"The asteroid belt located in the habitable zone of a nearby star is in reality composed of the eggs of a spacedwelling lifeform."

Pretty much as the title says, an asteroid belt, that in reality is just the clutch of some cool space critters.

"Revolution from Outer Space."

This topic revolves around the discovery of a lifeform, that changes humanity. It's social displays could be the archetype for a new and better kind of social community and standarts or it's anatomy grants a great scientific breakthrough in some ways or something like that.

"Modified."

This topic has a very little background story. Humanity spread across the stars and colonises new worlds. But some worlds are more odd than others. Humanity is prepared, that the inhabitants of some colony worlds will slightly change over time to adapt their new environment. But there are several wild animals, pets and cattle, that would rather perish than adapt due to the harsh conditions at the new world. So bio-engineers altered the offspring of the animals, so that they are perfectly adapted to their new surroundings. Now it is up to the artists, how this modiefied animals could look like. Perhaps they have a blue or violett fur to reflect the ultraviolett radiation of the star, or they are bioluminiscent, because the days are not very bright and the nights are completely pitch black, or some mammals became a stonger exoskeleton because they are on a high gravity world or whatever the artists can imagine. How would a modified wild animal, pet or cattle look in the strange new worlds of the human race?

"It fed of radiowaves."

Could be space dwelling lifeforms or alien lifeforms, or still unknown earthly lifeforms. The first thing, that comes to my head is some organic kind of satelite dish, that is it's sensory ans consuming organs at the same time. But perhaps the most of you have better ideas. I think, just to give some exotic abilities like this as a topic could result in very interesting lifeforms. :)

"Nightactive, glowing swampcreature."

Because I love glowing critters. :)

I think, that could be a vampiristic whisp or a polencollecting whisp, that collect it's polen from nightactive plants or something like a honeybee.

"Symbioshell."

Symbiotic creature, that takes the DNA from it's host to transform to some kind of very protective exoskeleton for it's host to become almost invulnerable and descends it's organs into the body of it's host to fed of it's hosts lunch, it soon completely merges with it's host. (I just remember, that I have already seen that in some of the old C.O.W.s. Damn. You guys are so inspiring, that even my suggestions resemble something, that I have already seen here.)

"The day, the moon fed."

Outherworldy moon turns out to be some gigantic, spacedwelling lifeform, which feeds of asteroids or planetary ring or curious astronauts, as seen from the planet's surface, the moon is surrounding. At least, it would be impossible for the naked eye, to see a munched astronaut, so perhaps it is some big spaceship instead of the astronaut.

Would something like that work or would that be too much of an scenario?

"It dances with the snowflakes."

I am thinking here of a clouddwelling creature, that resembles a snowflake and when it is a full grown adult it starts it's matingdance with the first snow in the winter, falling between the snowflakes with the desired partner from the heavens and procreates. It's eggs will find their way with the steam of the melting snow back into the clouds later on.

I am not very sure, how exactly it has to resemble a snowflake. It could be a being composed of light, that looks like having a radial body with six arms, or something like a starfish like, whiteskinned being with six arms and a little fuzz, so that it resembles a snowflake, or it could have a parachutelike bell like a jellyfish, that has only a snowflakelike muster on top of the bell similar to the markings of a compass-jellyfish or it is some kind of very small beetle with a silvery whitish, light reflecting carapace, that reflects the light that much, that it looks like a shimmering snowflake for the naked human eye. However, I think, there would be very well ideas for the design out there. And that kind of topic would get well along with the oncoming winter. :)

"A festival creature."

Some creature, that resembles something, that would remind you of any festival season, holidays or anything else. Could be a bird (or even an alien creature, that looks like a terrestrial bunny, but still lays eggs), that lies eggs that look like they were painted as eastereggs or a christmastreelike being, a tinsel-snake or a dreidel-like creature, anything goes, as long, as it reminds the viewer of any festival season or holidays.

Now, I come up with some very random topics (and some very random creaturenames) without (mostly) any background at all:

"The creatures of the webbed canyon."
"Gaya's Lanterns."
"Creek Sparklets vs. Swamp Lights."
"The Xenozyte."
"The Tideland-Hustler."
"The Siltgullet."
"The Scarvandi."
"The living planet."
"The living planetary ring."
"The living tower of the highland planes of the jungle."
"The inhabitants of the icy deserts of Then'Kar III."
"The replicator." ((Okay, little bit of a background idea) It can resemble certain body parts and sneaks into hospitals to be implanted into patients to fulfil his parasitic purpose.)
"Invading Spores."
"It feed on acid rain."
"It hides between the wavelenghts of the light."
"It lurks in our subconsciousnes and feeds upon unaccomplished wishes"
"It shoots back." (Not an easy prey for hunters)
"Something, that is frightened to death, when you look at it."
"It hybernates below earth's crust for aeons now. (and might cause some tremors, when fully woken up)"
"Aerial plankton." (Any kind of floating and/or drifting creature in the air)
"It watches the sky and the top side of the water surface from deep below in the ocean."
"Colony of creatures that resemble a living fishing net."
"It hides in books."
"It hides in clocks."
"It is whispering and/or soothing and/or singing to little children."
"The angler-fang." (Creature, that is dangling from above and lures his victims with a bioluminiscent tentacle (And this is the second time I remember after writing down the idea, that I saw something like this already in some earlier C.O.W.))
"The rear-watcher."
"The razorspine."
"The swampfloater."
"The shimmering jellybell."
"The shadow-leaker."
"The colourfull poisonleech."
"The poisenous bladderfish."
"The spikey jellyfish."
"The armored jellyfish."
"The skinless squid."
"The cockaigne visitor." (Creature, that can instantly be eaten without cooking or preparations, even while it is stil alive (But that would be very cruel))
"The dreamcatcher of the northern forests."
"The dreamfiltering capling." (Creature, that permanently dreams, while it's body works entirely autonomous. It is rather telephatic and can help people to forget about nightmares and dreaming sweet dreams with the help of the telephatical dreamland-feed of this creature, when worn as cap.)
"It will be used in our computers in the next centuries." (Creature, that will partly or entirely be used in futuristic computers later on because of some usefull abilities of them for the computer science.)
"The balloonlianas of Theneprex VII."
"It maybe look beautiful but is a very nasty parasite." (such like a vampiristic butterfly or something.)
"It produces it's own food." (perhaps it's droppings are altered by symbionts, so it can digest them again, or it chews off extra-feeding-limbs or something like that. (And for the third time I think, I have seen this before. I even remember, that this entire topic happened before. I realy should rewatch the old C.O.W.s later on.))
"The last thing you hear, before it eats you is *poof*."
"Forrestdrapes." (Some lianalike creatures, that dangling in the forest like drapes)
"It only emerges during new moon from the depths of the ocean to display its amazing bioluminiscent bodies to their airdwelling mates for courtship." (Could be giant deep sea jellies and their gasbaglike mates, that float through the Sky, or some manta ray like fishes, whose mates mastered flying through air. Or any other organism, that you like. (In each case one gender of them both lives in the deep sea and only ascends during new moon for displaying their lights, courtship and the mating afterwards, the other gender spends it's entire life in the air and watching the oceans that time of the month, where no moonlight is reflected from the water, so they would recognize their mates in the sea. (Btw.: It doesn't mater, which of them should be male and which female, that is up to you, if you want to show them actually mating.)))
"The great Protectors" (Some creatures mankind leaves at Earth to guard and protect the planet from ecologicaly desasters to alien invasion or colonisation until mankind returns. (So they are some kind of very intelligent and manipulating biomechanic "guarddogs"))"
"The Well Orphans"
"The protagonyc snarklets"
"The most important lifeform in earth's ecosystem, that is still complete unknown to mankind."
"Semisymbiotic Spongefungus growing on a marine animal."
"Wandering Mudsponge."
"Amphibic, Insectoidic Hybridfishlet."
"Pulsating Seabubble."
"Mistbell"
"Catchfilament"
"Siltsnare Stumbler"
"Watervortex Inhabitator"
"Illuminaterox"
"Living Marinewall"
"Glowing Marinecell"
"Seasnorkel"
"Swinging Surgebuoy"
"Tideland-root-eater"
"Dunedozer" or "Dunesnoozer"
"Dewdancer"
"Iridescencing foam Maker"
"Glowpearlalgaestringworm"
"Glowpearlalgae-eater"
"Scurrying Spheroplasm"
"Oceanic Pelt"

Also there would be some esoteric "phenomena" to exploid. "Rods" for example have been proven to be motionblurs of fast flying insects, but still are believed in being an invisible lifeform, that "swims" through the air with a thin finlike membrane, to fast for human eyes to catch up. So perhaps such a "Rod" would be an interesting theme as well as this "spook lights", that are described as glowing spheres, that float close over the ground.

I also had another not completly new idea, but perhaps that would work for another C.O.W. Aniversary. I thought, that for at least one C.O.W. it would be possible, not to give the specifications of a lifeform but the specifications of a habitat. For example an alien planet. So the members could create long before that special C.O.W. an entirely new planet and discuss, how it should look like and what kind of lifeforms or habitats it should support, after that, they could together create some common Predators and Prey, that every artist can use later, to show his own creature being hunt, or even hunting and introduce their very own species at that special C.O.W. itself. Due to the preparations the artists would have a common base. They would have a common world, where their creatures would life and they would even have the same food resources or dangers via predators. So all of their own creations would at the end of this specific C.O.W. belong to the same ecosystem and would grant some kind of interconnection between their creations. At the end, ther can still be a voting for the best concept art that far. I think that would be fun, but it would require much work to prepare that event as well.

So. At this point I want to apologize for this hell of a post and I hope, you are not to angry with me due to it's length. I also want to apologize for my bad english, I am not a native speaker. :)

I still hope, that someone read this and find one or another idea quite useful.

Hehe. I am sorry to have scared you. That was not intended. :)

Most of the ideas I had on my mind since I first visited C.O.W.. Then, I even got more ideas, but most of them weren't good enough to be mentioned and other ones were already mentioned here. So I tried to suggest everything I had left. I just didn't expect, that so much would be left. But most suggestions, like "Wandering Mudsponge." were almost totaly random creature names I invented some time ago for possible species, that could inhabitate alien worlds. So I think, the more interesting suggestions of mine are the ones, that include a few background thoughts. The rest seems simply to follow the suggestion someone made earlier, just to combine a few words or even invent some.

And after I stumbled about the "Beast of Burden" again, I got (like many people before me, I guess) the idea of exchanging simply the words of a creatures description. So "The Beast of Burden" could become "The Beast of Boredom". The creature could be bored, or it could be boring for its viewers (although I do not think, that the creatures in C.O.W. could be boring after all).

Or playing around with letters, like the "D". "Dirty Dustdiggers doing their daily deeds" Okay, doesn't work with "their", but at least it sounds like a "D". :)

And some idea, I recently remembered:

"The Mistshifter, the favorite pet of any recently deceased."

Because most people like pets. So why should they don't like some in the afterlife? I just remember "Jack" from "The nightmare before christmas" having a pet ghost dog with a glowing nose. So, what about the pets of ghosts, ghouls or zombies? They could aetherial, or flesh and blood, that doesn't realy matter.

And last, but not least, something completly random:

"From the aetherial planes of Th'ush, where spheres of energy are raining down from the sky, it draws powers through it's rootlike tentacles."

Too much of a scenario? If so, we could forget about the spheres of energy part. :)

And now I will remain calmly for a while, so I do not frighten anyone else. :)

"Earth Fauna at the year 120.000 AD."

After seeing this image (http://www.dieneueepoche.com/pics/2006/11/05/l/2006-11-05-l--20061105071321_JAPAN_DOLPHIN_LEGS_TOK102.jpg) and reading that article (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/1501AP_Japan_Dolphin_Legs.html) I thought of how it would be, when dolphins would come back to land again. I thought of it not as a simple mutation and a remain of the past but as a form of evolution. How dolphins would look like, when they return to land? Than it struck me. I remembered the series the future is wild (http://animal.discovery.com/convergence/futureiswild/futureiswild.html), where creatures were shown, that could exist in a distant future, when mankind vanished long ago. I remembered, that this was an interesting concept, although some creatures seemed rather ridiculous. But I thought that also could be a nice idea for a C.O.W..Portraiing the descendents of terrestrial animals, that perhaps could be living in a new habitat. Like dolphins or whales walking on the land again, octopusses burrowing under the muddy coastlines, catching prey with their tentacles from below and dragging the prey underground, or gasfilled, floating jellyfish, or penguins that now live permanently underwater, some kind of landcrawling manta rays or perhaps some totaly new kinds of animals, that could have been evolved from former wellknown animals. I am still thinking about wild packs of former pets like dogs, now perhaps more dominant canine races than the wolfs for example or herds of other domesticated animals, that found their way into wildlife again.

I think, there is much place for ideas. What do you think? :)

there was a Simpsons episode where the dolphins (the clowns of the sea) come back up on land to take over. It was pretty scarry.

Yes, I remember that. It really was scary. But it was a treehouse of horror episode anyway, so it was just fine, the way it was. >:D

We need to keep things unique :) How about....

PSP Pet
Creature the ultimate pet for a Sony Handheld at double res the screen size (so 960x544 is the size of each submission) These submissions are intended to be backgrounds to download at the end of the competition, to put on our PSPs. Does not need to be a mascot for Sony, just badass with these restrictions :)

ps: might want to allow people to not have the cow name and number clutter up the submission pictures?

Oh hey there, first time posting and stuff. I usually just lurk, and wait until I can submit something worthwhile. But here's an idea I thought would be interesting, came to me after watching Avatar:

Face-Stealer.

I'm in the same boat as kindless, first post, long way off from submitting, I just had a couple neat ideas I thought could be some good fuel for thought. They kind of tie in with all the holidays and the new year...

Holy Beast (Holy C.O.W!)

Temple guardian

Time Keeper, Time watcher.

hey newbie here with some thoughts:

Dramatic Transformation: Coinciding with the new year, the idea is to have something that changes. Design is focused on the transformation of a creature. Either from infant to adulthood, possibly through metamorphosis, such as a butterfly. Or take a known creature and imagine million of years later, it evolves to take a totally different life style, like a pig that evolve to swim full time.

Unique Killing Methods: instead of killing using the conventional claws, teeth, etc. the creature uses other body parts to kill....strangled by a neck...

Projectile: well, creature that shoots out stuff. not by a gun or by throwing rocks, but a projectile weapon created within the creatures body.

Big Green Things With Teeth: Viridans Mordicus Grandis has been around as long or longer then man and is one of the most appropriately named species in existance. In the distant past they were bigger, greener, and had more teeth but even though they have fallen back on the evolutionary ladder its ear-splitting scream is more then enough to send even the bravest of men running.

Life stages of semi organic predator.

Predator creature that is formed of both flesh and anorganic matter ( flesh and translucent crystals, flesh and lava, flesh and rocks etc) .

No high tech stuff for the non organic part.

Basic illustration for at least two different life stages : baby form, young form, adult form, decrepit/old form.

haha animal transportation...reminds me of the catbus in My Neighbor Tortorro:)
how about animals just absed solely on a fictional name? like, for example...
the nubblebeaked marmelsap, or ferocious jibblymuck?
interessting to see what people do just based on a wierd name alone...

One Ton Baddass - if all the creatures in this weeks cow had to battle, it would win. I suggest the weight limit because they should all fit in the arena together.

Hmm call it the One Ton Monster Champion if that makes more sense.

Really we need more teeth and claws and tentacles! Oh and slime, lets not forget slime!

Gibbering Nightmarish Horror's everwhere! Hehehe even in the God of Art chow it looks like a lot of evil deities...If I drew my muse as an evil bitch I would never hear the end of it.
